That respect should come first and foremost from ourselves. We have to respect ourselves and then we will be able to respect others. We should also be able to expect to be treated with respect by everyone we meet—our brothers and sisters in Jesus. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at respecting ourselves as well as respecting those around us. A respect person … Treats himself/herself and everyone else with equal consideration and courtesy Uses a positive tone of voice and body language Avoids swearing, name-calling, put-downs and inappropriate gestures Says „excuse me‟, „please‟ and „pardon me‟ Avoids gossip March 2011 2 Gr. 2—1st Reconciliation 9:30 at St. Julia 3 Intermediate Math Mania at St. Jude 7 Primary Division to Living Arts Centre 8 Shrove Tuesday 8 School Council Meeting 7:00 p.m. 9 Ash Wednesday 9 New Pizza Form goes home 14-18 March Break—no school 21 Pizza Money due—last form for 2011 Lent Lent is a season of turning to God in simplicity and sincerity, as we prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter. Our hearts feel heavy as we remember our sins, but we are also confident in God‟s mercy and forgiveness. We will also have the opportunity to celebrate the virtue of Respect that guides our prayers and celebrations during the month of February. We will gather as divisions in the foyer for a liturgy and distribution of ashes during the day on Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lent Season. Lenten Alms Giving Each school within the Parish is asked to contribute to the St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank once during the school year. Our school is asked to make our contribution during Lent. Therefore we would like to ask families to contribute dry goods, and non-perishable foods to those less fortunate. All items can be brought in any time between Ash Wednesday and Easter (March 9 to April 25). We will also continue to collect quarters for the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur in our Lenten classroom boxes. Shrove Tuesday—”Pancake Day” March 8 Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. It‟s a day of penitence, to clean the sol and a day of celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself and to use up the foods that aren‟t allowed in Lent. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and receives absolution for them. During Lent there are many foods that some Christians— historically and today—would not eat: foods such as meat and fish, fats, eggs and milky foods. So that no food was wasted, families would have a feast on shriving Tuesday and eat up all the foods that wouldn‟t last the forty days of Lent. The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French name “Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday” Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the addition of flour. All the students at St. Julia will be able to enjoy some delicious pancakes on Tuesday, March 8th in celebration of Shrove Tuesday. Bobby‟s Hideaway in Streetsville will be supplying the 1,200 pancakes at cost and mixing the batter for us for free (www.bobbyshideaway.com). MichaelAngelo‟s (www.michaelangelos.ca) has sponsored the event by giving us a gift card to spend on syrup and napkins. We‟d also like to thank all the parents who have donated plates, offered to come and make pancakes and said we borrow their griddles. If you have a griddle they could use please let the office know. We are all very excited to mark this special day in a delicious and memorable way.! As you are aware, St. Julia is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause severe life threatening reaction. We appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by not sending any snacks that contain nuts or nut products, which could potentially harm a pupil. Please avoid sending food for birthday or special occasions. There are many alternatives such as stickers and pencils. Thank you for your cooperation.
