THE VIRTUE OF CONSCIENCE
LUNCH
TIME
If you are taking
your child out for
lunch, please be
aware that you or
your designate must
come in to the
front foyer to meet
the child.
Children cannot wait
outside for pickup.
Students must be
signed out and
into school via the
binder in the main
office if entry or exit
times are different
from regular school
hours.
In the month of November, we celebrate the virtue of Conscience. People of Conscience recognize and acknowledge the voice of God within. When we follow our conscience we make
decisions that encourage and support truly loving relationships. Sometimes these decisions
are not easy to make. We accept accountability for our own actions and make decision according to gospel values when we use our conscience and choose to be good.

2013 Annual Spook-a-thon
On Thursday, October 31, the SLR School Community came together once again to celebrate
the Annual Spook-a-thon! A fun time was had by the students, staff and many parents. It

tremendous school spirit by collecting pledges from EXTREMELY generous supporters.
In total, $9,369.41 was collected!
The annual Spook-a-thon is only possible because of the efforts of many people. The SLR

Are You Ticked?
Direction of school
support (taxes) has
long been an issue
for Catholic school
boards in Ontario.
The fact is that,
unless the
municipality is
notified, the school
support designation,
for assessment
purposes,
automatically
defaults to public
school support when
an individual or
family moves to a
new address. This
may have an impact
on students’
eligibility to attend
Catholic elementary
schools, trustee
representation on
school boards and
on government
perception of
support for Catholic
education. We want
to bring a greater
awareness around
this matter and have
created the Are You
Ticked? Campaign
as the
communication
vehicle for this
awareness. If you
would like more
information on
school support
designation or would
like us to help you
check or change
your school support
designation to the
Catholic system,
please call (905) 890
-0708 ext. 24512.
ELEMENTARY PROGRESS REPORTS
Elementary Progress reports (Gr. 1-8) were
sent home on Tuesday, November 5th. The
Elementary Progress Report is designed to
show a student’s development of learning
skills and work habits during the fall of this
school year, as well as a student’s general
progress in working towards the achievement of curriculum expectations in all subjects. The Progress Report is not a formal
report card. Students will not be receiving
letter grades indicating achievement of overall expectations. As a result, an interview
with parents is not mandatory during the
Progress Report period.
First term report cards will be sent home on
Feb. 4th and first term interviews will take
place on Feb. 6th and 7th. It is expected
that all students will be participating in the
interview process at that point.
GREEN TEAM UPDATE
Lunches that contain single use cartons and
prepackaged snack foods leave behind plastic, cardboard, foil and other wasteful wrappers that often end up in landfills. Our
school will be beginning wasteless lunch
Wednesdays that will continue throughout
the year. This initiative helps teach our children, the stewards of tomorrow, that taking
care of the environment is very important. San Lorenzo Ruiz school is an Ontario EcoSchool and we also recycle, compost and monitor the use of lights and electricity. Thank you for your participation in
Wasteless Lunches!
Page 4
Another Green team, whole school and
board initiative will be encouraging students
to walk, roller blade, scooter, skateboard or
jog to school. Our kiss and ride, and parking
lot have many idling cars in the mornings
and after school. Students are encouraged
to use other methods, to help cut down on
air pollution around our community. More
information will follow.
JUNIOR GIRLS VOLLEYBALL TEAM
We are so proud of our girls this year: Gillian, Sophia, Alexa, Martyna, Rachel, Thea,
Maya, Joanna, Chiara and Victoria. They
worked hard and tremendously improved
during our season. On October 17, 2013,
they won their first tournament against St.
Jude, St. Hilary and St. Gertrude. As a result,
they continued on to the Family tournament on October 24, 2013. Here they
fought hard, learned perseverance and controlled the ball even better than previous
games. Their successes during the day led
them to the Semi-finals. And so, they enthusiastically but nervously played against St.
Veronica’s team. This team certainly presented a challenge. The girls lost their first
set but won the second. This excruciating
tie, forced both teams to complete a third
and final set. The winner of this set would
go on to the Finals and hopefully make it to
the Board’s tournament. Unfortunately, SLR
lost in the final set. It was a heartbreaking
experience as the girls worked extremely
hard under immense pressure. All the
coaches, Mrs. Duliunas, Miss Maiorana and
Mme. McCallen, staff and students are very
proud of the team. We wish all teams good
luck at the Board finals. But, we aren’t done
yet. We’ll be back next year!!

LATE ARRIVALS
It is important that your children arrive at school on
time. Late arrivals have a direct impact on learning in
school and they also disrupt the classroom teacher during lessons.
Your assistance is appreciated in supporting your child’s
learning by reinforcing that punctuality is an important
responsibility that should be developed not only for success in school, but later in life as well.

LUNCH POLICY
We have a large number of students eating
lunch at school and often children need to
be reminded of proper behavior while
eating. We ask for the parent’s cooperation in reinforcing with your child(ren) appropriate lunchtime behavior. Students
are expected to:
 Remain seated while eating
 Not to share food (Sabrina’s Law Policy
re: allergies)
 Chat quietly with classmates
 Dispose of all garbage and clean up
desk and class before leaving
INDOOR SHOES
The weather is beginning to change and we
remind everyone of our school procedure,
which encourages an extra pair of running
shoes to be kept at school for indoor use.
Not only does this promote good health
and comfort, it helps keep the classroom
floors dry and clean for everyone’s benefit.
RECESS BREAKS
Recess breaks serve a special purpose in the
daily life of the school. Students area expected to go outside for fresh air and exercise. If you child is sick, please keep him/her
at home until they are well. This prevents
the risk of your child spreading their illness
throughout the classroom. There is NO indoor supervision at recess as staff are occupied elsewhere or on duty outside.
We ask that students dress appropriately
(i.e. coats, gloves, mitts, boots etc.). Where
possible please put identification (your
child’s initials) on your child’s belongings. If
they are dressed warmly, they are better
prepared to participate in outdoor activities
during recess and noon hour.
Please be advised that students are kept indoors at recess during the winter only when
the weather conditions are extremely cold.
Page 6
INSURANCE
With all the activities that take place at
school in the playground, the gym and in
sports, accidents happen. Dental injuries
can occur when two children accidentally
bump heads or fall. The school board does
not carry accident insurance for students.
Fall outdoor activities, extra-curricular and
excursions are an additional reason you
may wish to buy student accident insurance. An insurance package was sent
home with your child(ren). This is optional
for families. You may purchase coverage
for your child at www.insuremykids.com or
by calling toll free at 1-800-463KIDS(5437). Please direct your questions
to a Reliable Life Insurance Representative.
Student Accident Insurance Brochures are
sent home with students at the beginning
San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic School
of each year. If you did not receive one please call
the school.
THE POWER OF A HOUR! BE AN IN-SCHOOL
MENTOR!
Make a difference in the life of a child in as little as
one hour a week by volunteering to be an In-School
Mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel in partnership with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School
Board matches elementary girls and boys with a caring adult mentor. Matches meet for one hour each
week from September – June during school hours
and on school property to share in fun activities such
as playing board games, baking or playing sports.
The result – increased self esteem, better grades and
improved relationships with family and peers.
Children are in need of mentors in our schools and
we need your help. You can make a significant difference by volunteering or encouraging your friends
and family to mentor a child in a school in their
neighborhood.
The In-School Mentoring Program is currently offered
in 25 DPCDSB schools across Peel. Call 905-457-7288
or visit www.bbbspeel.com for more information.

Board or volunteers to assist with our programs, including helping with trip supervision, MUST have a
Criminal Reference Check (CRC) completed by the
Peel Regional Police. For volunteers, CRC are free of

EMPTY SEATS/ STUDENT BUSSING
STOPR has processed many requests for
courtesy seats . However, please be
advised that courtesy seat bus privileges
may be removed at any time as the result of increased seating requirements
for eligible transportation students. Courtesy
transportation privileges are extended on a temporary basis only, subject to seating availability for
eligible students; students taking advantage of this
privilege must utilize existing bus stop locations
only.
Please be reminded that courtesy seat privileges
are valid only until the end of June of the current
school year.
SECONDARY SCHOOL TRANSPORTATION
ELIGIBILITY
Grade 8 students will soon start preparing for transition to secondary school. The policy of the
Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board is to
provide transportation services for all secondary
students who reside more than 4.8 kms from their
designated secondary school, or for students who
reside more than 3.2 kms from their designated
school in communities with no public transit service. All transportation services are provided by
STOPR (Student Transportation of Peel Region).
Students/parents may determine eligibility for
transportation by accessing the STOPR
website at www.stopr.ca and entering the student’s address and program information.
It should be noted that reassessments of temporary transportation services are conducted each
spring. In this regard, eligibility for transportation
should be checked in January and again in July to
ensure that transportation services are available.

Time
Students need to learn to tell time on both analogue and
digital clocks. The world is increasingly digital but
there are still analogue clocks in use. Telling time helps
develop skills in proportional reasoning, fractions , skip
counting and understanding elapsed time. Use everyday
activities and make it
fun!
And don’t forget to turn your clocks back 1 hour on
November 3rd!
K-3
 Make it a practice to use timers as a tool to teach your child
the length of a minute or group of minutes (“You have ___
minutes to get ready for ___.”)
Grades 4-6
 Discuss with your child how much time has passed (“You started
school at 8:30 and you finished at 3. How long were you at
school today?”), or how much longer it will take (“How much
longer did it take a shower than brush your teeth?”).

keep students more engaged, while inspiring active involvement, creativity and positive student
leadership.
Preparing our students with the skills to lead and succeed requires a collective and community approach.
We strongly believe in the old adage that it takes a village to raise a child. This interactive workshop will
encourage parents to actively participate while they become familiar with a selection of unique activities
and challenges that are carefully designed to make immediate and measurable differences in student
success and the development of leadership competencies.

Bullying and the Newcomer
This workshop is intended for parents and students who are new to the
country and want to better understand the problem of bullying and cyber
bullying. It will provide parents with an overview of the Dufferin-Peel’s
Catholic Community, Culture and Caring safe schools related policies,
Dufferin-Peel’s school climate survey data, existing programs and supports
provided to Dufferin-Peel students, and the steps parents can take to help
address the problem and support their children involved in a bullying
situation. Recognizing that bullying situations can sometimes arise from
conflict and misunderstanding, communication strategies will be highlighted
to empower students and parents that are new to the country so as to de-escalate these situations when
they arise.
Presenters: Yvonne Bienko, Safe Schools Consultant
Joanna Kubica, Student Settlement Support Officer

When is My Child Just Being Anxious?
Practical Strategies for Parenting Worried and Stressed Children and Adolescents
Anxiety is the most common mental health problem in children and adolescents. It is difficult to
determine when a child’s worries require professional help. This session will cover typical and
problematic worries, stresses, and other anxious behaviour in
school-aged children. Participants will learn when to be
concerned, as well as how to help their children build resilience
and coping skills when facing the stresses of everyday life.

The Wisdom Project:
A Video Narrative of one Family’s Journey of Hope and Resilience
The Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB)’s Wisdom
Project is about filming narrative from students/parents/staff around
aspects of their high school experience. Students and families have a
rich experience in education and their story or ‘narrative’ has much to
share and to teach about real life experiences at school, some of the
problems faced, the solutions found and the many people who may
have helped along the journey. During the workshop, you will be
introduced to a mother and daughter, both on film and in person, to
discuss their journey of hope and resilience through a cyber bullying episode. You will be invited to
participate in conversations about this narrative and provide your reflections on how this could
further inform the general parent community.
