The purpose of Program Planning and Assessment at Hartnell College is to obtain an honest and
authentic view of a program and to assess its strengths, opportunities, needs, and connection to the
mission and goals of the college. The process is based on the premise that each academic program
reviews assessment data and uses these data to plan for improvement. The results of these annual
cycles provide data for a periodic (every five years) comprehensive review that shows evidence of
improvement and outlines long-range goals.
The Program Planning and Assessment process will improve and increase the flow of information
about student learning, student success and student behavior at Hartnell College. The result of the
process will also improve institutional effectiveness.

D. PROGRAM GOALS

A new mission and vision is currently before the board for approval in February. In considering
your program’s future goals, please review the proposed new mission and vision statements.
VISION STATEMENT
Hartnell College will be nationally recognized for the success of our students by
developing leaders who will contribute to the social, cultural, and economic vitality of
our region and the global community.

Focusing on the needs of the Salinas Valley, Hartnell College provides educational

2. Review the enrollment data. Describe and analyze any patterns or anomalies
that you notice. What do you make of these patterns or anomalies? What

Enrollment for EGN-2 has been increasing over time (from 16 students in 2011 to 22 students
in 2012.) The increase is due to scheduling the class to better fit in the STEM grid. Previously
it had overlapped the Calculus offerings (MWF at noon) and this was changed to put it into a
better time slot. Enrollment in EGN-1 has remained consistently high for an engineering
course (22 students in 2011, 22 students in 2013). EGN-1 has been offered on the Alisal
campus, which can make it difficult for students to commute back and forth.
SUCCESS

Success rates for both EGN-1 and EGN-2 are consistently high (over 75%). This is consistent
with them both being introductory-level engineering classes with low or no prerequisites.

Data were gathered at the course level. It was reviewed, analyzed, and discussed by discipline
faculty both during the Flex Day and during regular Engineering discipline meetings of
Hornstein and Entekhabi. There are plans to make changes to the Engineering degree
program to align better with the draft MC for Engineering presently under review on CID.net.

5. Describe course level assessments results and how they will influence your
plans moving forward.
The results of the course level assessments were that 70% or greater of students scored 70% or
better on all assessments. Students have achieved success with regards to this assessment.
Since the result was satisfactory, the same methods of instruction can continue on in future
semesters.

Our assessments were successful, therefore the same methods of instruction can continue on in
future semesters.

The activity of aligning to the Engineering TMC, while still in progress, has been successful.
Four courses, EGN-2, EGN-4, EGN-6, and EGN-8, were all successfully aligned to the final CID descriptors. EGN-5 was created and aligned to the C-ID descriptor. This will significantly
assist students in transferring to CSU’s.
