Lord, we thank you for making us life-long learners.
We have finished another year of education and we
thank you for all the opportunities you have given us
to expand our knowledge.
We thank you for our parents, teachers and clergy
from whom we learn.
This summer, help us to relax, to enjoy our families
and friends and to have fun.
Help us to remember to play safely;
Help us to learn from our summer experiences;
And most of all,
Help us to speak with You frequently especially when
we encounter You in Your wonderful creation.
Amen

SEPTEMBER 2013
The school office is closed until the week
of August 26, 2013.
Classes resume on Tuesday, September
3, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. Sts. Martha and
Mary will continue to have a 9:00 a.m.
start and a 3:30 p.m. dismissal time. A
copy of next year‟s calendar for holidays
and professional activity days has been
included in this newsletter. Keep this
document handy.
CLASS PLACEMENTS
Class lists for the year 2013-2014 are
extremely tentative. We have spent a
great deal of time organizing the class
lists to ensure the best possible
placement for your child and will
continue to fine tune them as the need
arises. All our class placements will
remain tentative until September
enrollment is finalized. Due to a number
of factors which impact enrolments,
parents are reminded that combined
classes are an increasing reality at Sts.
Martha and Mary.
Any concerns regarding class placements
can be addressed in writing to the office
and will be considered at the time of
school re-organization Professional
Activity Day, September 13, 2013.
School closed to students.
FE
LIFE
FOND FAREWELLS
It is hard to believe that the school year is quickly drawing to an
end. There is much more yet to be done; however, as principal, I would
like to take a moment to thank the wonderful staff of Sts. Martha and Mary
Catholic School for their support and dedication to our/your children this
past year. It has been a very busy year, filled with many happy moments
and success stories for your children. We all benefit from the gifts,
uniqueness and talents of every person we meet in some way, shape or
form. Unfortunately as the year comes to a close we must also prepare to
say goodbye to staff who is leaving Sts. Martha and Mary School including,
Ms. Perreault, Ms. Skrak, Mrs. Tannus and Educational Resource Worker,
Mrs. Godin.
With sadness we bid farewell to these individuals who will leave us
at the end of June. They have extended themselves greatly in the
classroom as well as involvement in a number of extra-curricular activities
outside of the classroom. .
We pray that all of our parting members enjoy continued personal
and professional success in all their endeavours. We feel blessed to have
had this time to work and/or teach with you.
TRANSPORTATION
It is time for the transportation department to get ready for next
September. Transportation eligibility is based on the student‟s grade
level and their distance from the school. At Sts. Martha and Mary
School, only students eligible for bussing, based on Board guidelines,
are able to take the bus.
As per Board policy, until routes are established, no consideration will
be made for empty seat riders. Parents of children from JK – grade 8
who hope to access the school bus through the courtesy seat policy next
year are reminded to find alternative transportation until the availability
for additional riders has been determined.
Please note that the schedule for our bus will be posted on the front
doors of the school the week before school starts. See STOPR
attached.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you will be moving from the Sts. Martha and Mary
Catholic community over the summer, please notify the
office. It is important that we are informed so that we can provide the
necessary transfer forms. You will require these forms as part of your
registration into any school in the province. Your child‟s Ontario
Student Record Folder is sent to his/her new school only after we have
had official documentation that states registration.
END OF THE YEAR MASS
Our end of the year Mass will be held on Tuesday June 18, 2013 at
10:15 a.m. in the school gymnasium. We are fortunate indeed to come
together as a Catholic community to celebrate our faith and express our
thanks to the heavenly Father for the many gifts bestowed upon us.
Parents are welcome to attend this celebration.
GRADUATION 2013
Congratulations to our GRADE 8 students on the occasion of their
graduation from elementary school. This is a momentous
accomplishment that marks the start of a new and exciting time in their
lives, but also the ending of what we hope was a successful and joyful
journey. We ask all members of our Sts.
Martha and Mary Catholic community to
say an extra prayer for our graduates this
year.
Creator, please bless these graduates,
and share with them Your wisdom and
strength. Please lead them on the right
path. Help them to remember that
whatever they do, whether in word or
deed, they must take action in the name
of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
the Father through Him. Amen.
We are privileged to have had the
opportunity to educate these future
leaders. Congratulations from the staff
and students of Sts. Martha and Mary
Catholic School.
SCHOOL RENOVATIONS
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board strives to create a safe,
caring,
healthy
and
inclusive
environment in all of its schools,
including Sts. Martha & Mary
Elementary School.
In order to maintain a safe and secure
learning and working environment for
students, staff and community members,
it is necessary to periodically undertake
construction and renovation work at our
schools. As you are aware, our school
will be offering the Full Day
Kindergarten program commencing in
September, 2013. In preparation for this
program, construction will be undertaken
to convert two (2) existing classrooms
into one (1) kindergarten classroom and
one (1) seminar room plus a retrofit to
two (2) existing kindergarten classrooms.
The work is scheduled to be carried out
during July and August, 2013, and it is
anticipated that construction and
renovations will be completed prior to
school opening in September, 2013.
These renovations will affect rooms 101,
102, 104 and 105. As result construction
crews will be on site and may require
addition work to our outside facilities.
Please ensure your children are aware of
this construction, particularly to avoid
any potential safety hazards.
It is the policy of the Board that during the construction and renovation
period, Board staff will ensure that all staff and contractors adhere to
provincial regulations including Ministry of Labour Health and Safety
regulations, as well as the Board‟s General Administrative Procedures
and Health and Safety Manual. It is my practice to keep students,
parents, guardians and staff informed of activities that relate to or
impact on our school. If you have any questions regarding the
construction project, please do not hesitate to contact me.
MILK BAG MATTRESS MOVEMENT
(submitted by: Mrs. Bellini-Kavals)
Thank you to all the students who have been faithfully bringing in milk
bags throughout the year. Many of our crocheters will continue working
on mattresses over the summer. Our faithful cutters have spent 2
recesses each week all year cutting the bags into strips and rolling them
into balls of plarn (plastic yarn). It has truly been a team effort, with
students from grades 4 to 8 cutting and crocheting. Thousands of milk
bags have been diverted from going to landfill and have been turned into
something useful for Haitians who still do not have dry place to sleep.
Our students have learned a new skill, practised recycling, made some
new friends and given the gift of time to help others in need. At this
time we have enough milk bags to keep us busy over the summer.
We hope to continue this project for the 2013-2014 school year. Thank
you once again for your support.

COLLECTION OF POP TABS
(submitted by Mrs. Monid)
It is my pleasure to inform you that as of
this month, 1487 wheelchairs have been
purchased with the money raised from
bringing in the pop tabs. Each tab has
made a difference to those people who
were not able to afford to purchase a
wheelchair on their own, and with your
assistance, they can now be more mobile.
Thank you for all your efforts and please
continue over the summer months to
collect the tabs and bring them back to
the school in September!
STUDENTS LEAVING FOR LUNCH
Please be advised that students require
signed parental permission to leave the
school during the lunch hour. Notes are
to be given to the teacher, who will then
send the students to the office to sign out.
Students will not be permitted to call
home if a note is forgotten. Students are
reminded that they must return to the
school prior to the 1:00 p.m. bell. Many
students leave the school to go to the
homes of nearby friends or fast food
restaurants. Please understand that these
students and their friends are
unsupervised at these times and are the
responsibility of the parent.
PEACE PALS (PLAYGROUND
ACTIVITY LEADERS) PROGRAM
Under the
direction of Mrs.
Yawney, some
phenomenal
Christian spirit
has been spread
throughout the
schoolyard of Sts.
Martha and Mary
School. This year, there were 13 Peace
Pals from grades 4, 5 and 6 who
provided support, organization and
modeling of fun, cooperative games for
our younger students during first recesses
throughout the year. To each participant,
thank you, for your dedication and
willingness to volunteer.
Peace Pals: Kayla, Kristyna, Kyle,
Johnathan, Nicole, Stephanie, Angelica,
Ashley, Ottavia, Krysta, MacKenzie,
Lara.
Peace Pals enjoyed a pizza and ice cream lunch on Tuesday, May 28,
2013, as a thank you from our school community for their peacekeeping services throughout the year.
PROMOTING CHR ISTIAN LEADERSHIP
Under the direction and supervision of Ms. DeSimone, Ms. Daly, Mrs.
Hammond and Mrs. Bellini-Kavals our skilled and organized student
leaders have met throughout the year and participated in a variety of
activities which promoted a fun, safe, Christian, and caring
environment. “Student Leaders” has been an extracurricular club at Sts.
Martha & Mary for six years. It is a place where our students are
provided with the opportunity to develop important life skills such as
communication, organization, teamwork, and responsibility. Above all,
it is a place where they are given the opportunity to make a positive
change whether in society or in our own school climate.
This year our grade 7 and 8 student leaders engaged in organizing a
number of student awareness and virtue assemblies and fundraising
events with a primary focus on ShareLife.
Some of the activities and fundraising events included: Mini We Day,
St. Vincent de Paul Society food drives, Shoe boxes for Samaritan
Purse, staff Christmas dress up, candy grams, earth week awareness and

BECAUSE WE'RE GIRLS NIGHT!
Being a teenage girl can be tough business. Simply because they are
girls, female teens are faced with a myriad of changes, challenges, and
pressures, often spending their teen years in a state of stress and
uncertainty. Therefore, in direct response to the School Climate survey
as part our Catholic School Learning Plan, to better prepare our teenage
girls for adolescence, Sts. Martha and Mary School hosted an evening
completely dedicated to girls. Here, 37 girls in Grades 7 and 8 had the
unique opportunity to learn about self-defense, self-esteem, aesthetics,
health, and more. It was a fun-filled and inspiring night empowering
teenage girls. Why? Because we're girls!
JK/SK MEMORIES GATHERING

WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE
We would like our students to be neat,
clean and comfortable for
learning. Students are
expected to dress in a
manner and attire suitable for
the occasion and appropriate
to the school environment.
Preferably boys should wear full-length
T-shirts with sleeves. Basketball shirts
or soccer shirts are allowed for gym
wear. Girls are not to wear anything
strapless or have bare midriffs. Spaghetti
straps, tank tops, crop tops and off the
shoulder tops are not acceptable. Shirts
with inappropriate messages or pictures
are not permitted at school.
Please ensure that shorts are of a modest
length (no short skirts, shorts or cut-off
jeans will be allowed). If students do
not adhere to these guidelines, parents
will be called and/or alternative attire
will be provided. We hope you will
assist us in maintaining a sense of dignity
with respect to the clothes that are worn
to school.
COLLECTING ALL BOOKS AND
TEAM
UNIFORMS
School textbooks
and team uniforms
are school property
and are “loaned” to
students annually. The expectation is
that these items will be returned at the
end of the FE
year. Please remind your child to “search” his or her room for
LIFE
any school
items and return them as soon as possible. Again, students
and/or parents may be held responsible for lost or damaged materials.
Report cards will be withheld at the office until the return or restitution
of loaned materials. Thank you for your help and cooperation in this
regard.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
A reminder that the elections for the Catholic School Council for Sts.
Martha and Mary Catholic School will be held in September.
Nomination forms for parent/guardian representatives will be available
in the main office of the school from September 3 – 24, 2013. Eligible
parent/guardians are encouraged to complete a nomination form and
become a parent/guardian representative. It is a great way to get to know
your school community better and make a difference! Electors must be
parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school and electors or
their spouses must be separate school supporters. Parents wishing to be
elected must be present at the September meeting. We encourage
everyone to come out and get involved in your child‟s education. Our
first School Council Meeting for the 2013-2014
school year will be Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at
7:00 p.m.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL
We would like to take a moment to thank our Catholic School Council
for their ongoing support and their initiation of the many worthwhile
activities and events that took place this year. Their support has proven
itself to be an enhancement of our goals and initiatives and we are
grateful for their insights, enthusiasm and child-centred approach to all
decision-making. Our School Council members have each enriched the
school by attending meetings and by organizing fundraising events that
have supported our school based initiatives i.e., „Scientists in the
School‟ presentations, literacy and instrumental music program
materials, sports equipment, Student Leaders t-shirts. School Council
has also generously recognized many milestones within our students‟
lives. Gifts are provided on behalf of the school community in
recognition of graduation and memento.
PROGRANT 2013 ACTIVE CHEF EVENT
What an exciting night was had by parents and students that attending
this great event, funded by the successful Parnet Reaching Out
(PRO)grant that School Council received. We will keep you apprised as
to what ideas Council is considering for application for the 2014 Pro
grant event for families.
PLAYDAY
On Wednesday June 19, 2013, School Council volunteers will be at the
school serving refreshments (BBQ hot dogs, water and freezies) to all
students. The rain date is set for Friday June 21, 2013.
GRADE 8 GRADUATION
The Grade 8 graduation will be held on Monday June 24, 2013. School
Council has been integral in providing funds and support to help make
Grade 8 graduation a memorable day to mark this most special occasion.
NEXT YEAR’S SCHOOL COUNCIL
It is not too early to mark your calendars
to consider attending Council‟s first
meeting of the 2013/2014 school year. It
is tentatively scheduled for Sept 24, 2013
at 7pm in the school library.
The continued participation of parents
that are involved in School Council over
the years has enabled your children to
benefit from the many worthwhile
activities, events and services that they
have generously volunteered their time to
support. Without School Council,
initiatives such as the instrumental
program, Mad Science presentations,
Grade 8 graduation festivities,
organization of the Open House BBQ,
Halloween dance and play day activities,
and the implementation of new
Smartboards in the school would not
have come to fruition this year. We very
much appreciate and need parents to
replace those who have done their part
for their childrens‟ school for years so
that these and future initiatives can
continue to be realized.
Most Council members have many other
responsibilities in their lives including
child rearing, full time employment, and
helping in the care of aging parents, yet
they still have the nominal amount of
time it takes to devote to this worthy
cause. As we look ahead to the coming
year, please consider joining a group of
caring, fun and dedicated parents who
run our Council! Joining is not the huge
time commitment you may have
imagined, and you can volunteer as much
or as little time as you have throughout
the year! The example you will set for
your children by actively engaging in
“their world” will strengthen family and
community bonds and is in keeping with
the spirit of Catholic education!
OPEN HOUSE BBQ 2013
Please stay tuned for details in
September, however, save the date of
September 26, 2013 for Open House/
BBQ. Again, School Council funds and
runs this event, and we are always
looking for volunteers who can help coordinate this popular and very well
attended evening.
NUTRITION NUGGETS
‘Nutrition Nuggets’ is written by Andrea Olynyk, Registered Dietitian and Professor of Nutrition
at the University of Guelph; Andrea is a School Council member devoted to promoting community
nutrition, and in particular, to educating children, young adults and parents on maintaining a
healthy lifestyle. „Nutrition Nuggets’ is provided as information for parents and not reflective of
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
Finally summer here!!! There is absolutely no better season for a
Dietitian than summer in Ontario! All of those local farmers‟ markets
and wholesome goodness fresh from the Niagara region fruit trees just a
nice afternoon‟s drive away is just plain exciting (or Is it just me ?)
Here are some tips to bolster your nutrition this summer:
1)
Make your own frozen fruit pops. Buy molds and sticks at a
crafts store. Puree your favourite fresh Ontario fruit, and freeze.
It's an easy yummy treat for a hot summer day. To keep them
from melting, you can make a batch of Jello (use the same
flavour as your fruit) and mix ½ of it into your fruit puree and
then freeze.
2) Frozen yogurt sounds healthier than ice cream but is often not!
You have to read food labels to ensure that the one you choose
doesn‟t actually have more sugar than low-fat ice cream. The
best idea is to make your own and adjust the sweetness
naturally. Adding fresh fruit and honey to greek yogurt and
freezing it on sticks is another great “hot day” treat. Or buy ice
molds (available in most department stores) and pour the
mixture to freeze in them. Then you can arrange the shapes
you‟ve made in bowls and decorate with mint, sprinkles or
berries.
3) How about frozen yogurt pie? Crunch up graham crackers (kids
love doing this), spoon frozen yogurt into it, top with fresh
strawberries or raspberries, then freeze.
4) Fruit and yogurt parfait, topped with granola, is another easy
dessert. Or, spoon frozen yogurt between two low-fat cookies.
You could also make a smoothie, using fresh blueberries,
grapes, and strawberries.
5) Waffles & Pancakes: This classic breakfast food is fun for kids
and not just for breakfast. It's the toppings that can boost the
nutrition: natural applesauce, blueberries, sliced banana and
strawberries, and a little light syrup or whipped cream.
6) Scrambled eggs mixed with low-fat shredded cheddar,
tomatoes, asparagus, mushrooms (or whatever veggies your
kids like). Or alternatively, scrambled-eggs-in-a-cup: Take a
slice of whole wheat bread, break it up into a cup, top with the
cooked egg mixture. You're good to go!
7) Marshmallows: Stuck on what to serve guests who have
multiple food allergies? Even kids with food allergies can eat
marshmallows! Give one to a child who can't eat a chocolate
chip cookie and you're sure to get a smile. Four large
EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
marshmallows have about 90
calories -- mostly sugar. To give
them a nutrition boost, try
skewering marshmallows with
strawberries and other fruit and
then roasting them! Grilled
bananas with marshmallows
melted in the centre are another
hit with kids. (Add a drizzle of
chocolate if you must!!)
8) Whole grains help keep kids
from gaining weight, and
popcorn qualifies as a whole
grain. The only problem is that
many brands of microwave
popcorn have tons of fat or salt.
Orville Reddenbacher‟s “Smart
Pop” is the healthiest choice. Or,
you can make your own
microwave popcorn by placing 3
tablespoons of kernels in a
brown bag, rolling it up, and
popping in the microwave until
popping sound stops (usually
approximately 2 min). Then
spray with Becel‟s
nonhydrogenated margarine
spray (fabulous stuff!) and add
Parmesan cheese or salt. That's
about 75 calories which is
approximately 25 calories less
than from packaged brands.
9) Watermelon: There's no doubt
that watermelon is good for kids
-- with its high concentration of
lycopene, an important diseasefighting antioxidant. Watermelon
is 92% water and 8% sugar, and
a favorite sweet treat for kids.
Make sure watermelon wedges
make it to your table. Sprinkling
the watermelon with lime juice
and mint increases the nutrition,
flavour, aroma, antioxidant
power and visual appeal of this
superfruit.
10) Edamame: Introduce kids to fun
new veggies this summer and
consider growing your own.
Edamame is fun to eat because
FEpop the little soy beans out of the pod. It's an engaging
you
LIFE
thing that most kids have never tried. Include edamame on raw
veggie platters, along with baby carrots, celery sticks, asparagus
tips, cherry tomatoes -- plus nutritious dips like hummus,
tzatziki, baba ganoush or chip dip.
It‟s been a pleasure writing Nutrition Nuggets again this
year. I wish everyone a safe and nutritious summer
filled with the season‟s best food offerings! See you in
September for another year of healthy tips! I encourage parents and
students alike to let any School Council member (including me) know
about a particular nutrition issue or question that you would like me to
address in next year‟s newsletters. Your opinions and questions mean
you are reading and learning something which is my goal in writing.

VISITS FROM OUR GRADUATES
It has often been the practice of former
Sts. Martha and Mary students to stop by
the school for a visit with siblings,
friends or former teachers. Although we
dearly love to see our graduates, it is
often at a time of the day when staff and
students are busy with school work.
Please assist us in reminding former students and our current graduating
class members that we look forward to visiting with them, however, we
must limit these visits to after 3:30 dismissal. We ask visitors to checkin at the office and receive a Visitor pass, and wait at the office until the
respective member is able to meet them.
PLAY DAY & BBQ DAY
Grades 1 – 8 Play Day is scheduled to take place on Wednesday June
19, beginning in the morning until about 11:50. Thank you to the
teachers for organizing the fun-filled activities. Under the supervision
of our intermediate teachers, the events will be facilitated by the grade 8
students and the respective teams will be lead by the grade 7 students.
Students will have the opportunity in the afternoon while indoors to
enjoy the company of friends while watching an age and theme
appropriate movie.
As is the tradition at Sts. Martha and Mary, our Catholic School Council
will sponsor a hotdog luncheon. Each student will receive a hotdog, a
bottle of water and a freezie as part of this special day. Thank you for
the numerous parent volunteers, facilitated by School Council, who
come to lend a helping hand with the preparations and distribution of the
BBQ items. Parent engagement, here at the school is truly evident.
STUDENT MONITORS
Mrs. Toteda, Ms. Dal Barco, Mrs. Horich, Ms. Noguerra, Mrs. Folk, and
Mrs. Daniele are the names behind the kind actions and attentive care
our children receive during their lunch hour at Sts. Martha and Mary
School. These individuals have endured many a cold, windy day in
support of the safety, security and attention to safe play that is a part of
your child‟s daily routine. We offer them our deepest appreciation for
the kindness and care they always share.
THIS IS YOUR COMMUNITY SCHOOL…not a public park
Sts. Martha and Mary is a community gathering place, as it
should be; however, the school and grounds are private
property of Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board. During school hours, this site is enjoyed by
many children, parents and visitors. Please note that
the school has posted three signs identifying school and board policies
with respect to facilities/gournds use. If during evenings or weekends
you happen to see anyone not respecting our school and its importance,
please notify the school or contact the police. Unfortunately many
believe our school playground and field is open access after school
hours and thus vandalism occurs from time to time. Our greatest
violator are people releasing dogs on the school field thinking it is a
leash-free zone and consequently dog excrement is left behind. Please
remember this is where your children go out to play during recess.
CITY OF MISSISSAUGA SIDEWALK/DRIVEWAY REPAIRS
As part of the City of Mississauga‟s maintenance repair program, the
City will be repairing the sidewalk and/or curb within the driveway to
some residences and school along Bough Beeches Blvd. Although no
specific date has been set, it is expected to commence in the near future.
All attempts will be made by the City and related contractors to make
the repairs affecting the school over a weekend or in the summer
months. Should this have an impact for you, with respect to parking,
please contact the Mississauga call centre
311 to inquire about “On Street Parking
Consideration”.

LOST LIBRARY BOOKS!
These last few weeks of June find the library even busier than ever. As we scour the shelves for lost books we have quickly become
aware of our diminishing resources. The school library is sending out an “all call” for unreturned items. Students have received
information through class lists and announcements. Any items not returned by Friday June 21, 2013, will be followed up with an
overdue letter. Please also look for text books as our school policy is that report cards will be withheld at the office until all items are
returned or payment for their replacement is made.
We are looking for many lost school books, even from the past and would appreciate families taking the time and making the effort to
look for lost treasures.
Look for summer reading programs too! Burnhamthorpe Branch Library, offers a Summer Reading Club. It is free for children to
join and kits can be picked up starting July. Remember, library cards are still free!

School Council Year End Report June 2013
It has been another busy year at Sts. Martha and Mary and as we all prepare to head off to a welcomed summer break, the
School Council of Sts. Martha and Mary gives a heart-felt thank you to the parents, staff and students for all their valuable
contributions, whether it was helping by volunteering in the school or donating to the school‟s fundraising efforts.
This year your School Council organized and implemented a number of activities during the school year with the
assistance of school staff and parent volunteers:

Where do the fundraising dollars go? Each year School Council has traditional items that they support including:
 Support to the intermediate grades‟ instrumental program

In consultation with the teachers, new initiatives this year included:
 Smart board purchases
 Support of “Girls night”
 Purchase of Student Leader T-shirts
In total, the school community was able to support $$30,093.37 in activities, events, equipment, athletic uniforms and the
like to augment the curriculum experiences for students. It is an amazing accomplishment and a testament to the school
community‟s generosity and commitment to our students and their achievement.
As we look ahead to the next school year, please consider coming out to the School Council meetings, even if you only
have time for one or two. It really does give you a better understanding of the workings of the school, the projects that are
happening throughout the year as well as developing an awareness of the role of the School Council supporting the
principal.
