Christmas Blessing
O God, as light comes from the candles of our Advent wreath,
may the blessing of Jesus Christ come to us, warming our
hearts and brightening our way. May Christ our Savior
bring life into the darkness of this world, and to us, as we
wait for His coming.
Amen

LOST AND FOUND
Our lost and found is overflowing! Be sure to take a look. All unclaimed items will be
sent to those in need on Thursday, December 18, 2014.
SCHOOL COUNCIL UPDATE
Our Frozen Movie Night was a great success. We raised about $400 to
be used to enrich the classroom experience. The money we raise during
fundraisers like Boogie-a-thon, pizza lunches and movie nights goes
towards paying for things like school trips ($3150), the Raz Kids license
($800), the stained glass projects ($1500), busing for school masses
($2800), and bringing in outside dramatic artists and dancers to perform
for teach and engage the students ($5500). Because this year’s Boogie-athon raised approximately $2,500 less than last year, we will have to raise
the price of pizza to $1.75 a slice instead of $1.50 a slice starting in
February. This will cover the cost of the commitments we have made to
the students this year. Thank you in advance for your support.
STUDENT COUNCIL UPDATE
The new Mr. Sub order forms are included with this newsletter. Funds
raised through the sub orders and popcorn sales support Student Council
initiatives such as adding to our Eco-classroom, purchasing new school
jerseys and supplementing classroom activities.
CURRICULUM CORNER-MENTAL MATH
“One of the reasons these [mental math and estimation] are highlighted
is that solving questions mentally helps to force a student to focus on the
relationships between numbers and the effect of number operations as
opposed to simply memorizing rules for performing particular types of
computations. Mental math and estimation strategies are also useful in
everyday life.” Dr. Marion Small
Offering children opportunities to explain their thinking in a nonthreatening way can help develop flexible thinkers and build confidence
in mathematics. There are multiple ways to solve a problem and children
need to discover what works best for them. Here is an example of how
you can support your child at home: Ask your child to figure out what 36
+ 19 is without using pencil and paper. Solve it in their head then ask
them to explain to you how they solved that problem. Look for them using
friendly numbers such as rounding to 10, skip counting on a number line,
or using place value. If more than one do the question you can discuss and
highlight how each person may have arrived at the answer using a
different thinking strategy.
