God has given us the virtues of friends and companions to keep us company and to help us out
along the way.
That respect should come first and foremost
from ourselves. We have to respect ourselves
and then we will be able to respect others. We
should also be able to expect to be treated with
respect by everyone we meet—our brothers and
sisters in Jesus.
Through prayer and concentration, we can get
better at respecting ourselves as well as respecting those around us.
A respect person …
Treats himself/herself and everyone else
with equal consideration and courtesy
Uses a positive tone of voice and body language
Avoids swearing, name-calling, put-downs
and inappropriate gestures
Says „excuse me‟, „please‟ and „pardon me‟
Avoids gossip

Lent
Lent is a season of turning to God in simplicity and sincerity, as we prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter. Our
hearts feel heavy as we remember our sins, but we are also
confident in God‟s mercy and forgiveness.
We will also
have the opportunity to celebrate the virtue of Respect
that guides our prayers and celebrations during the month
of February. We will gather as divisions in the foyer for a
liturgy and distribution of ashes during the day on Ash
Wednesday. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of our
Lent Season.
Lenten Alms Giving
Each school within the Parish is asked to contribute to the
St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank once during the school year.
Our school is asked to make our contribution during Lent.
Therefore we would like to ask families to contribute dry
goods, and non-perishable foods to those less fortunate.
All items can be brought in any time between Ash Wednesday and Easter (March 9 to April 25). We will also continue
to collect quarters for the Sisters of Notre Dame De Namur in our Lenten classroom boxes.
Shrove Tuesday—”Pancake Day” March 8
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. It‟s a day
of penitence, to clean the sol and a day of celebration as
the last chance to feast before Lent begins. Lent is a time
of abstinence, of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is
the last chance to indulge yourself and to use up the foods
that aren‟t allowed in Lent. Shrove Tuesday gets its name
from the ritual of shriving that Christians used to undergo
in the past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and
receives absolution for them.
During Lent there are many foods that some Christians—
historically and today—would not eat: foods such as meat
and fish, fats, eggs and milky foods. So that no food was
wasted, families would have a feast on shriving Tuesday and
eat up all the foods that wouldn‟t last the forty days of
Lent. The need to eat up the fats gave rise to the French
name “Mardi Gras / Fat Tuesday” Pancakes became associated with Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could
use up all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the
addition of flour.
All the students at St. Julia will be able to enjoy some delicious pancakes on Tuesday, March 8th in celebration of
Shrove Tuesday. Bobby‟s Hideaway in Streetsville
will be supplying the 1,200 pancakes at cost and
mixing
the batter for us for free
(www.bobbyshideaway.com). MichaelAngelo‟s (www.michaelangelos.ca) has sponsored the event by giving us a gift card to spend
on syrup and napkins. We‟d also like to thank all the
parents who have donated plates, offered to come and
make pancakes and said we borrow their griddles. If you
have a griddle they could use please let the office know.
We are all very excited to mark this special day in a delicious and memorable way.!

Good bye and Welcome
As we started term two, we said good bye to Mrs. Child, our
head secretary. Students and staff organized a beautiful
send off for Ms. Child. Thank you to the School Council
who presented Ms. Child with a gift and assortment of delicious cup cakes created by Mrs. Patton. Please join me in
welcoming Mrs. Charette to the position of Head Secretary
at St. Julia School. Her first day at our school will be on
Tuesday, February 22, 2011. Thank you to Mrs. Jones who
has assumed full time duties in the office and welcome to
Mrs. DeSouza who will be with us until Mrs. Charette begins at St. Julia. We also say good bye to Mrs. De Luca, Ms.
Schirripa and Mrs. Hurst. We welcome back Mrs. Cardoso

Thank you to the St. Julia School
Community—staff,
students and families who have been so generous to me
over the past 10 years, right from the beginning at St.
Barbara. It has been my honour and privilege to serve all of
you as Head Secretary. I am
forever grateful for the love
and kindness you have shown
me over the years! May God
continue to bless this community.

Artists In The School
On Wednesday, February 9, the Little Red Theatre
performed a play for the primary students. Thank
you to the School Council for subsidizing this event.
In partnership with RBC Foundation, Free The Children is
excited to present the H20 4U speaking tour and leadership program. They will be at St. Julia on Tuesday, February 15. This water-focused speaking tour is specifically
designed for grade 6-8 students and is free of cost,
thanks to the generous contribution of the RBC Foundation.
Valentines Day Activities
On Friday, February 11, the Grade 7 & 8
will be having a Valentine‟s day dance.
Primary and Junior classes may be celebrating with special activities. As you are
aware, St. Julia is an allergen aware school. There are pupils in attendance who suffer from severe and life threatening allergies to certain foods, such as peanut and nut
products. Exposure to the smallest quantities can cause
severe life threatening reaction. We appreciate the cooperation of the entire school community by not sending
any snacks that contain nuts or nut products, which could
potentially harm a pupil. Please avoid sending food for
birthday or special occasions. There are many alternatives
such as stickers and pencils. Thank you for your cooperation.
Black History Month
February is Black History Month and is celebrated with
announcements that focus on the recognition, preservation and promotion of Black peoples and their collective
histories through education, research, and cooperation. On Friday, February 18 our Intermediate Diversity
Representatives will be organizing a Black History Presentation in our gymnasium for all classes.

their child in a Grade 1 French Immersion at St. Gertrude,

submission of applications is 2 pm on Wednesday, February

The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board of Trustees has approved the expansion of the French Immersion
program to St. Pio of Pietrelcina, St. Elizabeth Seton and
St. Peter Elementary Schools commencing with two Grade 1
classes in each of the three schools beginning in September 2011. The French Immersion parent/guardian information sessions concerning the three (3) new (additional) sites
for September 20011 are scheduled as follows:

Information Session in order to obtain an application.
Please note that the deadline for submission of applications

Winter Attire
Please ensure that your children come to school with hats,
scarves and gloves, winter outerwear and boots. It is also
important to reinforce the necessity to wear these items
outside. In many cases, we have found students in the yard
with limited suitable attire. All students should have indoor footwear as well. This is required in case of an emergency evacuation since students will not have time to put on
their boots if they have to evacuate the building.
Extra Pizza Day
For all those students who had ordered
pizza on February 2 when we had a school
closure day due to winter weather conditions will receive their pizza they
ordered on
Friday , February 11
Please note that the next pizza order form
will be going home March 9 for orders up to the end of the
school year.
Finger Lickin’in Fun
Thanks to all the families who participated in the Swiss
Chalet Servers Night on Financial Drive. It was fun for
the students and a great opportunity to raise money for
our new score board. Please continue to bring in your receipts when you eat in or take out from the Financial
Drive Swiss Chalet. There is a box in the foyer for receipt collection and 10 percent of the total money spent
will be donated back to St. Julia

EQAO Dates for 2011
May 31 through June 11 have been designated for the
Provincial EQAO testing. We ask that parents of
Grade 3 and 6 students make sure that they mark
these dates on their calendar, and we ask that parents
do not book appointments at all during this time span.
Students‟ attendance during this time period is absolutely essential.
We urge you to check your property tax bill to ensure that
your support is directed to your local Catholic school board,
in our case, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board. If you are a tenant, you can verify your support by
contacting our Admissions Department at (905) 890-0708,
ext. 24511, 24512, or 24519, or your municipal office. By
ensuring that your are accurately recorded as a Catholic
school supporter, you can help deliver a powerful message to
the government about the level of support for publicallyfunded Catholic education in Ontario. In order to be eligible
to vote for your local Catholic school board trustee, you
must be registered as a separate school supporter.
How Boys and Girls Learn Differently
Thanks to the 50 parents who came out to see our parenting expert, Michael Reist, on January 25th. He gave a
great talk on how boys and girls learn differently and many
parents commented that they found his message invaluable.
To learn more about him, you can visit his Web site at
www.michaelreist.ca Some of the Web sites he recommended for parents to visit include ww.kids-in-mind.com.,
www.allkindsofminds.org, www.apsgo.ca and
ww.bewebaware.ca., School Council hopes to apply for the
ProGrant from the Ministry again next year to continue to
offer resources to our parents. If you have any information on speakers, or ideas about other ways to spend this
money, please let the office know.

A Sweet Way to Raise Money
For those families taking part in the 2011 Chocolate
Fundraiser, thank you from the St. Julia School Council. The money raised goes to enrich our children's educational experience by giving them opportunities in Literacy, Numeracy, Arts, Science, Physical Education and
Spirituality that are not normally available. The chocolate bars are going home on February 10th and can be
sold until February 24th. All money is due back no
later than February 24th and cheques made out to
St. Julia school are preferred over cash.
Personal Electronic Devices
As part of our efforts to promote and maintain a positive
Catholic climate in our schools, the Board has approved a policy regarding Personal Electronic Devices (PEDs) on school
property. To promote respect for the dignity of all members
of our school community and to enhance student achievement
and safety, the use of PEDs is strictly prohibited in the school
(including portables) or during school related activities (such
as retreats, field trips, sporting events, etc.).
Failure to comply with this policy may result in the confiscation of the PED and /or disciplinary action as outlined in the
Catholic Code of Conduct 2001. The school and the DufferinPeel Catholic District School Board assume no responsibility of
the loss, recovery, repair or replacement for an PED brought
onto school property.
It is the policy of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board that PEDs are to be kept out of sight, turned off and
not used within school premises or during school sanctioned
events. To prevent the loss or damage of PEDs, the school
encourages students to leave their PEDs at home.
PEDs are Wireless and/or Portable Electronic Handheld
Equipment that include, but are not limited to existing and
emerging Mobile Communication Systems and Smart
Technologies (cell phones, smart phones, walkie-talkies,
pagers, etc.). Portable Internet Devices (mobile managers, mobile messengers, BlackBerry handsets, etc.). PDAs
(Palm organizers, pocket PCs, etc.). Handheld Entertainment Systems (video games, CD players, compact DVD
players, MP3 players, iPods, Walkman etc., digital or film

Recorders (tape recorders, camcorders, etc.). Spy Gadgets (spy cameras, covert listing devices, etc.), and any
other PEDS also include any current or emerging Wireless
Handheld Technologies or Portable IT Systems that can
be used for the purpose of communication, entertainment,
data management, word processing, wireless internet access, image capture/recoding, sound recording and information transmitting/receiving/storing, etc.
