As we enter into our summer…
May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be always at your back,
May the sun shine upon your face,
The rains fall soft upon your fields
And, until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

REPORT CARDS
Reports cards will be sent home with
students in grades senior kindergarten to
eight on Monday, June 28, 2010. Parents
and students may comment on the 3rd
page of the Ontario Report. Please return
the 3rd page by Tuesday, June 29, 2010.
Students who are not at school on or
prior to June the 28th will have their
report cards mailed to them.
SEPTEMBER 2010
The school office is closed until the week
of August 30, 2010.
Classes resume on Tuesday, September
the 7, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. Sts. Martha and
Mary will continue to have a 9:00 a.m.
start and a 3:30 p.m. dismissal time. A
copy of next year’s calendar for holidays
and professional activity days has been
included in this newsletter. Keep this
document handy.
CLASS PLACEMENTS
Class lists for the year 2010-2011 are
extremely tentative. We have spent a
great deal of time organizing the class
lists to ensure the best possible
placement for your child and will
continue to fine tune them as the need
arises. All our class placements will
remain tentative until September
enrollment is finalized. Due to a number
of factors which impact enrolments,
parents are reminded that combined
classes are an increasing reality at Sts.
Martha and Mary.
Any concerns regarding class placements
can be addressed in writing to the office
and will be considered at the time of
school re-organization in September.
FOND FAREWELLS
The last day for our students and staff is upon us. Mr. Carey and
Ms. Klein would like to take a moment to THANK the wonderful staff of
Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic School for their support and dedication to
our/your children this past year. It has been a challenging and very busy
year, but it has also been a year filled with many happy moments and
success stories for your children. We all benefit from the gifts, uniqueness
and talents of every person we meet in some way, shape or form.
Unfortunately as the year comes to a close we must also prepare to say
goodbye to staff who are leaving Sts. Martha and Mary: Ms. DeSimone
and Mrs. Flattery.
With sadness we bid farewell to Ms. DeSimone and Mrs.
Flattery who will leave us at the end of June. They have extended
themselves greatly in their planning and marking in the classroom as well
as involvement in activities outside of the classroom. Ms. DeSimone’s
work with the student leaders and coaching of various teams has greatly
enriched our school community. Also, her participation during School
Council meetings helped to support student programs. Mrs. Flattery’s
involvement in the Welcome to Kindergarten festivities and Volunteer
Appreciation gathering was greatly appreciated.
We wish Mrs. Tannus all the best as she begins her maternity
leave. With appreciation, we extend our gratitude for her involvement in
the Welcome to Kindergarten festivities, Rosary Club and Volunteer
Appreciation gathering this year.
We pray that Ms. DeSimone, Mrs. Flattery and Mrs. Tannus enjoy
continued personal and professional success in all their endeavours. We
feel blessed to have had this time to work with you.
TRANSPORTATION
It is time for the transportation department to get ready for next
September. Transportation eligibility is based on distance from the
school. At Sts. Martha and Mary School, only JK and SK students are
eligible for bussing.
As per Board policy, until routes are established, no consideration will
be made for empty seat riders. Parents of children from grades 1 – 8
who hope to access the school bus through the empty seat policy next
year are reminded to find alternative transportation until the availability
for additional riders has been determined.
Please note that the schedule for our bus will be posted on the front
doors of the school the week before school starts.
CONSTRUCTION NOTICE BOUCH BEECHES PARK:
As notified by the City of Mississauga, we are pleased to share with you
that the Bough Beeches Park redevelopment is well underway and is
anticipated to be completed by August 2010, weather permitting.
The park improvements will include the installation of new pathways
and pathway lighting, additional playground equipment, renovated
playing field, park benches and tree planting.
As requested by the city, your patience during the period of construction
is appreciated. During this time, the city asks for your assistance in
keeping children clear of the construction site.
For more information, contact Bill Montague, Project Coordinator, Park
Development, 905 615-3200 ext. 5097.
END OF THE YEAR MASS
Our end of the year Mass will be held on
Monday June 14th at 9:45 a.m. in the
school gymnasium. We are fortunate
indeed to come together as a Catholic
community to celebrate our faith and
express our thanks to the heavenly Father
for the many gifts bestowed upon us.
Parents are welcome to attend this
celebration.
GRADUATION 2010
Congratulations to our GRADE 8
students on the occasion of your
graduation from elementary school. This
is a momentous accomplishment that
marks the start of a new and exciting
time in your lives, but also the ending of
what we hope was a successful and
joyful journey. We ask all members of
our Sts. Martha and Mary Catholic
community to say an extra prayer for our
graduates this year.
Creator, please bless these graduates,
and share with them Your wisdom and
strength. Please lead them on the right
path. Help them to remember that
whatever they do, whether in word or
deed, they must take action in the name
of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God
the Father through Him. Amen.
We are privileged to have had the
opportunity to educate these future
leaders. Congratulations from the staff
and students of Sts. Martha and Mary
Catholic School.
ARE YOU MOVING?
If you will be moving
from the Sts. Martha and
Mary Catholic
community over the
summer, please notify the office. It is
important that we are informed so that
we can provide the necessary transfer
forms. You will require these forms as
part of your registration into any school
in the province. Your child’s Ontario
Student Record Folder is sent to his/her
new school only after we have had
official documentation that states
registration.
INTERNET SAFETY
As stated earlier, we are asking that parents be aware of
their children’s use of the computer. As you know,
many children are using FaceBook, Blogs and MSN. It
is important that as parents, you are informed as to
what your children are sending out and receiving.
Some of the communications are very inappropriate and do not foster
Christian relationships.
SUMMER SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION, GRADE 7 and 8
Summer school programs in literacy and numeracy are offered to grade
7 and 8 students who are referred by their teachers. Busing
to Metropolitan Andrei School can be accessed at the front
doors of Sts. Martha and Mary. Pick-up and drop-off times
will be available to students by the end of June and will be
posted at the front entrance of the school. Classes run from
8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. each day, July 5th to July 23rd.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL
We would like to take a moment to thank our Catholic
School Council for their ongoing support and their
initiation of the many worthwhile activities and events
that took place this year. Their support has proven itself
to be an enhancement of our goals and initiatives and we are grateful for
their insights, enthusiasm and child-centred approach to all decisionmaking. Our school council members have each enriched the school by
attending meetings and by organizing fundraising events that have
supported our school based initiatives: Mad Science presentations,
amplification systems for each class, literacy and instrumental music
program materials, media license and TV/DVD, sports equipment and
athletic uniforms. School council has also generously recognized many
milestones within our students’ lives. Gifts are provided on behalf of
the school community in recognition of graduation and First
Communion.
We would like to thank the Council’s retiring members for their
dedication and support over their many years of service. Special thanks
to Sally Jones –Clark, Cathy Cochrane, Teena McKeon, Maria Savaro
and Leslie Wrobel. Their volunteer efforts resulted in the organization
of the Halloween Dance-a-Thon, Pizza Days, Kiss and Ride, Grade 8
Graduation Mementos, Mitten Tree and executive Council positions,
just to name a few.
CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS
A reminder that the elections for the Catholic School Council for Sts.
Martha and Mary Catholic School will be held in September.
Nomination forms for parent/guardian representatives will be available
in the main office of the school from September 7 – 20, 2010. Eligible
parent/guardians are encouraged to complete a nomination form and
become a parent/guardian representative. It is a great way to get to know
your school community better and make a difference! Electors must be
parents or guardians of students enrolled in the school and electors or
their spouses must be separate school supporters. Parents wishing to be
elected must be present at the September meeting. We encourage
everyone to come out and get involved in your child’s education. Our
first School Council Meeting for the 2010/11 school year will be
Tuesday, September 21, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE
We would like our students to be neat,
clean and comfortable for learning.
Students are expected to dress in a
manner and attire suitable for the
occasion and appropriate to the school
environment.
Preferably boys should wear full-length
T-shirts with sleeves. Basketball shirts
or soccer shirts are allowed for gym
wear. Girls are not to wear anything
strapless or have bare midriffs. Spaghetti
straps, tank tops and crop tops are not
acceptable. Shirts with inappropriate
messages or pictures are not permitted at
school.
Please ensure that shorts are of a modest
length (no short skirts, shorts or cut-off
jeans will be allowed). If students do not
adhere to these guidelines, parents will
be called and/or alternative attire will be
provided. We hope you will assist us in
maintaining a sense of dignity with
respect to the clothes that are worn to
school.
PLAY DAY & BBQ DAY
Grades 1 – 8 Play Day will take place on
Wednesday June 16, beginning in the
morning until about 11:45. This event
promises to be a fun-filled, active day so
please ensure that your child has a
nutritious breakfast and snack. The
majority of our games are planned for
outdoors so children are reminded to
dress for the weather and the activity by
wearing running shoes, a hat and
sunscreen. Some of the stations may
involve water games; therefore a change
of clothing is recommended. The
afternoon will be spent indoors enjoying
the company of friends while watching
an age and theme appropriate movie.
As is the tradition at Sts. Martha and
Mary, our Catholic School Council will
sponsor a hotdog lunch on Play Day.
Each student will receive a hotdog, a
bottle of water and a freezie as part of
this special day.
Our thanks and gratitude goes out to each
volunteer and especially to Mr.
Christopoulos, Mrs. Wrobel and Ms.
McKeon for their efforts on behalf of our
students.
KINDERGARTEN PLAY DAY
The kindergarten Play Day will be held on Tuesday June 15th. More
information will become available through the classroom teachers.
ROSARY CLUB
Under the faithful leadership of Mrs. Knibbe, Mrs. Godin and Mrs.
Tannus, we were fortunate to honour our Blessed Mother Mary during
the month of May. Every Wednesday a large group of dedicated young
students met to pray the rosary offering prayerful intentions and
honouring Mary. Special thanks goes out to our Grade
six students, Kaitlynn P., Jessa C., Dana C. and
Madison F., who showed their leadership each week by
helping out our younger members of the Rosary Club.
PROMOTING CHRISTIAN LEADERSHIP
Under the direction and supervision of Ms. DeSimone, Ms. Duncan and
Mrs. Hammond our skilled and organized student leaders have met
throughout the year and participated in a variety of activities which
promoted a fun, safe, Christian, and caring environment. These students
promoted numerous food drives, faith activities, school dances
(including a new spring dance with great atmosphere), and spirit days,
which included our second successful “Vow of Silence”. In recognition
of their hard work and successful “Hope for Healthcare” fundraiser to
buy medical supplies for communities in Sierra Leone, Africa, the
Student Leader community was given the opportunity to bring guest
speaker Spencer West to our school to speak with the students. Spencer,
who is affiliated with “Me to We – Free the Children”, enlightened and
thanked our student for their enthusiasm and generosity.
The members of our 2009-2010 Student Leadership Team were:

SUMMER READ BOOK FAIR
Student Leaders wanted to share their “Me to
We Philosophy” with the community by
offering the third annual summer Book Fair.
Thank you to Ms. Pam Smith who ran and
organized the Book Fair along with the
assistance of School Council volunteers.
The Student Leaders thank the school community for their
generosity. Parents were invited to visit the book fair which ran until
Tuesday June 8th. All profits supported the school, the local community
and the global community.
“Love to Learn – Learn to Love.”
JUNIOR AND SENIOR
KINDERGARTEN CELEBRATION
A letter regarding a year-end celebration
of learning for our junior and senior
kindergarten students will be sent home
to parents of JK/SK children.
A DRAMATIC
MONTAGE
On Friday June 18,
from 10 a.m. – 2:30
p.m., the students and
community of Sts.
Martha & Mary School
are invited to attend the highly
anticipated production of “Wizard of
Oz” that is being performed by our
very own film and drama club with
vocal accompaniment by our grade
one students and the many students
involved in Ms. Medeiros’ clubs this
year: band, choir, dance, sketch,
photography, skipping and stomp.
As well, all classes will have
an opportunity to attend a variety of
dramatic performances, in the gym
during the month of June, by Ms.
Medeiros’ Arts classes. The
following provides a “sneak peak”
into the shows students will attend:
Funky Fairy Tales, Mini Moral Plays,
Salsa Routine, and Shakespeare. The
dates for these performances will be
announced by primary classroom
teachers. We look forward to
enjoying the dramatic talents of our
students!
COLLECTING ALL BOOKS AND
TEAM UNIFORMS
School textbooks and team uniforms are
school property and are “loaned” to
students annually. The expectation is
that these items will be returned at the
end of the year. Please remind your child
to “search” his or her room for any
school items and return them as soon as
possible. Again, students and/or parents
may be held responsible for lost or
damaged materials. Report cards will be
withheld at the office until the return or
restitution of loaned materials. Thank
you for your help and cooperation in this
regard.

SAFE SCHOOLS
VISITS FROM OUR GRADUATES
It has often been the practice of former
Sts. Martha and Mary students to stop by
the school for a visit with siblings,
friends or former teachers. Although we
dearly love to see our graduates, it is
often at a time of the day when staff and
students are busy with school work.
Please assist us in reminding former
students and our current graduating class
members that we look forward to visiting
with them, however, we must limit these
visits to after 3:30 dismissal. We ask
visitors to check-in at the office and
receive a Visitor pass, and wait at the
office until the respective member is able
to meet them.
NUT FREE SCHOOL
School can be a very frightening
environment for a child with a severe
allergy to peanut, nuts or nut products. In
an effort to further promote a safe and
secure environment for all of our
children we ask your support in
implementing a school-wide nut free/
peanut free school. Approximately 2% of
our school population suffers from this
life-threatening allergy. At first glance
this may appear as a small percentage
however, we must take into consideration
that these children are not isolated to any
particular grade level and, like all
students, utilize the computer lab,
washrooms, library and physical
education equipment. Please pay careful
consideration to school lunches and
snacks and refrain from sending in items
that are made of, or contain, nuts or
peanuts. We offer our heartfelt thanks for
your support.
THIS IS YOUR SCHOOL…
Sts. Martha and Mary is a community
gathering place, as it should be. Our site
is enjoyed by many children, parents and
visitors. If during evenings or weekends
you happen to see anyone not respecting
our school and its importance, please
notify the school or contact the police.
KISS N RIDE
Thank you to the many parents and volunteers that
have made the Kiss & Ride lane such a success. The
majority of parents access the Kiss & Ride drop-off
area and have aided in creating a safer environment
for all. Thank you to our parent volunteers,
especially, Mrs. Jones-Clark, Mr. Butler, and Mrs.
Brenzavich. They have braved the cold, wind, rain
and humidity to assist your children in arriving safely to school. The
program will continue to run in September 2010. Volunteers are needed
to assist with this program. If you are available to volunteer for 15
minutes a day please contact the school at 905-624-9625.
STUDENTS LEAVING FOR LUNCH
Please be advised that students require signed parental permission to
leave the school during the lunch hour. Notes are to be given to the
teacher, who will then send the students to the office to sign out.
Students will not be permitted to call home if a note is forgotten.
Students are reminded that they must return to the school prior to the
1:00 p.m. bell. Many students leave the school to go to the homes of
nearby friends or fast food restaurants. Please understand that these
students and their friends are unsupervised at these times and are the
responsibility of the parent.
LUNCH SUPERVISORS
Mrs. Edgar, Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Wrobel are the names behind the kind
actions and attentive care our children receive during their lunch hour at
Sts. Martha and Mary. These three ladies have endured many a cold,
windy day in support of the safety, security and attention to safe play
that is a part of your child’s daily routine. We offer them our deepest
thanks for the kindness and care they always share.

These last two weeks of June find the library even busier than ever. As we scour
the shelves for lost books we have quickly become aware of our diminishing
resources. The school library is sending out an “all call” for unreturned items.
Students have received information through class lists and announcements. Any
items not returned by Friday June 19, will be followed up with an overdue letter.
In order to jog those memories, some students will wear home a bracelet with a
reminder bead attached. We hope this will be a helpful reminder! Please also look
for text books as our school policy is that report cards will be withheld at the office
until all items are returned or payment for their replacement is made.
We are looking for many lost school books, even from the past and would
appreciate families taking the time and making the effort to look for lost treasures.
Look for summer reading programs too! Burnhamthorpe Branch Library often
offers the Summer Reading Club. It is free for children to join and kits can be
picked up starting July. Remember, library cards are still free!
