AROUND THE HALLS
BLACK HISTORY MONTH
During the month of February, students at St. Julia will
discuss, learn about and recognize the many valuable
contributions made by people of African descent. Students
from Grade 5 -8 enjoyed a presentation from Leslie
McCurdy. McCurdy performed the life story of Harriet
Tubman, the famous African American abolitionist and
humanitarian. St. Julia students have also been fostering
their interest by borrowing books from the library about
notable African Americans in history, taking particular
interest in figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa
Parks. These notable African Americans have been
highlighted during our morning announements.
During the month of January, the BLAST Team organized an
assembly that included a powerful drama presentation and a
power point that informed students about the different types
of bullying which included real life examples. Also, this past
month,
the BLAST Team has placed a box in the office for students
to put in any letters or notes regarding personal bullying
issues. During the announcements, members have been
focusing on informing students about social and
cyberbullying.
ANTI-BULLYING TIP OF THE MONTH:
Stop the Bullies – Some bullies like to threaten and intimidate
others with their size, taking other’s stuff and say insulting things.
Other bullies like to spread mean gossip and lies, control friends by
telling them how to think about other people or put others down.
When you observe any of this happening, you can SPOT THE
BULLY and try stopping it by standing up to the bully or telling a
trusted adult.
DON’T FRET FRIDAYS
The Don't Fret Friday’s guitar club continues to run every
Friday over the lunch period in room 102. If you have a guitar
and a tune to play on it please drop by and join in!
FRENCH CAFE
On Thursday, February 27th, 2014, we will be having our “Café
Français” here at St Julia. All students from grades 1- 8 will be
invited to come to the café throughout the day. At the café
they will enjoy a taste the Parisian experience with music,
decor and food. Over the next couple of weeks the students
will be preparing for this wonderful event.
ST. JULIA ECO-SCHOOLS
During the winter months the Eco-team continues to offer handy
tips to our students daily. We encourage you to discuss these
tips as a family and try to apply them in your everyday life, ie:
reusable water bottles and snack containers reduce waste.
Please find a way to participate in our weekly walking
Wednesday campaign. STAY GREEN!
YOUTH FAITH AMBASSADORS
On Tuesday January 21st, 2014 our Youth Faith
Ambassadors represented St. Julia at The
Mississauga Brampton Central Family of Schools
retreat. They were commissioned in their role
as Youth Faith Ambassadors by Associate Pastor,
Father Joshua Roldan, in a very special Eucharistic
Celebration and Commissioning Ceremony. The
mass took place at St. Francis Xavier Catholic
Church. The students participated in a variety of faith
filled activities throughout the day. The mission of
the Youth Faith Ambassadors is to give honor
and glory to God through service. Students continue
to better their own faith development by bettering
their communities through service and an active,
living faith. Thank you to all that participated.
INTERMEDIATE HOCKEY
Our intermediate hockey team participated in the 7th
annual All Saints’ tournament at Iceland arena in
January. The team demonstrated great skill in both
the attacking zone and the defensive zone throughout
the two day tournament. Mr. Monahan, Mr. Morrice
and Mr. Turner would like to congratulate Matthew
C., Hormoz C., Lucas E., Matthew M., Jordan P., Zak
D., Christian D., Dean D., Damian G., Brendan L.,
Luca M., Robert M., and Joshua N. for having fun
and finishing in 3rd place in our tier.
WELCOME BACK & GOOD BYE
Welcome back to Mrs. Laratta and thank you to Ms. Child who
did a fabulous job teaching the grade 6 class while Mrs. Laratta
was on maternity leave.
AROUND THE HALLS
LENT
Lent is a season of turning to God in simplicity and
sincerity, as we prepare to celebrate the joy of Easter.
Our hearts feel heavy as we remember our sins, but
we are also confident in God’s mercy and
forgiveness. We will also have the opportunity to
celebrate the virtue of Kindness that guides our
prayers and celebrations during the month of March.
We will gather as divisions in the front foyer for a
liturgy and distribution of ashes during Ash
Wednesday. This marks the beginning of our Lenten
season.
LENTEN ALMS GIVING
Our Lenten food drive for St. Vincent de Paul has
started. Our Youth Faith Ambassadors will be
promoting this alms giving over the announcements
and during our virtue assemblies. We will be
accepting donations of non-perishable food items for
those less fortunate in our parish community until
Tuesday, March 18th, 2014.
SHROVE TUESDAY
Shrove Tuesday is the day before Lent starts. It’s a
day of penitence, to clean the soul and a day of
celebration as the last chance to feast before Lent
begins. Lent is a time of abstinence, of giving things
up. Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge
yourself and to use up the foods that aren’t allowed in
Lent. Shrove Tuesday gets its name from the ritual
of shriving that Christians used to undergo in the
past. In shriving, a person confesses their sins and
receives absolution for them.
During Lent there are many foods that some
Christians historically and today would not eat: foods
such as meat and fish, fats, eggs and milky foods. So
that no food was wasted, families would have a feast
on shriving Tuesday and eat up all the foods that
wouldn’t last the forty days of Lent. The need to eat
up the fats gave rise to the French name “Mardi Gras
/ Fat Tuesday”, pancakes became associated with
Shrove Tuesday as they were a dish that could use up
all the eggs, fats and milk in the house with just the
addition of flour.
100 DAYS OF SCHOOL
On Monday, February 10, 2014 St. Julia celebrated the 100th
day of school! In celebration grades 1s and 2s participated
in hands on activities that involve counting and numbers to
100. Teachers and students also dressed up like 100 year old
people! What a FEN-dred filled day!
IMMUNIZATION
The Region of Peel Health Department has informed
the school that some of you will be receiving an
"Immunization Record Review" letter. If you receive
one of these letters, it is because the Region does not
have a complete immunization record on file for your
child. Please read the letter carefully and contact the
Region if you have further questions or compliance
documentation to submit. You may contact the
Region of Peel at (905) 799-7700 or by visiting their
website www.immunizepeel.ca
2014 ATLANTIC SALMON HATCHERY
PROGRAM
We are excited to once again be participating in The
Lake Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program
which offers a classroom Hatchery Program. Salmon
raised in the hatchery become part of the overall
number released into the target streams annually.
The goals of the program are to:
 -engage students in a large-scale, historic restoration
effort
 -deliver messages on habitat, stewardship, and
biodiversity using Atlantic salmon and the Greenbelt as
tangible examples of those concepts
 -foster a sense of ownership and stewardship towards
an environment that now has “their” fish
 - achieve a broader public awareness for the Lake
Ontario Atlantic Salmon Restoration Program as the
students take their experiences with the classroom
hatcheries back to their families and communities. The
grade two students will have the opportunity to “adopt”
a salmon and release it into the Credit River in the late
spring. The incubator will be placed in the computer
lab for all classes to see and share in the experience.
We hope to continue this partnership in subsequent
years so more students will have this opportunity.
EQAO DATES
Grade 3 & 6 students will be participating in province
wide testing from May 26 - June 6, 2014. It is very
important that student’s attendance is punctual. We ask
that parents of students in these grades ensure that
their children are in attendance during these weeks.
PARENT INFORMATION
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS
Pancakes on the griddle
Our annual Pancake Tuesday event is Tuesday, March 4th. If
you would like to volunteer to make pancakes at the school that
day, please ensure you have a current police check on file in the
office and email Siobhan Kukolic at
siobhan_kukolic@yahoo.com to confirm your interest in
volunteering. You will be needed at the school from 9am until
approximately 11:30am. If you can't attend but can donate a
griddle for the event, please let Siobhan Kukolic know and drop
it at the school on Monday, March 3rd.
Mr. Lima, a parent at the school, has agreed to pay for the
pancake batter that Bobby from Bobby's Hideaway Restaurant
in Streetsville is donating at cost. And an anonymous donator
is supplying plates, napkins, cutlery and syrup. We ask that
each child donates $2 to take part in Pancake Tuesday and this
money will be given to Share Life.
Frozen family fun
Our Progrant money will go towards a St. Julia Skate-a-thon
this year to promote health, wellness and fun. The details are
as follows...
When: Saturday, March 1st from 2:00 PM-4:00 PM.
Where: Mississauga Valley Community Centre.
Everyone is welcome. Helmets are required for all kids. There
will be skating around the outside of the ice, games in the
middle and music on the speakers. This fun event is open to all
families with at least one child at Julia.
Healthy body, mind and soul
St. Julia was host to the family of schools meeting on January
16th. There are about 17 elementary and high schools in our
family of schools region. About 50 people gathered in the St.
Julia school lobby including trustees, superintendents, teachers,
principals, vice principals, school council chairs and parents for
some food, guest speakers and inspiration. The topic was the
importance of having a healthy body, mind and soul. St. Julia
Co-Chair, Siobhan Kukolic, spoke for a few minutes about her
recently launched not-for-profit initiative called Blueberry
Shark, which was named after a healthy fruit and the only
animal that doesn't get cancer. The mission of Blueberry Shark
is to create the healthiest kids in the world. To learn more, you
can visit www.blueberryshark.org. The first meeting is
Wednesday, March 5th at Meadowvale Community Centre
located on 6655 Glen Erin Drive, if you are able to attend.
AFTER SCHOOL ARRANGEMENTS & CLASSROOM
INTERRUPTIONS
The office often gets requests from students to make phone calls
home to ask parents to bring forgotten items such as running
shoes, agendas or textbooks/homework. We are reinforcing with
students that it is their responsibility to bring all necessary items
to school and to arrange in advance their out of school activities.
Students will not be given permission to use the phone to make
such calls. Also, please make after school arrangements with
your children prior to school. We make every attempt to
minimize interruptions to classes.
CONCUSSIONS
Concussions are brain injuries caused by excessive, rapid
movement of the brain inside the skull. This movement
causes damage that changes how brain cells function, leading
to symptoms that can be physical (headaches, dizziness),
cognitive (problems remembering or concentrating), or
emotional (feeling depressed). A concussion can result from
a blow to the head or body in any number of activities
including receiving a check in hockey, falling from a jungle
gym, or slipping on an icy sidewalk. All head injuries can be
difficult to diagnose, however, a concussion is the most
difficult head injury to diagnose. Brain scans cannot
determine if a concussion exists. The school calls parents
whenever a child has hit their head. It is important that
parents also keep the school informed if their child has had a
head injury during an extracurricular activity. The school
will work with the family to set up a plan (in line with the
Board’s protocol) to assist the student in returning to normal
physical activity.
News From The Library!
February has already shaped up to be a BUSY month in the
library! With so many interesting events and celebrations
happening in our school community and the world at large,
there is no wonder! Students have been busily taking a keen
interest in inquiring about St. Valentine, the 100th Day of
School, Black History and the Winter Olympics. Books
have been flying out of the library on these hot topics!
Junior and Intermediate classes are paying particular interest
in the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi, and have been
down to the library to sharpen the research and web
browsing skills in order to find information on the Canadian
team and the events that will be held. As well, we as a
school, have subscribed to the Toronto Star (on-line and
hard copy) to receive the most up to date information! This
has definitely encouraged many students to take a keen
interest in reading and sharpening and exercising a variety
of literacy skills
