In confidence, we ask these things Through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Saviour. Amen. A Person of Love… Wants the best for others Is willing to make sacrifices for the good of others Learns from the heroic lives of saints & holy people Knows that we are all lovable Prays for others T. Thomas (905) 890-1221 Superintendent L. Papaloni School Council Chair Silvia Rinaldi Attendance Verification Line (905) 501-0400 Press #1 God has given us many examples of how to live faithfully. He sent his Son Jesus to make sure that we could see how we should live our lives. Jesus made one lesson clear above all other lessons – the lesson to love. Love is not about us – it is about forgetting ourselves and looking out for the good of the other. He chose to give up His life for the good of others – for us! Becoming a truly loving person is challenging. It takes prayer and concentration to get used to making little sacrifices for the good of others. Through prayer and concentration, we can get better at showing love to everyone we meet. WELCOME! We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new assistant secretary Karen Romani. LENTEN MASS GRADE 2 FIRST HOLY COMMUNION On March 27th, our school celebrated Lenten Mass with St. Hilary School at St. Francis Xavier Church. The Grade 2 students of San Lorenzo Ruiz will celebrate the sacrament of First Holy Communion at 10:00AM on Saturday May 3rd at St. Francis Xavier Church. CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK Catholic Education Week is scheduled for the week of May 4 – May 9, 2014. This year's theme is "Serving in the Love of Christ”. The scriptural passage that guides our theme is: ‘I am among you as one who serves.’ (Luke 22:27e) This year’s five sub-themes, one for each of the five days of Catholic Education Week, help students to understand the rich meaning of this year’s theme: San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic School Monday: Serve with faithfulness Tuesday: Serve with humility Wednesday: Serve with compassion Thursday: Serve with justice Friday: Serve with joy Catholic Education Week begins on a Sunday to highlight the partnership that remains the foundation of Catholic education between our Catholic schools and local Catholic parishes. Throughout Catholic Education Week, we ask you to reflect on the significance of Catholic education’s presence and contribution in our Church, and in our society. We invite all members of our community, to participate in the celebrations and activities that will mark the celebration of Catholic Education Week 2014 in our schools. YOUTH FAITH AMBASADORS The faith of students and staff at San Lorenzo Ruiz Elementary School has been witnessed during the season of Lent. In addition to composing and leading virtues -themed songs , prayer and reflection activities for a group of younger students within the school, the Youth Faith Ambassadors' Team felt a calling to do charitable work during the holy season of Lent. This dedicated group of grade 6-8 students have been busy collecting toiletry items for Dr. Simone's Warehouse: Canadian Food For Children, a charitable organization. They are ask- ing for donations of bar soap, toothbrushes, and toothpaste which will be donated during Holy Week. Volume 1, Issue 8 "In the poor and outcast we see Christ's face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ." Page 3 April 20th EASTER April 21st Easter Monday School Closed Our Catholic School Heritage The next installment in understanding our Catholic Schools heritage: 7. Were these four obstacles removed (see #6 in January’s newsletter!)? Yes. The United Legislature of Canada East and Canada West in 1853, 1855 and 1863 removed all four hindrances. There was no more double taxation. It did not matter if there was a Catholic teaching in the common school. The separate school board did not need the permission of the common school board to open a new or additional separate school. The number of Catholic heads of family to establish a separate school was lowered from twelve to five. As a result, the number of separate schools grew considerably. 8. What effect did the Canadian Constitution, create in the British North America Act (1867) (now entitled either the Constitution Act or the Canada Act), have on separate schools? When the Fathers of Confederation came from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Canada East, and Canada West to meet in Charlottetown and Quebec, they quickly concluded, in the words of one of the Fathers, Sir Charles Tupper, that “Without this guarantee for the rights of minorities being embodied in that new constitution, we should have been unable to obtain any Confederation whatever.” Page 4 GREEN TEAM NEWS April is a busy time for the San Lorenzo Green team. Not only are we going to celebrate Earth Day we are continuing to recycle, compost and bring wasteless lunches on Wednesdays as a school community. For the remainder of the year, our school has launched a "Ban The Bottle" campaign. We have noticed that many of our students are using plastic water bottles to stay hydrated. As a whole school we are taking steps towards banning plastic water bottles, and advocating the use of reusable water bottles that can be washed and refilled on a regular basis. As a school community, we are encouraging students to be active participants in making "right" environmental choices. A reminder that the SLR School Council will be selling passports for Carassauga's Festival of Cultures. Adult passports will be sold for $10.00 each (each passport sold will generate $5.00 in fundraising for SLR). Passports will be sold during the School Spring Production on Wednesday May 7th and Thursday May 8th before and after the performances. If you can not attend on these nights and wish to purchase tickets, please contact the school office. Carassauga will take place on May 23, 24, and 25, 2014. This year's Carassauga will feature 72 countries, 30 Pavilions and 13 locations across Mississauga. This is a great way to support your school, your community and your cultural background! San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic School REMINDER OF THE KISS & RIDE PROCESS There are 3 lanes , each with a designated purpose. LANE 1: is closest to the school building and is the Bus Lane. This lane should be used by the school buses only either dropping off or picking up students. No cars in this lane please. LANE 2: is the middle lane and is the lane parents or guardians use to drive in to drop off or pick up their child. Drivers are asked to stop beside the parent volunteer at the east end of the parking lot. Students should exit from the passenger side of the vehicle only. The vehicle door will be opened from the out- side by a parent volunteer. LANE 3: is closest to the street and is a drive through lane. Students should not be exiting from their vehicles from this lane as other drivers are not anticipating this unsafe behaviour. Please continue to use the Kiss and Ride Lane to drop off and pick up your children. Also, please do not drop off your child in the staff parking lot. Thank you for your assistance and co-operation. A huge thank you to our volunteers who have braved the cold weather this winter to keep our students safe! We are in the process of planning classes and staffing for the 2014-2015 school year. If you are moving, we would appreciate if you would let us know. Contact the office at 905-501-0400. CREATING CLASSES FOR SEPTEMBER 2014 Class formation is a complex procedure, which takes into consideration not only the needs of the individual child, but frames those needs in the context of the larger classroom group. In each class we strive for a balance of learning styles, a balance of gender, a balance of learning needs and a cross-section of abilities. The current teachers, support staff and administration take part in the process. If you as a parent wish to provide input into the process, please take into consideration the following guidelines: Input must be made in writing to the Principal no later than April 30, 2014. Frame requests in terms of educational contexts, e.g. your child’s learning needs/style; information not already known to the school; best learning environment. Please do not make requests for specific teachers as staffing is always tentative and changes can take place between now and September. for Catholic education. We want to bring a greater awareness around this matter and have created the Are You Ticked? campaign as the communication vehicle for this awareness. If you would like more information on school support designation or would like us to help you check or change your school support designation to the Catholic system, please call us at (905) 890-0708, ext. 24512. CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS/DECLARATION FORMS In keeping with the Safe Schools Act, all volunteers must have a Criminal Reference Check. If you have the time and desire to be a volunteer, helping our students in any capacity, please contact the office for a criminal reference check form for the 2013-2014 school year. The form must be signed by the principal before it is submitted to Peel Regional Police Headquarters, 7750 Hurontario Street Brampton Ontario. The check is free for volunteers. If you already have a Criminal Reference Check on file at the school, please complete the Criminal Offence Declaration form. Please have your check or declaration completed so you can continue to enrich our students’ school experience. Once you receive your criminal check, please submit it to the office. STUDENT SUPERVISION TIMES Teachers are on supervision duty 15 minutes before the start of the school day. We ask that your child not arrive at the school prior to 8:00 a.m. as supervision is not available until that time. Also, please ensure that your child is picked up promptly at 2:45 p.m. when the bell rings at the end of the day. ARE YOU TICKED? Direction of school support has long been an issue for Catholic school boards in Ontario. The fact is that, unless the municipality is notified, the school support designation, for assessment purposes, automatically defaults to public school support when an individual or family moves to a new address. This may have an impact on students’ eligibility to attend Catholic elementary schools, trustee representation on school boards, and on government perception of support Volume 7 Web Resources: Primary: Pizza Game www.mrnussbaum.com Junior: Flitting with fractions www.mathfrog.ca Intermediate: Fraction Café www.wiredmath.ca Fractions Learning about fractions extends students’ understanding of our number system. While whole numbers represent quantities of whole units, fractions signify parts of whole units or parts of sets. Although fractions are all around us, learning about fractions is difficult for some students. Identifying fractions in our environments makes them meaningful and easier to visualize. Family Math Activities Ordering a Pizza? Make it a family math activity. Before you take that first bite, have your child count how many slices the pizza is “equally divided” into. Ask questions like: How many people are eating? How can we share the pizza fairly? How many slices would someone eat if they wanted half, quarter, the whole pizza. Extend the learning for an older child by comparing the size of the slices of pizza cut into fewer or more slices. For example, a pizza cut into 6 slices can be cut into 12 slices. We can compare one sixth to two twelfths…what do we notice? Bake or cook together Make a third, fourth or half of a simple recipe or try doubling it Ask your child to show you a third, fourth or half of a cookie Cut an apple into thirds, fourths/ halves and have your child put the apple back together to make a whole Predict the number of red Smarties in a box. Count the number of red Smarties and compare it to the whole (total number of Smarties). Repeat with various colours. Count the number of people in your family with brown eyes and compare to the whole (total number of people in family). Repeat with various other features (hair, glasses…) Grades 7 and 8 CLIPS CLIPS (Critical Learning Instructional Paths Supports) are web-based interactive supports for students. They provide precise, personalized learning activities for your children. http://oame.on.ca/CLIPS/ Elementary Program Team 2012 Keaton Centre, 5685 Keaton Crescent, Mississauga, Ontario L5R 3H5 Phone: 905 890‐6000 Fax: 905 890‐6330 1 800‐668‐1140 IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING TRANSPORTATION ELIGIBILITY FOR STUDENTS CURRENTLY IN GRADES 1, 4 AND 8 Eligibility for transportation is determined based on distance criteria established in Board policy.
