In September, we continue with implementation of the Kindergarten Full-Day
Early Learning program.
Senior Kindergarten students meet the
teachers in the courtyard and classrooms—if unable to find the classroom,
students may go to the front foyer and see

2014-2015 TRANSPORTATION
Next year’s bus schedule will be posted at
the front doors of the school the last week

eligible to take the bus should be waiting
at bus stops 5-10 minutes prior to the
scheduled bus arrival time.
Finally, please be advised that it is a parental responsibility to ensure that kindergarten children are met at the bus stop at the
end of the day. Please tell the kindergarten children that if they do not see a parent or babysitter they are to remain on the
bus and they will be returned to the school
to be picked up by a parent/babysitter.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING TRANSPORTATION ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENTS

Eligibility for transportation is determined
based on distance criteria established in
Board policy. For Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board, these are:

The purpose of this communication is to ensure that parents of students currently in
grade 1, grade 4 and grade 8 are aware that
transportation eligibility status for your child
may change next year as your child moves,
respectively, to grades 2, 5 and 9. As the
distance criteria increases at the noted
grade levels, students who are currently eligible for transportation in grades 1, 4 and 8,
may no longer be eligible for transportation
when they move to the next grade level.
Effective June 1, transportation eligibility
information for 2014-2015 will be available
on our website. To confirm the transportation eligibility status for your child for the
2014-2015 school year, please access our
website at www.stopr.ca. Access the “Am I
Eligible for Transportation?” icon, select
2014-2015 and enter the required address,
2014-2015 grade level, and program information to obtain the transportation eligibility status for your child.
This notification is provided to advise parents of a potential change in transportation

GRADE 7 & 8 SUMMER SCHOOL
For those students already registered,
summer school will run from July 2nd to
July 18th from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Schedules for transportation will be posted
on the front door of the school.

If you are moving and your children will
not be attending San Lorenzo Ruiz School
in September, please advise our office as

Please take a few moments to check
around your home to see if there are any
San Lorenzo Ruiz textbooks or library
books. As you can appreciate, these books
are expensive to replace, especially during
these economic times. Please send any
found books to the school with your child.

The Before School Program begins at
7:30 a.m. until school start. The After
School Program runs from the end of the
school day until 6:00 p.m. Children participate in recreational activities, are

EPI-PEN AND MEDICINE PICKUP
We ask parents to pick up their child’s EPIPEN or other medication on the last day of
school, Friday, June 27, 2014. Any medication left in the office will be sent home with
the student.

home on Wednesday, June 25th. Please return a signed copy of Page 3 to the school.

CRIMINAL REFERENCE
CHECKS/DECLARATION FORMS
In keeping with the Safe Schools Act, all
volunteers must have a Criminal Reference
Check. If you have the time to be a volunteer, please contact the office for a criminal reference check form for the 20142015 school year. The form must be
signed by the principal before it is submitted to Peel Regional Police Headquarters, 7750 Hurontario Street, Brampton,
Ontario. The check is free for volunteers.

GRADUATION
The grade 8 students will be celebrating
their Grad Liturgy on Wednesday, June
25th at 3:30 p.m. in the school gymnasium
followed by Awards Ceremony. Their Grad
Luncheon and dance will be on Thursday,
June 26th at Boaden Catering from 11:30
a.m. to 3:00 p.m. More information will
follow.

Our Catholic School Heritage
The next installment in understanding our Catholic Schools
heritage:
11. Once section 93(1) was enacted, why did Ontario’s
separate school supporters continue to suffer financial
hardship?
The Separate School (Scott) Act of 1863 did not anticipate
the creation and/or growth of corporations and public utilities in Ontario, or the creation of public high schools. These
two omissions caused over 100 years of financial hardship
and inequity for separate school supporters.
12. Why did Catholic parents and students have to pay
tuition to attend a Catholic high school after grade ten?
In 1871 the Ontario government passed an Act. This Act
abolished common and grammar schools and created public schools for grades one to ten and high schools for
grades nine to thirteen. The highest official with the Department of Education, Egerton Ryerson, commented that
the 1871 Act did not affect separate schools. The separate
school boards operating secondary school classes carried
on, receiving funding from grants and taxes. However, early in the twentieth century the government passed legislation which forbade a separate school board from offering
education beyond grade ten if its boundaries fell partially
or fully within the boundaries of a high school district.
Thus, all but one separate school board (in Dublin) lost
their ability to receive tax or government grant financing
beyond grade ten.
13. How did Catholic high schools survive?
Catholic parents and students paid tuition after grade ten.
Parental groups raised money from draws, lotteries and
school events. Parish priests contributed money from their
Sunday collections. Many separate school boards, including
Dufferin-Peel, opened intermediate-division (i.e. grades
seven-to-ten) schools. With the vital assistance of the religious teaching Orders, the diocese continued to operate
private Catholic high schools and opened new ones.

14. How was the Catholic high school issue resolved?
In 1984, Premier William Davis, edified by the commitment to Catholic high schools of the Catholic community
and convinced of the injustice of truncated separate
schools, announced that the government would be completing the separate school system to the end of high
school. The Supreme Court of Canada unanimously responded to a court challenge against the ensuing legislation by asserting that separate schools before Confederation were operating secondary school education with
funding from taxes and government grants and, therefore, section 93(1) of the Canadian Constitution guaranteed the right of separate school boards to administer
from junior kindergarten to the end of high school. After
almost sixty years of financial sacrifice by the Catholic
community, Catholic high schools once more became an
equal partner in Ontario’s publicly funded school system.15. Catholic separate schools had a second obstacle
to their survival. How serious a problem for separate
school boards was the corporation tax issue?
This was very serious. As corporations like the Ford Motor Co., Inco, the Royal Bank of Canada and thousands of
others came on the scene, and as public utilities like the
Ontario Hydro and the Canadian National Railway were
created, they could not pay separate school property
taxes. Thus the assessment of urban public school boards
became wealthier and wealthier, while separate school
boards received taxes from only Catholic home and property owners and from fully or partially owned small businesses. By the 1920s urban separate school boards were
operating with about one-quarter to one-fifth of the revenues of their urban public schools boards.
16. How did separate school boards survive without
corporation tax revenues?
The separate school trustees controlled the boards’
budgets with more pupils per classroom than in the public schools, with much lower wages, with small playgrounds, and with minimum expenditures for the erection of new schools. The main contribution for the survival of separate schools came from the religious teaching Orders. They supplied principals and teachers and
worked for salaries of $300 to $600 a year when public
school teachers were earning $3,000 and up.
