Domestic Travel
Domestic travel was a new concept, and a great success in Summer 2007 as Honors students
participated in a literary tour of New England. The course (ENG 399 during May Session) was led by
Professor Walker Rutledge and consisted of 11 students and a teacher assistant. Highlights of the
trip included visiting the homes of several 19th century authors such as: Ralph Waldo Emerson,
Nathaniel Hawthorne, the Alcott family, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Herman Melville, Mark Twain,
Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Emily Dickinson. The group also had the opportunity to go whale
watching along the Stellwagen Bank, as well as take part in a Freedom Trail tour in Boston, MA.
The Literary Tour of New England was partially sponsored by:

*Data collected from ASA Report: CPE Enrollment Summary
2005 Data was collected 8/28/06, 2006 data collected 8/4/06, and 2007 data collected 8/6/07.
WKU saw an increase in total headcount, however the largest contributing group
(undergraduate seniors) has experienced a trend of decline. The sophomore population
grew by 85 students, and contributed to almost 15% of the total undergraduate student
count. The largest contributing group of graduate students (Master’s Degree) is also on a
declining trend. In 2006, the Master’s degree students contributed to over 72% of the total
Graduate headcount, but in 2007 that percent fell to just over 64%.
In 2006, 305 undergraduate seniors participated in the May commencement ceremony and
completed their degree requirements throughout the summer. In 2007, there were also 305
undergraduate seniors that completed their degree in summer. At the graduate level, 108
participated in the May commencement while finishing in the summer of 2006. In 2007, the
graduate number decreased to 103 students who received degrees in August after
participating the May commencement.

Winter Term Effect
There was some concern that Winter Term would pull students from Summer Sessions,
causing an overall impact on alternate session enrollment. Based on two years of data, this
has not been shown to be the case.
