STUDENT
INFORMATION
SESSION
2013
A Ministry approved specialized program that allows
students to focus their learning on a specific economic
sector while meeting the requirements to graduate from
secondary school.
SHSMs assist students in the transition
from secondary school to:
 the Workplace
 Apprenticeships
 College
 University
• A SHSM is a specialized career-focused high school
program allowing students to prepare for a career
that matches their individual skills and interests
• As SHSM students work towards their high school
diploma, they obtain valuable work related skills,
knowledge and certifications recognized by the
health and wellness industry
Students completing all
SHSM requirements will
receive a Red Seal on their
Ontario Secondary School
Diploma
This designation is
recognized by employers,
colleges and universities.
For Instance:
 Guelph University will look
at a SHSM for admission
into their Agriculture
program
 Some students that have
attained a SHSM entering
Lakehead University, may
be entitled to a $500
award


The experiential learning opportunities provided in a
SHSM enable students to refine their skills and improve
their work habits, gain confidence in their ability to
succeed, and see the connections between their
studies, the real world, and their future careers.

Students are also able to begin to establish
relationships and networks in their chosen fields.
No matter which path you follow after high school, you will
have a better idea of your direction and future career
choice when graduating with a SHSM Red Seal.

Understand how and why your classes apply to your future
career

Obtain training and certifications from experienced industry
staff

Learn on the job skills during your co-op placement

Gain experience in your field of interest
