MARTHA & MARY Catholic School 1760 Bough Beeches Blvd., Mississauga, Ontario L4W 2B9 905-624-9625 A Christmas Prayer O God, Whose mighty Son was born in Bethlehem those days long ago, lead us to that same poor place, where Mary laid her tiny Child. And as we look on in wonder and praise, make us welcome Him in all new life, see Him in the poor, and care for His handiwork, the earth, the sky and the sea. O God, bless us again in Your great love. We pray for this through Christ our Lord. Amen For Advent prayers and liturgies please visit: www.catholicsdoors.com FAITH LIFE A MONTH OF VIRTUES In December we celebrate the virtue of hope. We believe that God comes to us as a small fragile baby who shows us that even the smallest and poorest can make a profound difference in the world. God has given us this Advent season year after year in order to focus our minds and our hearts on the good all around us. During this time of hope, we are reminded that God chose to send his Son to us because we are worth it. God knows how great we can be when we all come together. When we look at the world through the eyes of God we know that the message of hope in Jesus‟ second coming will be and is fulfilled, because Jesus‟ love lives in us every day. People of Hope… Keep up a positive attitude Can bounce back from tough situations Set and stick to their goals See the good in others even when they make mistakes Work to include others Let others know that they are good people PRIMARY ADVENT CONCERT The students of the Primary Division wish to invite their parents/guardians, relatives and friends to an “Advent Concert” in the gymnasium at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday December 18, 2012. SCHOOL ADVENT MASS The Sts. Martha and Mary school community are invited to an Advent Mass on Tuesday, December 11, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Sts. Martha & Mary church, celebrated by Fr. Darrin Corkum. The offering of the mass provides an opportunity to celebrate the Eucharist together as a school and parish community. Please join us for a fellowship social hosted by School Council immediately following mass. CELEBRATING ADVENT The season of Advent begins with the fourth Sunday before Christmas. This year, the liturgical season of Advent begins Sunday, December 2, 2012. “Advent” is a Latin word meaning “the coming”. During the season of Advent, Christians across the world prepare for the celebration of the coming of the Lord into the world through the birth of His Son, Jesus Christ. Advent is a time to celebrate light in the midst of darkness, as symbolized best by the Advent Wreath. At Sts. Martha and Mary we emphasize the implications of the birth of our Saviour through our Christian actions. We ensure that Advent is a time where we emphasize charity and social justice. It is a time to prepare the way, to make God real each and every day through prayer, charity and social justice. The following activities provide a small window into how the staff and students at Sts. Martha and Mary are the arms, legs, and hands of God. YOUTH FAITH AMBASSADORS This initiative is to encourage Catholic elementary school students in the Intermediate grades to live out our baptismal call to become Fully Alive in the Lord Jesus Christ through care for themselves and others. The role of the Youth Ambassador is to become an active Christian through the knowledge of God‟s word, deepening their own faith development and bettering their communities through service. Here at the school, Youth Ambassadors are associated with our Student Leader program. Ms. Daly and 15 Intermediate student representatives attended a commissioning mass and celebration at Cristo Rei Church on Thursday, November 15, 2012, Rev. Carlos T. Macatangga, who presided over the mass. He defined the role of the Faith Ambassadors for the students and encouraged them to be role models of faith and of the virtues. He told the students that we should never compromise our faith to just “belong”, that we need to do what is right and not always what is popular. The students will share their experience as ambassadors throughout the year and create opportunities for becoming active witnesses in our school and community. BULLYING AWARENESS Bullying awareness week was acknowledged throughout all Dufferin-Peel CDSB school, November 19-23, 2012. Here at the school, in addition to the in-class activities facilitated by classroom teachers, intermediate Student Leaders, Jessica M., Matthew L. and Madison D., made a series of awareness announcements as part of the school opening exercises. Each day, the announcements looked at bullying from the perspectives of the bully, bystander and victim providing facts as well as suggestions how to deal with bullying situations. The motto, “If you fall down, you‟ve got to get back up again.”; simply stated, encouraged students to be persistent in their efforts to confront and handle situations brought on by a bully. The following Student Leaders suggestions are provided as reminder: To prevent cyber bullying… Defend the victim by talking to the bully on the internet, as with text message or facebook To prevent physical bullying… As bystander provide support for the victim, and seek adult help and avoid getting involved in the „fight‟ To prevent social bullying… If you hear people talking about the victim try to stop it as soon as possible To prevent verbal bullying… Go to the bully and tell them to stop, but do not put yourself in danger; or before the bully even does anything you can take the victim away before he or she gets their feeling hurt. A word of advice for all you people out there, “the bully bullies because he/she wants to impress a group of people, so that group of people gives them the attention they‟ll keep on doing it.” DON’T GIVE THE BULLY THE ATTENTION!!! REMINDER – APPROPRIATE USE OF SOCIAL MEDIA The impact of Social Media on our society, in the few short years since its introduction, has been significant in many ways. It is widely deployed whether as a means of advertising and marketing, entertainment, research, and interpersonal and public communication. In many ways, social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter have revolutionized interpersonal communication, to the point where it has displaced the telephone, email and even face to face dialogue among young people in particular. There are, however, pitfalls with a form of communications that, in effect, has no boundaries. Social Media communications that may be intended for a small group of friends or colleagues can instantly be flipped and transmitted to thousands, even millions of people. And, if the message is one that may be considered obscene, inappropriate, and libellous, in bad taste or threatening, regardless of the intent or context in which the original message was written, once it enters cyberspace, it cannot be pulled back. Disclosure of personal information can also open up the sender to safety concerns. The impact of this can be damaging to the sender and the discussion participants, and the damage could be lasting. Comments made on social media may be subject to legal action. They may haunt you years later when they turn up in an online search of your name by a prospective employer. They may result in disciplinary action being taken against you by your school. They may result in a visit by the police and criminal charges being laid. Commentary made on social media is not private and, is out there in the public domain. So, choose your words carefully, be a discerning user. Use the medium as a positive tool and avoid the pitfalls of inappropriate use of social media. PEACE PALS Many of our grade 4, 5 and 6 students have volunteered to act as Peace Pals to our younger students. Peace Pals are leaders within the school. They foster safe, fun, co-operative and active play during school recesses. Our staff representative, Ms. Yawney, has worked to provide training to these young individuals. Thank you Peace Pals for being such virtuous role models. BELOVED CUSTODIAN RETIRES We are happy to share with you that after serving the school community for 17 years, custodian, Mr. Alfred Criminale has retired effective November 30, 2012. We wish him well in his retirement and all future endeavours. SCHOOL COUNCIL CORNER NUTRITION NUGGETS: Candy in a Bottle: I am constantly asked by parents for my professional opinion on serving children juice and for some advice on which are the “best” juices. Sadly they don‟t usually like my answer as no juice product is equivalent in nutrition to its whole fruit counterpart. This month‟s Nutrition Nuggets uncovers some of the problems with the mass juice consumption that exists amongst children and grownups alike. There‟s a reason that most healthcare professionals refer to it as “liquid candy”. Here‟s why that opinion exists and why Health Canada and the Canadian Paediatric Society recommend that children drink no more than 125ml (1/2 cup) of juice per day: 1) Juice does not have any fibre in it at all. Even “lots of pulp” orange juice is devoid of fibre. Fibre is not only helpful in bowel regularity, but it also slows down the rush of sugar that enters your bloodstream when you drink juice. 2) Most juices are very high in sugar. A lot of people think that just because the juice is marked “100% fruit” that it is healthy. Although the 100% varieties are superior in that they don‟t contain white sugar or high fructose corn syrup, the fact is that the effect on the body of fruit sugar (fructose) versus white sugar (sucrose), brown sugar (sucrose) or high fructose corn syrup is the same. Sugar of ANY kind spikes your blood sugar and causes your pancreas to work harder to lower it. Fructose, which is the “natural” sugar contained in fruit, ends up as glucose as an energy source, just like every other sugar. 3) You may also be surprised to learn that the fruit and vegetables that make up juice (and applesauce and fruit cups for that matter) are allowed in Canada to contain up to 10% “mold, pest and fungus infested” produce as per the CFIA food manufacturing laws. 4) Remember that 4g of sugar = 1 tsp of sugar. Check your juice nutrition facts label to see how many teaspoons of sugar are contained in it per serving and also how big the servings are. Children up to age 10 should be consuming no more than 6tsp (24g) of sugar a day. Some juices have 24g in less than one serving! And again, just because the sugar comes from “juice” doesn‟t mean it is healthy for your waistline or your blood sugar. 5) The food industry plays some labeling tricks on consumers (legally) such as calling a juice “Blueberry Cherry Blend”, when in fact it has little of either fruit juice in it. An example is Minute Maid Natural Energy Pomegranate Berry Enhanced Juice, which actually consists of mostly water, pear juice and sugar dressed up to look like pomegranate and berry juices by adding only 1% of these fruit juices to the drink for colour. Read the ingredient list. 7) Finally, note that the latest research shows a strong correlation between overweight and juice consumption. If you are looking to shed some pounds, replace your daily juice with water and see the pounds come off! (This goes for all those fancy caramel/mocha/peppermint lattes as well.) To wean your children off of juice, try diluting it with water or sparkling water and limiting consumption to ½ cup a day. Offer water and milk instead. Children should be drinking 2 servings of milk a day for healthy bones and teeth and proper growth and development. ‘Nutrition Nuggets’ is written by Andrea Olynyk, Registered Dietitian and Professor of Nutrition at the University of Guelph; Andrea is a School Council member devoted to promoting community nutrition, and in particular, to educating children, young adults and parents on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. „Nutrition Nuggets’ is provided as information for parents and not reflective of Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. FUNDRAISING EFFORTS: The two major fundraising efforts that are the initiative of School Council are the Halloween Dance-a-thon and weekly “Pizza Days”. Fundraising efforts result in the betterment of our school by providing financial resources for ongoing and new educational programs and equipment, and for repairs and/or replacement of school supplies and equipment. This year, the proceeds from fundraising will be allocated to “wish list” items such as the purchase of Smart boards for the classrooms and upgrading classroom sound system equipment. Council appreciates every dollar that you spend in support of these fundraisers and strives to continue to make improvements at the school as a result of your generosity. CHRISTMAS GIFT TREE: To mark the beginning of advent, the Christmas gift tree was set up in the front foyer to be decorated with gift tags on November 26. Please help to celebrate the season of hope and giving by taking a tag from the tree and purchasing a gift for a child in need in our community. Recommended gifts include clothes, toys or gift certificates to local stores that are appropriate for infants children 9 years of age. Gifts should be left unwrapped, placed in a gift bag and delivered to the school by December 14, 2012. The Dixie Bloor Centre will distribute gifts to families in need in our community. This is a wonderful opportunity to bring excitement to a child on Christmas morning that may otherwise not experience this joy. HATS, SCARVES AND MITTENS Another way in which you can give to those less fortunate at this blessed time of year is to decorate our tree with new hats, scarves and mittens before December 14, 2012 These clothing items will also be delivered to the Dixie Bloor Centre and distributed to families in our community who are in need. If you are interested in bestowing a monetary gift, cash donations are also happily accepted. FAMILY ADVENT MASS AND SOCIAL: School Council is delighted to invite families to our annual advent mass at Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic Church on December 11, 2012 at 7p.m. This gathering is a wonderful way for families to celebrate joy and our connection to the community during this most important spiritual time of the year. All are invited to attend the refreshment social hosted by School Council that will follow the mass where goodies and beverages will be served. In an attempt to prepare for the event and ensure that we order enough refreshments, please make sure that you return the form that will be sent home with your children related to this event. SCHOOL COUNCIL MEETING MINUTES: The minutes from Council‟s meeting on November 20, 2012 are posted on the bulletin board located outside the school library. CATHOLIC COMMUNITY, CULTURE AND CARING MILK BAG MATTRESS MOVEMENT: Mrs. Bellini-Kavals and her group of student leaders would like to express their appreciation to everyone who sent in milk bags this past month to help support their Milk Bag Mattress Project for children in Haiti. Students will soon be meeting regularly during recesses to work on the mats. Several students will be busy crocheting and many others enthusiastically cutting the bags into strips. Remember that it takes anywhere from 500-600 milk bags to make one mattress, so please continue to collect and send in washed and dried outer milk bags. Last year, the students completed 12 milk bag mattresses that were sent to Haiti. Volunteers who went to Haiti report that tent cities in Jacmel have been removed, unfortunately though, not all of the inhabitants have been relocated to permanent homes; many are now living on the streets. The photo portrays a mat being given to a group of children CHRISTMAS SHOEBOX CAMPAIGN Thank you to everyone who supported our school‟s „Operation Christmas Child‟ shoebox campaign this year. We are proud to announce that through the generosity of classes, teachers, individual students and their families 105 shoeboxes were made and distributed to various third world countries through Samaritan‟s Purse. Our school community offers great support and thanks to our student leaders and to Ms. De Simone, Mrs. Hammond, Ms. Daly and Mrs. BelliniKavals for their contribution in supporting this very important event. CHRISTMAS FOOD DRIVE Through the support of our Student Leaders, we are hosting a food drive again this year. Non-perishable food items are being collected until Friday December 14, 2012. Boxes to collect these items can be found in front of the Kindergarten classrooms at the entrance of the school. Items collected as part of our Christmas food drive will be donated to St. Vincent de Paul society. Our fall collection was a tremendous success overwhelming the society volunteers who came to collect the food. Your generosity and message through action help the students better understand what it means to „give‟. JUNIOR GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL Junior girls‟ volleyball began with a quick start this season, coaches; Mrs. Hammond and Ms. Daly have been working with the team to develop skills at the Mississauga East family of schools games. For more ways to encourage your son/daughter to become active visit: www.participACTION.com INDOOR FOOTWEAR REQUESTED Please ensure that your child keeps a pair of running shoes or other appropriate footwear at school so that his/her feet remain dry and clean at all times. As well, because so many areas of our schoolyard can be quite muddy at certain times of the year, this would really help in keeping mud and dirt out of the classroom. SAFE ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE Thank you for your efforts in striving to ensure that our school is a safe environment during arrival and dismissal times. Overall, visitors to our school, driving vehicles onto the school grounds, follow the expectations to keep fluid movement of traffic. However, we would like to review a few items that require your attention so that the safety of children and visitors to our school is not being compromised. This is a reminder that the school Kiss & Ride service is only available from 8:45 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. During this time, teachers are on duty to support the safe arrival of students. They provide supervision of students exiting vehicles and entering the school property but are not able to open doors. If your child requires assistance to unbuckle his/her seatbelt and/or open a door, please consider parking along Bough Beeches Boulevard, just east of the exit driveway, rather than stopping in the drive through lanes. Please note that the area of Bough Beeches Boulevard directly in front of the school is designated as a “no parking zone” by the City of Mississauga. SAFE & HEALTHY SCHOOLS HEALTHY SCHOOL INITATIVES: Healthy School mandate is to promote a healthy lifestyle including activities and nutrition based upon Canada‟s food guide. As a means of promoting positive eating habits, our Healthy School initiatives includes encouraging students to bring fruits and/or vegetables in their lunches, and becoming more physically active every day. Is your son/daughter getting at least 60 minutes of activity per day? During the noon hour dismissal, 1:00 p.m. arrival times and at 3:30 p.m. dismissal, parents are welcome to access any available parking spots in front of the school; however extra caution is advised due to the high volume of traffic during these times. If there are no parking spots available in front of the school, parents are asked to park their vehicles on the street, just east of the school exit and walk their child to class. Cars should not be parked in the driveways in front of the school (Drive Thru, Kiss & Ride, Bus Loading/Designated Fire Route) at any time. As noted on the posted signage at the entrance of the school, vehicles parked in the driveway are parking in a designated Fire Route and can be towed. Your continued cooperation in supporting our school parking expectations is appreciated. BLESSING OF THE CHRISTMAS TREE Read from the Letter of Paul to Titus 3:47 from the Family Bible. Lord our God, We praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, and the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: He is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. Lord God, Let your blessing come upon us as we light this tree. May the light and cheer it gives be a sign of the joy that fills our hearts. May all who delight in this tree come to the knowledge and joy of salvation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. AMEN. [light the tree] BLESSING OF THE NATIVITY SCENE: Read from the Gospel of Luke 2:1-8 God of every nation and people, from the very beginning of creation you have made known your love: When our need for a Saviour was great you sent your Son to be born of the Virgin Mary. To our lives he brings joy and peace, justice, mercy, and love.
