Objectives: - to learn more about past photo history practices of stereotyping
by photography
- to learn how to manipulate a subject by lighting, props &
costume
- to practice shooting in a photographer’s style eg Cindy
Sherman, Rafael Goldchain, Thomas Ruff
- to practice composing in an interesting, dynamic composition
Assignment:
Process
Part 1
Step 1
Choose one of the stereotypes associated with early forms of
photography eg Native/First nations, Criminals, Poor, Immigrants,
Mentally Ill (Ophelia), or Women (Cindy Sherman film stills).
Working with a partner, use lighting, costume and props to shoot
your self portrait portraying this stereotype in three Photos.

Thumbnail Sketches

Create thumbnail sketches of how you plan to potentially
compose your photograph and how you might employ camera
angle, costume and props. In your thumbnail sketches
indicate the direction of lighting.
Step 4
Photo shoot
Due: _Nov 15, Nov 17
Find a costume and props to support your stereotype. Working
with a partner, arrange spot lights and camera angle to best
photograph your self portrait stereotype. Download the photos.

Make a digital contact sheet.
Choose your most effective three shots.
Edit your shots for composition. Are they successfully cropped?
Are edges used effectively to lead to a focal point?
Has positive/negative space been effectively distributed?
Is there visual movement? Do any of your shots need dodging or
burning or adjustments in levels?
Which image portrays your visual message about your chosen
stereotype with the clearest use of imagery/content?
