A Prayer for the New Year
What shall I ask for the coming year
What shall my watchword be
What should thou do for me, dear Lord
What can I do for thee?
Lord, I would ask for a holy year
Spent in thy perfect will
Help me to walk in thy very steps
Help me to please thee still.
Lord, I would ask for a trustful year
Give me thy faith divine
Taking my full inheritance
Making thy fullness mine!
Lord, I would ask for a year of love
O let me love thee best
Give me the love that fail not
Beneath the hardest test.
Lord, I would ask for a year of prayer
Teach me to walk with thee
Breathe in my heart the Spirit's prayer
Pray thou thy prayer in me!
Lord, I would ask for the dying world
Stretch forth thy mighty hand
Thy truth proclaim, thy power display
This year in every land.
Lord, I would ask for a year of joy
Thy peace, thy joy divine
Springing undimmed through all the days
Be thy days of shade or shine.
Lord, I ask for a year of hope
Looking for thee to come
And hastening on that year of years
That brings us home to you.
Catholic Education Week
The Catholic Education Week Theme this year is
“Exploring Paths of Joy” (May 3 -8, 2015). As we
embark upon this new year filled with promise and
hope, we remember that we are called to “serve
others” to truly become a servant of Christ.
Virtue of Self-Control
The month of January will focus on the
Virtue of Self-Control. God has given us the
ability to choose how we react to what happens
around us. Self-control helps us to resist the
temptation to do something that we will regret or
that will harm ourselves or others. Self-control is
one of the marks of a spiritually mature person.
With self-control, one demonstrates patience,
knowing how to wait one's turn and avoids
aggression. We work to calm ourselves down and
think before reacting to a situation, being able to
think things through and do what is best for
everyone.
A person with self-control…





Is patient
Knows how to wait his/her turn
Can calm him/herself down and think
before reacting to situations
Knows how to avoid physical aggression
(hitting, kicking, pushing, fighting, etc.)
Can think things through and do what is
best for everyone

Teachers, students and parents can visit this site for

Mathematics K-8 at www.nelson.com
SCHOOL SAFETY ….
We continue to remind our students about school
safety. Students are reminded on a regular basis that
there is to be no physical contact, i.e. pushing,
shoving, hitting, kicking and punching. What can be
viewed as playing can result in students getting hurt.
We realize that in most cases, children do not mean to
hurt other children; however, because of physical
contact, students can get seriously hurt. Through
continuous reminders, we are trying to prevent this
from happening. We ask for your continued support
to remind your children to play with others without
physical contact.
BEFORE SCHOOL….
This is a reminder that staff is not on duty until 8:15
a.m. Please make sure you do not drop your
child off before 8:15 to ensure the safety of your
child.
Staff is directed to refer all visitors to the office. For
safety reasons we ask that parents not wait with their
child on the school yard. When picking up your child
after school please wait for them outside to avoid
congestion in the hallways.
HEALTH ALERT …
In each newsletter I will be bringing to your
attention that there are students in a number of
our classes who have a serious, and in some
cases, life threatening allergy to peanuts/nuts and
peanut/nut by-products. Even the mere exposure
to these products may cause a severe allergic
reaction for these children which could
potentially result in death. While these students
may not be in your child’s class, or eat in the area
that your child eats lunch, we are most concerned
about cross contamination which may occur if a
child who eats a peanut product touches a chair,
desk, book or any object that may be touched by
a child with this allergy. On behalf of these
students and their parents I ask for your cooperation to ensure that peanut and nut products
are NOT sent to the school.
THE FRONT DRIVEWAY….
Your assistance is required in helping to use the bus
loading zone located closest to our school. Please
respect our drive-in drop off points. Students and
parents are reminded to follow our already
established procedures for dropping off. Please share
the above information with family members or care
givers who may be picking up or dropping off your
child. As a reminder, we do not have a kiss and ride.
Please remember to PARK your car in the designated
areas. Thank you for ensuring the safety of your child
as well as all students at St. Mary Catholic School.
PARENTS AND GUARDIANS
(VISITORS) TO THE SCHOOL ….
We ask all visitors (parents, guardians and friends) to
use the front entrance and check in with the office so
we can assist you. Our students’ safety is our first
concern. If you want to drop off something for your
child or pick them up early, we ask that you go
through the office so we can call your child down.
SNOW AND ICE…
Now that the cold months have arrived and snow
and ice are plentiful, a reminder of our safety policy
is warranted. Throwing snowballs and sliding on
ice are NOT allowed.
As much fun as snow and ice are, they can also be
very dangerous when there are many people in one
area. Most student injuries happen during the
winter months. In order for our school to be as safe
as possible, the school rule must be that snow
stays on the ground – no snowballs, kicking
snow or any other activity with snow and ice that
could be harmful. Please take a few moments to
reinforce these important safety rules with your
children.
Indoor Shoes
Winter is here! To keep students warm and
comfortable, please ensure your child has a
pair of “indoor shoes”. This is also a safety
request, in the event of a fire alarm or
emergency, all occupants must vacate the
building regardless of the weather (without
time to put on boots or outdoor shoes).
Staying in for recess…
Recess
Colder weather is here again! Please ensure
that your child comes to school prepared to
participate in all activities including outdoor
recess. All children should have hats, scarves,
gloves, warm coats and boots labeled with
their names.
Moreover, health officials indicate that fresh
air is beneficial, as long as students are dressed
appropriately. On extremely cold days, we
limit the amount of time that students spend
outside. We obtain our weather information
from the Environment Canada Weather
Information Line and follow Board guidelines.
With the exception of these occasions, all
children will go outside for all recesses and the
lunch break.
TRANSPORTATION
Driveway Safety…
Important Transportation Reminders
As mentioned in our previous newsletters and in
conversations with parents and caregivers,
students who are eligible to take the school bus
should be waiting at their stop five-ten minutes
prior to the scheduled bus arrival time. It is the
parent's responsibility to ensure that FDK
(Kindergarten) and Grade One children are
met at the bus stop.
ELP and Grade One children who do not see a
parent or babysitter will remain on the bus and be
returned to the school to be picked up there by
the parent/babysitter.
BUS CANCELLATIONS/SCHOOL
CLOSING DUE TO BAD
WEATHER….
During the winter months inclement weather
may cause disruption of bus transportation and
regular school operations. A decision to cancel
school transportation and/or close schools is
usually made by 6:00 a.m. and will be announced
on various radio and television stations, please
see the below stations.
