As you leave school for the summer
and you lay aside textbooks,
notebooks, pencils and pens,
Go with God,
for God goes with you.
As you begin new projects
or a well deserved family vacation,
as you meet and make new friends,
Go with God,
God will guide you.
As you enjoy the summer sun
and the summer’s cool blue waters,
be wise and safe.
Respect the beauty of the earth
as God’s gift to you,
Go with God,
for God has created you.
As you enjoy the peace and beauty
of your holiday
Go with God,
for God always goes with you.

Happy Father’s Day
Thank you, friend Jesus,
for my father who loves me,
for my grandfather who cares for me,
and for God, your father and mine,
who made me and is always with me.
How lucky I am!
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
As my first year as Principal at San Lorenzo Ruiz comes to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to thank
all the staff for their hard work and dedication. I have been very moved by the commitment staff members
show every day to the growth and wellbeing of the students in their care. In particular, I would like to thank
Ms. Sodhi for her energy, good humour and tireless work ethic. It has been a great first year!
To the grade eight students, congratulations on your achievements! We wish you well as you continue your
education in secondary school in September. Thank you for the gifts and joys which you have shared with
those of us here.
I would like to extend a sincere thank you to Monsignor Pan, and Father Joshua for their spiritual guidance,
celebration of our masses and participation in sacramental preparations of our students. We wish Fr Joshua all
the best as he leaves St Francis Xavier this summer.
To our parent volunteers , thank you for your tireless work to support many activities, including Kiss ‘n Ride, field
trips, fundraising, pizza days, etc. Your work allows us to offer enriched programs for our students. I would also
like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the parents on our School Council for their dedication, time, and
commitment to our school and our students. I have truly enjoyed working with everyone.
I would also like to thank our Superintendent, Mrs. Papaloni and our Trustee, Mr. Thomas for their continued
support and dedication to our school community.
Many thanks to our school secretaries, Ms. Hajdinjak and Ms. Walters for their continued hard work and dedication to our school. Thank you also to our custodians, Mr. Pizzorusso, Mrs. Lenhardt and Mr. So, for keeping
our school clean and tidy each and every day. We are also privileged to have an excellent relationship with
the Peel Police through our Neighbourhood Policing Unit. Thank-you to Officer Mooken for all his wonderful
help and support.
As we look ahead to next year, there are many exciting projects on the horizon. September will see San Lorenzo begin the era of “Bring Your Own Device” to school. If you have been considering whether or not to
purchase a Personal Electronic Device for your child, please consider that, as of September, these devices will
be permitted in classes for instructional use. Staff have been working hard to modify their course delivery to
make the most of this new tool. Several of our classes will be experimenting with a blended learning format
which makes use of an on-line classroom framework which should make course organization and communication better for students and parents. Another addition to our school will be a cart of 30 ipads which will be
made available for classroom use. Again, staff have been receiving training on how to best use these devices
and the corresponding apps for increased student engagement and achievement. Finally, it is our goal over
the summer to outfit our remaining homerooms with SmartBoards. It is our hope that this will create a standard
for technology in each homeroom and will position us as a school that is ready for the teaching and learning
needs of the 21st century.
On behalf of Ms. Sodhi, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all of you and your families. May the summer be a time of rest and renewal for you all. We look forward to seeing everyone back here in September for
another exciting year.
God Bless,
Michael Harrison

Congratulations to our Grade 4’s —
Read to Succeed Library Winners
Earlier in the year, the grade 4 students visited the local library and everyone left with a
library card and a good book or two. Many of our students returned to the library at
least 3 times since that visit making San Lorenzo the winning school for the Frank
McKechnie Library’s Grade 4 Read To Succeed Challenge. On Friday, June 5 th the grade
4 students are invited to spend the morning at Celebration Square to receive their
trophy, enjoy a presentation from the author, Eric Walters, and participate in a flash
mob song of “All About That Book” to be featured on the Jumbotron at Celebration
Square. Thank-you to Ms Debono and Ms Jenkins for your hard work!
Keep reading grade 4s!

indicated on the year end report cards.
Students/parents will be advised of their
child’s class placement on the first day of
school in September.

ONCE INSIDE, STUDENTS WILL MEET THEIR TEACHER AND
PROCEED TO THEIR CLASSROOM.
FULL DAY
KINDERGARTEN
In September, we continue with implementation of the
Kindergarten Full-Day Early Learning program. Senior
Kindergarten students will meet the teachers in the courtyard and classrooms on the first day of school - Tuesday,
September 8th at 8:15.
Junior Kindergarten children DO NOT attend school on
September 8th. Parents will be contacted by their child’s
teacher regarding their child’s specific start date. They are
scheduled to start school on a staggered basis during the
first week of the school year. JK’s are also reminded of our
“Lemonade Party” at 10:00 on September 3rd.
2015—2016 TRANSPORTATION (see last page)
Next school year’s bus schedule will be posted at the front
doors of the school the last week
of August. Check the Transportation website for the same information after the third week of
August.
Please verify your bus stop location prior to school start-up. All
students who are eligible to take the bus should be
waiting at bus stops 10 minutes prior to the scheduled bus
arrival time. Please be advised that it is a parental responsibility to ensure that kindergarten children are met at the
bus stop at the end of the day. Please tell the kindergarten
children that if they do not see a parent or babysitter they
are to remain on the bus and they will be returned to the
school to be picked up by a parent/babysitter.
NEW REGISTRATIONS FOR SEPTEMBER
The school will be open for new registrations from
Monday, August 31st to Friday, September 4th.
MOVING
If you are moving and your child(ren) will
not be attending San Lorenzo Ruiz School
in September, please advise our office as
soon as possible.
SCHOOL
BOOKS
Please take a few moments to check around your
home to see if there are any San Lorenzo Ruiz textbooks or library books. As you can appreciate, these
books are expensive to replace, especially during
these economic times. Please send any found books
to the school with your child. We thank you for your
help.
LOST AND FOUND
Many items have accumulated in
our school. Parents are welcome
to visit the school to check for
materials belonging to their
child(ren). They are in the Lost &
Found box in the front foyer.
Any items in the Lost and Found not claimed by June
26th will be donated to charity.
EPI-PEN AND MEDICINE PICKUP
We ask parents to pick up their child’s EPI-PEN or
other medication on the last day of school, Friday,
June 26th. Any medication left in the office will be
sent home with the student.
Sacrament of Confirmation
The Archdiocese of Toronto
has announced that the
Sacrament of Confirmation will
now be administered to
students in their Grade 7
year. Our local Pastors and
parish staff have been informed of the
change. For the school year 2015-2016, a
“double cohort” of students will prepare to
receive the Sacrament of Confirmation –
both the Grade 7 students, along with the
Grade 8s. Each parish will decide, based
on local circumstances, how best to handle
this in the 2015-2016 school year. For
some, it might mean a combined ceremony,
while for others, it will mean 2 separate ceremonies, perhaps with one in the fall and
the other in the spring. The local parishes
will communicate their plans to the
principals of the schools they serve. We will
be meeting with the parish in mid June to
plan.
Our schools will work in conjunction with the
Archdiocese of Toronto and the local
parishes to ensure that our students are
prepared for the Sacrament of Confirmation.
It is our continued hope that parish, family
and school will help our young people
prepare for full initiation into the Church.
With the Gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed
upon the confirmandi, they will be prepared
to assist with leadership positions within
their school, parish and greater community
during their last year/s of elementary school
and to aid in the transition to secondary
school.

INFORMATION FOR DPCDSB PARENTS REGARDINGSCHOOL START UP TRANSPORTATION PROCEDURES
FOR SEPTEMBER 2015
If your home address will be changing during the summer, please notify the office staff at your child’s school prior
to June 30. Address changes received after July 10 will not be reflected in the planned bus routes to commence
in September and may result in transportation services not being available for your child during the first weeks of
school. Parents will be responsible for their children getting to and from school until appropriate transportation
service is arranged.
The distance criteria for transportation eligibility must be more than:
1.0 kilometer Kindergarten and Grade 1
1.6 kilometers for Grades 2 – 4
2.0 kilometers for Grades 5 – 8
3.8 kilometers for Grades 9 – 12
If your child is moving to grade 1, grade 5, grade 7 or grade 9 in the 2015-2016 school year, their eligibility status
for transportation may be changing. Eligibility information can be accessed at the website noted below.
Parents who received letters in May of this year indicating that the transportation eligibility status for their children
is being revised due to eligibility reassessment are reminded that this change will occur effective September 1,
2015.
All transported kindergarten and grade 1 students are required to be met by a parent/caregiver when disembarking from their bus on their return trip from school.
Courtesy transportation, which is assignment of ineligible students to available, empty seats on buses, will not be
initiated prior to October 5. No exceptions.
Please be aware that during September and early October, STOPR priorities are eligible students requiring transportation service, bus overloads, and route timing adjustments.
Requests for additional or adjusted bus stop locations, route adjustments, and challenges to eligibility status will
not be addressed until late October.
Please be patient. STOPR provides transportation services for approximately 62,000 students to 350 schools on
1,300 buses. This is accomplished with an operations staff of 15. Every effort is made to complete required adjustments as quickly as possible, but there are limitations to the volume of changes which can be appropriately
communicated and implemented each week.
All transportation operations issues are the responsibility of STOPR and not either Board or individual Trustees.
