The students had an eyeopening week. We hope that we will all continue to participate in some of these activities regularly. MATH MANIA March 27th was the annual Intermediate Mississauga Brampton Central Math Mania Academic Competition. The purpose of the competition was to provide challenging mathematical activities that needed to be solved in an allotted time. Five students were chosen to represent St. Julia at this event. They are: Charlene C., Anson C., Zak D., Michael E., and Nicole S. They made St. Julia proud as they worked together as a team, displaying much respect towards each other as well as towards their competitors. Not only did they have a lot of fun practising their mathematical talents, they finished in FIRST place overall out of fifteen schools! They were the first team in St. Julia’s history to place in the top three, never mind in first place! Way to go St. Julia Suns! You made us VERY proud! CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK: MAY 4-9 During Catholic Education Week, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, the province and to Canada. Our Catholic Graduate Expectations challenge students to articulate in society those fundamental values that underpin Catholic education. The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is: Catholic Education: Serving in the Love of Christ Catholic schools are Catholic communities. Catholic schools are faith communities. We – parents, students, teachers, administrative and support staff – walk and grow together in the faith which we received at our Baptism. And it is the ‘together’ that we grow. Our growth is primarily a relationship with God, who at our Baptism, called us by name. But the response of each of us to that growth is both personal and communal. We grow in our faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic community be that of our local parish, our home, or our Catholic school community. ‘I am among you as one who serves.’ (Luke 22:27e) The sub-themes for Catholic Education Week 2014 are as follows: Monday: Serve with faithfulness Tuesday: Serve with humility Wednesday: Serve with compassion Thursday: Serve with justice Friday: Serve with joy Join us in the school gym on Monday, May 5 for a special school wide “Music Monday” with astronaut Chris Hadfield. On Thursday, May 8, at 9:00 am we will be having our Acceptance virtue assembly in the gym. All are welcome to attend. . 10th Year Anniversary St. Julia is 10 years young! Join us on Wednesday, June 4 from 6:00-7:30 for a celebration with staff, parents, students and alumni of St. Julia. We will be starting with a liturgy at 6:00 pm in the school gym followed by a walk down memory lane. AROUND THE HALLS Over the month of March, the BLAST team has continued to share anti-bullying tips each morning over the announcements. The BLAST team continues to encourage students to share their experiences and own advice each week by placing letters in the BLAST box. This month the BLAST team will be connecting their anti-bullying message to the Season of Lent and will introduce new activities to promote their message to the school community. ANTI-BULLYING TIP OF THE MONTH: Change the School Community. Work with others to stop bullying behavior; your whole school will benefit. Remember: A lot of kids have to cope with bullying. You are not alone. No one deserves to be bullied. CRAM THE CRUISER On Friday March 28th, our Youth Faith Ambassadors organized the CRAM-THE-CRUISER event for our Lenten Food Drive. We want to thank everyone at St. Julia for an amazing outpouring of donations of non-perishable food items for those less fortunate than us. The Peel Police and members of St. Vincent de Paul were incredibly impressed with our generosity. It seemed like everyone had some fun! The total amount of food items collected was 1, 948. Great work everyone! WALKING WEDNESDAY Walking Wednesdays continue to be a fun, healthy part of our St. Julia eco-school initiative. Every Wednesday our Walking Wednesday crew celebrates and encourages those students who arrive at school on their own fuel while cutting down on pollution. The WW Crew includes: Chloe C., Zoe O., Brendan L., Dean D., Nikita D., Joseph M., Luca M., Josh N. and Michael V. Recently we participated in Enviro-Week as a lead up to Earth Hour. Some of our WW Crew formed the Walking Wednesday Wailers and sang the Walking Wednesday theme song live at our kick-off assembly on Monday complete with live xylophones and percussion. The committee will once again meet with the Peel Health Nurse in April to assess the school's participation in the Walking Wednesday program. Thanks to all those students who have continued to brave the cold every week through our long winter season! Just think how lovely the walk will be when we finally get to enjoy some spring weather! Join in every Wednesday! WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE As the warm weather approaches we would like to remind students that they are expected to dress in a manner and attire suitable for the occasion and appropriate to the school environment. Students must wear full length T-shirts with a sleeve (no muscle shirts or cut off T-shirts are allowed for regular classes or gym wear). Shorts are allowed provided they are modest. No short-shorts or cut-off jeans will be allowed. SAFETY REMINDERS In the interest of student safety, pupils are asked not to bring the following items to school: skateboards, roller blades, scooters, baseball bats and hard utility balls. Also, we remind students about safe practices during recess times such as: no contact sports or play fighting, soccer playing on asphalt using soft utility balls only and reporting problems to teachers rather than taking matters into their own hands. A Message from St. Vincent de Paul Society Dear St. Julia: Thanks to you, your staff and students and to our public officers for the large donation of food. Fred weighed the food in at 1440 lbs., a great donation! This enables us to continue to provide 2 or 3 bags of food each time we visit a needy family. When we have finished our food pickups this week we plan to take a load of excess food to the Eden Community Food bank. Again, on behalf of our St. Vincent de Paul group and the needy families we serve, THANK YOU. Jack Guiry PARENT INFORMATION CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR 2014-2015 Planning for next September is well under way. Current grade level teachers, Resource staff and the administration will soon begin the process of developing tentative classroom placements. We spend much time taking into consideration not only the needs of the individual child but the needs of all children in the context of the larger classroom group. In each class we strive to balance learning styles, gender, learning needs and a cross section of abilities and behavioral needs. Please note that Ministry regulations of class size will impose little flexibility in class configurations. As you know your child best, we appreciate your input concerning the learning style and environment your child learns best in. If you feel that there are specific needs which should be addressed in determining the placement of your child, please send Mrs. Nichols a letter outlining the strengths and needs of your child along with a description of his/her learning style and the type of environment he/she excels in, no later than May 2, 2014. We remind you that it is not appropriate to request a specific teacher as staffing is tentative and things are continually changing or to make requests to avoid necessary combined grades. We will consider your input as well as input from the classroom and resource teachers and if we can accommodate your wishes, we will do so. However, this is not always possible. Rest assured, our decisions are made only after careful consideration of all the information and are based on the individual good of each child balanced with the common good of the entire school community. WELCOME TO KINDERGARTEN EVENING As you know, the 2014-2015 school year will be the first year for ‘Full-Day Kindergarten’ here at St. Julia. As a result, on Tuesday, May 13, 2014, we are inviting all Kindergarten parents to our ‘Welcome To Kindergarten’ evening. The event will take place at St. Julia beginning at 6:30 pm. There will be quite a number of changes to both our scheduling and our program in the year ahead. So, in addition to the parents of our Junior Kindergarten students, we are also inviting parents of Senior kindergarten, who may wish to better understand the new program. As always, this evening is possible because of the corporate support of ‘The Learning Partnership’ (the same group that drives the Take Your Kids to Work days). We look forward to seeing the parents of both our new and returning kindergarten students. SPEAK UP GRANT St. Julia is proud to unveil its latest tool for communication and promotion of school spirit. With help from the Provincial Speak-Up Grant, St. Julia has installed a 60 inch television monitor in our main foyer. The TV will be tied to the school’s computer system and used to display welcome messages and daily announcements as well as videos of special events and responses at assemblies. It is our hope that students will be assuming a fair share of the responsibility for entering content and keeping it up-to-date. Special thanks to Mrs. Higgins for spearheading the project. For Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, these are: JK – Grade 1 Grades 2 – 4 Grades 5 – 8 Grades 9 – 12 1.0 kilometre 1.6 kilometres 2.0 kilometres 4.8 kilometres The purpose of this communication is to ensure that parents of students currently in grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8 are aware that transportation eligibility status for your child may change next year as your child moves, respectively, to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the distance criteria increases at the noted grade levels, students who are currently eligible for transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8, may no longer be eligible for transportation when they move to the next grade level. Effective June 1, transportation eligibility information for 2014-2015 will be available on our website. To confirm the transportation eligibility status for your child for the 2014-2015 school year, please access our website at www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I Eligible for Transportation?” icon, select 2014-2015 and enter the required address, 2014-2015 grade level, and program information to obtain the transportation eligibility status for your child. This notification is provided to advise parents of a potential change in transportation eligibility and, therefore, provide sufficient time for parents to make arrangements to get their child to school, if required. Safety First when dropping students off at school The safety of all children and staff must be considered as paramount at all times when dropping students off at school. The number of serious incidents related to traffic circulation at the front of the school and in the Kiss and Ride area during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal has risen. These incidents include vehicles entering the site in the wrong direction, parking and pulling out of no parking zones, parking in bus lanes, to name a few. It is imperative that all parents and guardians who drive their children to school adhere to the traffic circulation plan and comply with the traffic and parking signage on the site. It is equally imperative that all drivers follow the direction of staff managing the traffic circulation on the school site. Thank you for your consideration and co-operation with this important matter. Newsletter Insert & School Webpage ARE YOU TICKED?
