LIBRARY NEWS
It has been a busy start to the school year in the library!
Library book exchange is in full service for all our students at St. Julia including all our new students in Full Day Kindergarten. Please be aware that if your child is in Kindergarten -
Grade 3, students visit the library on a weekly basis to borrow one book. Students in grade 4 - 8 visit the library every other week, borrowing two books at a time (or in case of the grade 8's, three books at a time). Please remind your child to return their books on their library days in order that they may take out a new book. In October, we hosted a very successful Scholastic Book Fair! We sold $6526.65 worth of books! What a record! Wow! That equates to $2937.00 worth of books to support our school literacy program. Thank you to all students, parents, and teachers that came out to support our Book Fair! Your support is most appreciated!
CURRICULUM CORNER
Parent tip for supporting your child at home: Speak Using
Your First Language .
Parents who continue to speak with their children in their first language at home do not slow down their children’s learning of English. On the contrary, children need to be able to relax into a language they are comfortable speaking when they get home. Parents are being most helpful when they encourage their children to talk with them in that language about the world around them and about what they are learning in school.” Supporting English Language
Learners in Kindergarten – A practical Guide for Ontario
Educators, 2008, pg 26.
Getting Students Hooked on Reading:
Tapping into student interests is a great way to encourage your child to read. Good reading habits become established when students want to read. Notice what interests your child. If a child likes a book, it is highly likely they will enjoy other books by the same author. Graphic novels and non-fiction books are a preferred by many children. If your child is a resistant reader consider trying different text forms such as these.
CANADIAN FOOD FOR CHILDREN
Thank you to everyone who has been donating hard candies for the
Dr. Simone candy drive. Your candies will bring smiles to the faces of many children world wide.
CASUAL FRIDAYS
You may observe that the staff dresses in a casual manner on Fridays. Through donations made on these Fridays, we are supporting Share Life and/or the United
Way of Peel .

With the wet and snowy weather on the horizon it is important that students have indoor shoes. When students enter school at the beginning of the day we ask that they remove their boots and put on dry indoor shoes. Students must also have appropriate shoes to participate in physical education classes.
SCHOOL SECURITY
Please note that the school office hours are 8:00 am-4:00 pm. It is important that students gather all of their materials prior to leaving school at the end of the day. For security reasons, classrooms are locked at the end of the day and our custodians are busy cleaning our school and will not open doors to parents or students .

We would like to remind parents of the need to have a network of support to care for children especially in case of midday illness. Peel Health repeatedly recommends that the best practice to prevent the spread of viruses is:
wash hands with soap and water thoroughly and often
to cough or sneeze into a sleeve or tissue
stay home if you are sick
When children become sick during the course of the school day, a plan needs to be in place to care for him/her. As with all medical issues, we continue to take direction from Peel
Health on how to best respond to community illness.
CYBER SAFETY
The following are some cyber safety tips from the Peel
Police Youth Education Officer. Please review with your children.
