VIRTUE OF LOVE
Dear God,
You have done such a marvelous job of creating us and the world around
us.
You have placed this creation, including all the people we meet, in our
care.
We come to you now asking for the grace and strength to love.
We want to love like Jesus loved – without holding back; without
wondering what’s in it
For me; so that everyone around us will know what your love looks like.
May we find the courage to forget ourselves on purpose for the good of
your people.
We ask this in name of Jesus, our brother, who lived to show us your
way.
Amen

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
At St. Julia, the spirit of God is alive! When you next walk
through the halls, stop and listen. You will hear the marvelous
work of the students and staff reflecting God’s graciousness in
their learning and teaching. This year’s Catholic Education
Week (May 1-6) gives us an opportunity to shine a light on
our school with this theme: Catholic Education Week
Celebrating the Spirit. The scriptural text comes from St.
Paul’s letter to the Romans: “All who are led by the Spirit of
God are children of God.” (Romans 8:14) St. Luke also refers
to the Spirit when he writes, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon
me” (Luke 4:18) The Psalmist calls on God’s Spirit to renew
the face of the earth. During this Catholic Education week, we
will open our doors to God’s spirit in a special way and
celebrate how the Spirit is renewing the face of St. Julia
School.
This year’s theme is Catholic Education: Celebrating the
Spirit:
Monday – The Spirit of Hospitality
Tuesday – The Spirit of Understanding
Wednesday – The Spirit of Wisdom
Thursday – The Spirit of Justice
Friday – The Spirit of Gratitude

SPRING BOOK FAIR
Scholastic Book Fair is coming to St. Julia’s! It will take
place from Friday, April 29, 2011 to Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
All students will have an opportunity to browse the Fair and
then visit again to make purchases. A schedule with specific
dates will follow. Parents are welcome to visit on those days
during school hours. We will open each day from 8:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. It will be closed over the lunch hour and will re-open at
12:30 p.m. The Fair will be open for the Welcome to
Kindergarten evening from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Come

WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE
As the warm weather approaches we would like to remind
students that they are expected to dress in a manner and attire
suitable for the occasion and appropriate to the school
environment.
Boys must wear full length T-shirts with a sleeve (no muscle
shirts or cut off T-shirts are allowed for regular classes or gym
wear).
Girls are not to wear anything strapless, spaghetti straps or
have bare midriffs.
Shorts are allowed provided they are modest. No short-shorts
or cut-off jeans will be allowed.
REPORTING HEAD INJURIES
Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we inform
parents of all reported head injuries at school. We do this in
recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the
head area. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you
informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member
know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school.
SAFETY REMINDERS
ENTRY INTO SCHOOL PROCEDURES
In the interest of student safety, pupils are asked not to bring
the following items to school: skateboards, roller blades,
scooters, baseball bats and hard utility balls. Also, we remind
students regularly about safe practices during recess times
such as: no contact sports, no play fighting, no soccer playing
on the asphalt using hard utility balls and reporting
problems to the teacher rather than taking matters into
their own hands.
In the interest of all student safety at St. Julia Elementary, we
ask that any person entering the building enter through the
main front door and proceed directly to the Main Office. We
do not encourage anyone to go directly into classrooms or
walk through halls without speaking to office staff first
and obtaining a visitor badge.
JAPAN RELIEF INITIATIVE
PINK IS LOVE
Ancient Japanese legend promises that
anyone who folds 1000 origami cranes
will be granted a wish by a crane.
As part of our Virtue of Love this month and to increase our
awareness of diversity we, at St. Julia participated in “Pink is
Love” day on Friday, April 15th, 2011. We asked everyone to
wear something pink. This was to show everyone that we at
St. Julia care. We are open minded, we are accepting of our
differences and respect each other. Wearing Pink on Friday
showed our support for diversity and our commitment to stop
discrimination and bullying. Let’s celebrate our differences!
Thank you to the Diversity Team, and to everyone for your
participation.
Charmaine C , Justin D, Sylvia S, Ariana L, Maya D,

For the last two weeks, donations have flooded in from St.
Julia community to assist in disaster relief for Japan. Our
crane folding committee has been diligently folding cranes for
each dollar donated. To date, we have raised $1,110.93 and
folded over 1000 cranes. Thank you to all who have made
donations or volunteered their time. We look forward to
sending our monetary donation to the Red Cross and shipping
1000 cranes to the Japanese Embassy in Ottawa to wish Japan
a speedy recovery in rebuilding their country.
A special thank you goes to Ms. Cheong and all the student
volunteers who came out to help with this fundraiser.

drives the Take Your Kids to Work Days). Welcome to
Kindergarten is an evening provided for the parents who have
registered for JK for this September.
STUDENT MONITORS NEEDED
St. Julia is currently looking for Student Monitors to assist us
during our lunch hour and outside during lunch recess. This is
a paid position. Please let us know if you are available on a
regular basis. All new hires will need to complete a Student

Reference Check. Please stop by the office if you are
interested.
EQAO
Students currently enrolled in grade 3 and 6 will participate in
the Provincial Assessment for Reading, Writing and
Mathematics. Timelines for this assessment go from May 31June 11, 2011. A letter outlining the particular testing days
will be sent home soon to all grade 3 to 6 parents.
Parents/Guardians are asked to avoid scheduling appointments
and vacations during this time period. This will ensure that all
students have the opportunity to complete all aspects of the
assessment. Thank you for your co-operation.
Please refer to the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board Calendar attached for the upcoming
2011-2012 School year.
PED POLICY
It is Board and school policy that all PEDs must be kept out of
sight, turned off and not used within school premises
(including portables) or during school-sanctioned activities
such as retreats, field trips, sports events, etc. To prevent the
loss or damage of PEDs, we encourage students to leave their
PEDs at home
SWISS CHALET & CELEBRITY SERVER PROGRAM
We are still accepting receipts from Swiss Chalet on Financial
Drive. Please Drop them off on the lunch table at the front
entrance of the school. Our next “Celebrity Server” evening
will be on Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 beginning at
6:00 PM. Mrs. Bitti’s Grade 4 class will be hosting the
families from St. Julia School. All are welcome to attend.
CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2011
Planning for next September is well under way. Current grade
level teachers, Resource staff and the administration will soon
begin the process of developing tentative classroom
placements. We spend much time taking into consideration
not only the needs of the individual child but the needs of all
children in the context of the larger classroom group. In each
class we strive to balance learning styles, gender, learning
needs and a cross section of abilities and behavioral needs.
Please note that new Ministry regulations of class size will
impose little flexibility in class configurations.
As you know your child best, we appreciate your input
concerning the learning style and environment your child
learns best in. If you feel that there are specific needs which
should be addressed in determining the placement of your
child, please send Mrs. Nichols a letter outlining the strengths
and needs of your child along with a description of his/her
learning style and the type of environment he/she excels in, no
later than May 6. We remind you that it is not appropriate to
request a specific teacher as staffing is tentative and things are
continually changing or to make requests to avoid necessary
combined grades. We will consider your input as well as
input from the classroom and resource teachers and if we can
accommodate your wishes, we will do so. However, this is
not always possible. Rest assured, our decisions are made
only after careful consideration of all the information and are
based on the individual good of each child balanced with the
common good of the entire school community
YOUTH IN MINISTRY

A HISTORICAL UNDERTANDING OF CATHOLIC
EDUCATION
Why did Catholic parents and students have to pay tuition to
attend a Catholic high school after grade ten?
In 1871 the Ontario government passed an Act to improve the
common schools and Grammar Schools in Ontario. This Act
abolished common and grammar schools and created public
schools for grades one to ten and high schools from grades
nine to thirteen. The highest official with the Department of
Education, Egerton Ryerson, commented that the 1871 Act did
not affect separate schools. The separate school boards
operating secondary school classes carried on, receiving
funding from grants and taxes. However, early in the twentieth
century the government passed legislation which forbade a
separate school board from offering education beyond grade
ten if its boundaries fell partially or fully within the
boundaries of a high school district. Thus, all but one separate
school board ( in Dublin) lost their ability to receive tax or
government grant financing beyond grade ten. Furthermore, if
a separate school board chose to continue operating grades
nine and ten, it received only elementary school grants for
them.
How did Catholic high Schools Survive?
Catholic Parents and students paid tuition after grade ten.
Parental groups raised money from draws, lotteries and school
vents. Parish priests contributed money from their Sunday
collections. Many separate school boards, including DufferinPeel, opened intermediate-division (i.e. grades seven to ten)
schools. With the vital assistance of the religious teaching
orders (which taught in and administered grades eleven to
thirteen for little or nothing), the diocese continued to operate
private Catholic high Schools and opened new ones. In fact,
Philip Pocock, the Archbishop of Toronto, decided in 1971 to
open one new Catholic high in the archdiocese every year
until the government approved tax and granted funding for
grade eleven to thirteen.
How was the Catholic high school issue resolved?
In 1984, Premier William Davis, edified by the commitment to
Catholic high schools of the Catholic community and
convinced of the injustice of truncated separate schools,
announced that the government would be completing the spate
school system to the end of high school. The Supreme Court
of Canada unanimously responded to a court challenge against
the ensuring legislation by asserting that separate schools
before Confederation were operating
secondary school education with
funding from taxes and government
grants and, therefore, section 93(1) of
the Canadian Constitution guaranteed
the right of separate school boards to
administer from junior kindergarten to
the end of high school. After almost
sixty years of financial sacrifice by the
Catholic community, Catholic high schools once more became
an equal partner in Ontario’s publicly funded school system.

Math Homework Help Pilot Project
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is pleased to
announce that once again it will be participating in the Math
Homework Help pilot project. This is the second year that the
students in our Board will have access to live, interactive
online math help through the expansion of a pilot project
funded by the Ministry of Education. Homework Help is free,
real-time math tutoring by certified Ontario teachers.
This project has now expanded to 31 English-Language
Boards across the Province of Ontario, and the project’s goal
remains to provide students in grades 7 to 10 with an afterhours online support in Mathematics.
Students can log in from Sunday to Thursday, 5:30 p.m. to
9:30 p.m. for 20 hours a week of individualized confidential
math tutoring. Through a whiteboard, typing and audio tools,
tutors provide on-the-spot interactive math support. Students
can learn from the questions posed by their peers and ask
their own questions as well.
If they can't wait until the discussion rooms open, videos of
best tutorials and commonly asked questions are available
anytime. Other online math resources include math games and
a virtual locker, where students can save their work.
To register for the site, visit the website www.ontario.ca/homeworkhelp.
Scroll down and you will find the link to the Homework Help Line.
Students will need their OEN number to register. This number is different
from their student number, and can be obtained from their school.
