ST. JOSEPH SECONDARY SCHOOL MODERNS/E.L.L. INTRODUCTION The Department of Modern Languages and English Language Learning at St. Joseph Secondary School is made up of a dynamic and enthusiastic group of teachers who are dedicated to student success. We offer second and third language courses including Grades 9-12 French and Grades 10-12 Spanish. We also provide all levels of E.L.L. core programs as well as E.L.L. resource. PROGRAMS MODERNS: FRENCH AND SPANISH The St. Joseph Department of Modern Languages and English Language Learning offers French programs ranging from Grade 9 Applied and Academic all the way through to Grade 12 University Level. We also offer Spanish beginning in Grade 10 and continuing through to Grade 12. Our programs are geared towards student success and we are extremely proud of our 99% overall success rate in our courses. It is important for students to get a good start in all of our programs, and this begins in Grade 9. In order to ensure proper placement at either the Academic or Applied Level, we take into account two major factors. If a student has achieved a minimum of 65% in Grade 8 French and has a majority of his or her courses at the Academic Level, then he or she should be enrolled in Academic French for Grade 9 as well. Please feel free to contact the Moderns/ELL Department at (905)812-1376 extension 74315 if you have any questions or concerns. E.L.L. English Language Learning The St. Joseph Department of Moderns Languages and English Language Learning is extremely proud to be able to offer E.S.L. core courses as well as resource to our English Language Learners. We provide all levels of E.S.L. (A through E) and students undergo a detailed screening process upon arrival in our Board in order to ensure proper placement. Our English Language Learners also receive resource time during the school day as needed. They are fully integrated into the regular classroom and are encouraged to learn independently but know that support is available to them. They may receive support in all subject areas. Our English Language Learners are given the opportunity to write tests, quizzes and exams in the resource room in order for them to be accommodated with extra time with the approval of their subject teachers. They are also offered assistance in preparing for the E.Q.A.O Literacy Test. The Department of Modern Languages and English Language Learning is looking forward to answering any of your questions or concerns. Please do not hesitate to contact us at (905)812-1376 extension 74315.
