The purpose of Program Planning and Assessment at Hartnell College is to obtain an honest and
authentic view of a program and to assess its strengths, opportunities, needs, and connection to the
mission and goals of the college. The process is based on the premise that each academic program
reviews assessment data and uses these data to plan for improvement. The results of these annual
cycles provide data for a periodic (every five years) comprehensive review that shows evidence of
improvement and outlines long-range goals.
The Program Planning and Assessment process will improve and increase the flow of information
about student learning, student success and student behavior at Hartnell College. The result of the
process will also improve institutional effectiveness.

A new mission and vision is currently before the board for approval in February. In considering
your program’s future goals, please review the proposed new mission and vision statements.

II. ANNUAL REVIEW
This section must be completed for ALL academic programs, including those
scheduled for a comprehensive review in spring 2014.

1. Please evaluate the 3-year trend of enrollment and success of courses in your
program/discipline. Identify the courses you are choosing to examine this

Enrollment trends over the three-year period reflect a high enrollment rate for sociology
courses. Courses are offered in face-to-face, hybrid and distance education formats. These
courses tend to fill quickly; of eight sections offered in Fall 2013, five were waitlisted. In Spring
2014, four of seven sections were waitlisted.
SUCCESS
3. Review the success data. Describe and analyze any patterns or anomalies that
you notice. What do you make of these patterns or anomalies? What actions
should be taken to ensure continuous improvement?
A somewhat troubling trend is noted with success rates for SOC-1, Introduction to Sociology.
Over the three-year period, success rates for this course have steadily fallen from 62% to 57%
and success rates are consistently below the college average. It is anticipated that the review of
student learning outcomes for this course in Fall 2013 and Spring 2014 might provide insight
into this trend and offer potential solutions. This analysis will be facilitated by the hire of a
full-time faculty member to coordinate the analysis of outcomes for sociology courses.

Are there any plans to make changes to certificate/degree programs or improvements in
teaching and student learning?
Data was gathered in each course that was taught in Fall 2015 through exams and final term
papers that were assigned during the Semester. All members of the part time Sociology faculty
gathered together many times during the Semester to review, evaluate and analyze the data and
findings that was collected. As a group, it was decided that implementing different effective
assessment measuring tools and methodology for collecting data and assessing for the Spring
term 2014 would be assessed and taught through lectures, participating firsthand in activities
throughout the community, projects and group discussions, students will then have the tools to
successfully complete the course to apply Sociology and its theories and methodology to every
day experiences.

5. Describe course level assessments results and how they will influence your

What we found for all our Sociology courses (1,5, 41, 42) is that when students were asked to
examine theory they would apply theoretical concepts focusing only on the definition of the
textbook and not integrating theory in their own words.
6. Describe assessment activities that need to be strengthened or improved. What
are the challenges to achieving these improvements?
Through a variety of activities (projects, discussions, presentations, research papers, quizzes,
and exams) students will be able to think critically, evaluate, and assess information and events
utilizing the theoretical perspectives. Therefore, students will be able to look beyond the
textbook definition and apply different theoretical perspectives for themselves.

Recruitment for the full-time faculty member in sociology is in progress. Part-time faculty
have met together to discuss course level outcomes assessment data gathered from Fall 2013,
and are planning to assess course and program level outcomes in Spring 2014.
