O Mary, my dear Mother, how much I love thee!

Thou dost teach me what I ought to know,
for thou teachest me what Jesus is to me

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK
Catholic Education week was May
3rd to May 8th. Catholic schools are
faith communities. We – parents,
students, teachers, administrative
and support staff – walk and grow
together in the faith which we
received at our Baptism. And it is
the ‘together’ that we grow. Our
growth is primarily a relationship
with God, who at our Baptism,
called us by name. The response of each of us to that
growth, is both personal and communal. We grow in our
faith in the nurturing atmosphere of our Catholic
community be that of our local parish, our home, or our
Catholic school community.
Our school community celebrated Catholic Education Week
2015 in ways that were appropriate to our students’ age.
We hope that you were able to join us and participate in
one of the many activities scheduled.
CONFIRMATION
Saturday, May 23, 2015: Sacrament of Confirmation at
5:00 p.m. at St. Edmund Campion Secondary School.
Congratulations to the grade 2’s for celebrating their first
communion on April 26 at Our Lady of Fatima Church.
CONFIRMATION CHANGE
Under Code 891 of the Code of Canon Law, Confirmation is
to be administrated at the age of discretion unless the
Bishops’ Conference has decided on a different age. The
Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops have decreed that,
in our rite, the sacrament of Confirmation shall be
conferred at an age determined by the diocese. The
Archdiocese of Toronto has notified us that the elementary
school grade for candidates for confirmation is to be moved
from Grade 8 to Grade 7, effective September 2015, in
terms of sacramental preparation. Local pastors have been
notified. This means that for the next school year
grade 7 and grade 8 students will be confirmed.
SAFE SCHOOLS INITIATIVES
ALLEGATION OF SEXUAL ABUSE REGARDING THE
LATE FR. JAMES (JIM) ROTH, OSFS
Information regarding an allegation of sexual abuse
of a minor related to the late Fr. James (Jim) Roth,
OSFS, is posted on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District
School Board’s main webpage at www.dpcdsb.org.
Additional information, including where to report
abuse or suspected abuse, is also posted on the
website of Father Roth’s religious order, the Oblates
of St. Francis de Sales, at www.tdprovince.org and
the Archdiocese of Toronto at www.archtoronto.org.
Please consult these sources as appropriate.
CONCUSSION POLICY, GUIDELINES AND PROTOCOL
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board has
developed a Concussion Policy and Guidelines for
students who have been diagnosed with a
concussion by either a medical doctor or nurse
practitioner.
School staff cannot diagnose a
concussion. Anytime a student reports to the office
with a head injury, the parent/guardian will be
contacted and the incident will be entered into the
school’s “Documentation of Head Injuries” log. Your
child will be given an information pamphlet entitled
“We want to give you a heads up…Concussions are
serious.” This pamphlet outlines the signs and
symptoms of concussions.
It also includes
information about what to do if you suspect your
child has a concussion and how a concussion is
treated.
Guidelines have been developed by
Dufferin-Peel CDSB to support a 10-phase “Return to
Activity” process following a diagnosed concussion.
These guidelines include 5 phases for “Return to
Learn” followed by 5 phases for “Return to Play”.
With parental consent, school administration will
work collaboratively with school psychology staff to
monitor your child’s progress through the 10 phases.
For more information, please contact your child’s
school.
ENTRANCE INTO THE SCHOOL PARKING LOT
In order to ensure the safe entry of children
onto our school property, students are
directed to enter the school property and
remain on the sidewalk as they proceed to
the school yard. Students will be directed to enter
the school yard/field (at the west entrance) and to
walk around the perimeter of the fenced school
parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our
students safe.
medication to be administered at school. Forms are
available at the school office. Please check expiry
dates on all medication.
FRIENDSHIP STRATEGIES
Parents can be helpful in
addressing
positive
behaviours that will allow
their child to build lasting
friendships.
Helping
children understand how to
treat one another and how
to value and make friends
are important, positive
steps in eliminating and isolating behaviours.
The Top Ten Ways To Keep Your Friends
1. Show them kindness and respect.
2. Stick up for them.
3. Be supportive when your friends need help and
advice.
4. Tell the truth but be kind about it.
5. If you hurt a friend, say you’re sorry.
6. If you make a promise, keep it.
7. Put some effort into your friendships; otherwise
your friends might feel neglected.
8. Don’t try to change your friends; accept them the
way they are.
9. If a friend hurts you and apologizes; accept the
apology.
10. Treat your friends the way you want them to treat
you.
LUNCH DROP OFF
For your convenience a lunch table has been set up in the
front foyer for lunches that are dropped off. For safety
purposes and to ensure that all our students have ample
time to enjoy their lunch, parents are asked to use the
labels provided to label their child’s lunch and leave it on
the table before 11:55 a.m.
If you are picking up your child for lunch, please meet them
at their regularly assigned exits. Thank you for your cooperation in maintaining a safe environment for all our
students.
MEDICATION
Please note that school staff cannot dispense
medication of any kind without the proper
authorization and a properly labeled container,
(i.e. prescription bottle or original over the
counter container).
Parents are responsible for ensuring that all medication and
forms are updated annually for any student who requires
MINIMIZING CLASS DISRUPTIONS
The instructional day begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.
until 3:30 p.m. daily followed by dismissal. In order
to not miss valuable instructional time, students
should not be picked up from school early, if
possible. By trying our best not to disturb classes,
except in very important situations, we are reducing
disruptions to teaching and learning time. We understand that there will be times when disruptions will
be necessary and unavoidable. To this end, we ask
the following:
 If you wish to discuss something with your
child’s teacher, we ask that you set up an
appointment with the teacher. Approaching
the teacher before, during and/or after
school makes it difficult for the teacher to
focus on her/his students. This also becomes
a safety issue. Please leave a message at the
school and the teacher will call you back.
 Send a note, in advance, to your child’s
teacher when your child needs to be picked
up early, who will pick them up and plan to
meet them in the office and sign them out.
We appreciate continued parental help and support
in minimizing disruptions to classes, whenever
possible.
PARKING AND KISS N’RIDE
Parents are asked to continue to use and follow the
Kiss N’ Ride procedures. The Kiss N’ Ride can be a
safe and effective way of allowing children to enter
and leave the school
grounds properly.
Please avoid making the
illegal left turn and
moving the pylons. This
area is closed off to
protect children walking
and for school buses.
ROUGH PLAY
While outside during recess students sometimes find
themselves engaging in inappropriate activities that
involve rough play. Pushing, shoving, tackling, play
fighting and wrestling are all unacceptable activities
that compromise student safety. Please reinforce
with your children the inherent dangers and
consequences of rough play, even when the intent is
fun.
SECURITY AT ST. LUCY SCHOOL
At St. Lucy School, we welcome parents and visitors to the
school. However, a reminder that all visitors, including
parents, must stop at the office before proceeding
anywhere else in the school, to sign-in and pick up an
identification badge. Anyone not wearing an identification
badge will be asked to return to the office. The procedure
will help students and staff recognize visitors to our school.
the context of the larger student group. In each
class, we strive for a balance of learning styles, a
balance of gender, a balance of learning needs, and a
cross-section of abilities. Any parental requests, as
to the teaching style preferred for their children,
are to be submitted to Mrs. Tollis in writing by May
15, 2015. Please note that combined classes will
continue to exist and are a part of every school.
SUPERVISION OF STUDENTS
Yard duty supervision by teachers occurs every day.
Supervision is in place in the mornings from 8:45 a.m. to
9:00 a.m., during all recesses, at lunch hour, and at 3:30
p.m. dismissal.
ECO- INTIATIVES
Mission Nutritionist
We have been promoting healthy nutrition since the
month of March. The Safe school team has some
great ideas for the entire school to get involved and
eat healthy. So don’t forget to bring healthy snacks
to school.
Walk to School
Walking to and from school allows children to be
more active and improves air quality and safety
around school. The Safe School Team has been
promoting walking to school. Please encourage your
child to walk every day.
Parents are reminded that students should not be dropped
off at the school before 8:45 a.m. in the mornings. The
school cannot assume responsibility for the safety of the
children before 8:45 a.m. Equally, after school each day,
students should be picked up at 3:30 p.m. promptly.
WARM WEATHER DRESS CODE
We would like our students to be neat,
clean and comfortable for learning.
Students are expected to dress in a manner
and attire suitable for the occasion, and
appropriate to our Catholic school
environment:
 Shorts should be an appropriate length
(bottom of shorts should not go above the child’s fingertips
when arms are at their sides)
 Cut off shorts are not appropriate
 Halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, low
cut tops, mesh shirts, muscle shirts, midriff tops
are NOT appropriate
 Sunscreen and a hat should be worn to school
If students do not adhere to these guidelines, parents may
be called and requested to provide suitable attire. We trust
you will assist us in maintaining a sense of dignity with
respect to the clothes that are worn to school.
SCHOOLS NEWS
CLASS PLACEMENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
Due to the “tentative” nature of our enrolment for
September, teacher assignments and grade placements
cannot be finalized until late August.
At the beginning of June the staff will be working on
drafting tentative class lists for the next school year. This is
a complex process, which takes into consideration not only
the needs of the individual child, but frames those needs in
EQAO DATES
The
EQAO
Assessment will
occur between
May 26 and
June 5, 2015. Grade 3 and 6 students are preparing
diligently for this assessment. It is very important
that all students are present at school during this
time. Please avoid making any appointments during
these dates.
MOVING?
If you are planning to move before
the upcoming school year begins in
September, please let the school
know by calling or visiting the office.
Your cooperation in this matter is
greatly appreciated as it will have an impact on class
placements for next year and to ensure updated
records.
ONLINE REPORTING TOOL
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School board
continues to promote a new way to help nurture a
safe, caring and inclusive school environment. The
Online Reporting Tool is intended for students in
grades 3 – 8 who become aware of bullying incidents
and negative behaviours within our school. The
student can ‘click’ on the link found on our school’s
website to fill out the report. The report will then be
directly emailed to the principal and/or vice principal and
will be dealt with accordingly.
Special thank you to Mr. Receno for coaching the
boys team and Mrs. Diuvenstyn, Mr. D’Agostino and
Mr. Lise for coaching the girls team.
It is important to recognize that the Online Reporting Tool is
an alternate reporting option. It is best practice to speak
directly with a responsible adult at home and/or in the
school.
