Pottackal (905) 279-5742 SCHOOL COUNCIL CHAIR: TBA SEPTEMBER 2015 – NEWSLETTER #1 SEPTEMBER 201PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Welcome back to the beginning of a wonderful and exciting 2015/16 school year. It is a pleasure to welcome everyone back and to extend a warm welcome to all new students and their families to our school community. My name is Mrs. Parker and I will be the new Principal of St. Bernadette School. I was fortunate to meet most of the students in June during a couple of visits to the school as well as some parents. I am a graduate of Dufferin Peel Catholic District School board and have been an employee of this dynamic institution since 1990. I am so thrilled to have been chosen Principal of St. Bernadette and am eagerly looking forward to a wonderful stay here. At St. Bernadette School, we are dedicated to providing excellence in Catholic education and to working closely with all the partners to promote the spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical growth of all our students. Parental commitment in working collaboratively with the school staff serves the best interests of our students. If parents have any questions or concerns about your child’s education, you are encouraged to contact the teacher to discuss them. A phone call at the onset of a concern can often resolve it before it becomes a problem. For our part, if we have any questions or concerns, we will also contact you at the earliest opportunity. Please take time to read the school monthly newsletters and other correspondence from the school, as they will contain important information for parents about: school procedures, health and safety, liturgies, activities, curriculum, upcoming events and other information of interest. By being informed about what happens at school, you will be able to continue to support us in serving the best interests of your children. Students are encouraged to: set personal goals and strategies, take responsibility for their own learning and cooperate regularly with school rules. Each child is a precious gift from God and holds great promise for contributing to making our world a better place. May we, the partners in Catholic Education: school, home and parish, work closely together in the best interests of our students. I look forward to many joyful, memory-making school days of learning, self-discovery, working, celebrating, praying and playing together at St. Bernadette School. God Bless, Mrs. Parker Principal Virtue of FAITH BEGINNING A NEW SCHOOL YEAR Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them, the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created, and you shall renew the face of the earth. Holy Spirit, protect us and bless us this year as we live in your love. Amen Thursday, September 24, 2015 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm SCHOOL BOARD ADMINISTRATION Each month you will find important information from School Board administration. For September 2015, we ask that you review important messages from our Family of Schools Superintendent, Mr. D. Amaral and our Trustee, Mrs. L. del Rosario. Both messages were sent home on the first day of school and will be posted to our website: http://www.dpcdsb.org/BERNA. For your reference, the Director of Education for DufferinPeel Catholic School Board is Mr. J. Kostoff and the Associate Directors are: S. McWatters and J. Hrajnik. Please refer to the Dufferin-Peel website at: http://www.dpcdsb.org/cec to find information about our school board, current initiatives, programs and information. SEPTEMBER TENTATIVE CLASS PLACEMENTS The number of students enrolled in a school determines the number of classes and teachers. As the school year begins, new students may still be registering at St. Bernadette School, while others may be leaving. Therefore, there is a possibility of having to reorganize classes. Parents will be notified by the September 18th, 2015 Professional Activity Day should it be necessary to make changes in order to balance the size of classes. Until that time, all class placements are tentative. Any students who may be affected by any changes will move to their new classrooms on Monday, September 21, 2015. Also, please know that we try very hard to avoid split grades but unfortunately school registration numbers will often dictate the need for split grades. Every attempt is made to ensure that students are not in split grades two years in a row if at all possible. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation as we continue to meet the needs of our growing school community. “Blessed are the peacemakers; they shall be called the children of God.” (Matthew 5-9) 905-501-9498, Press 1 for Attendance line Please call by 8:15 am if your child is going to be away for any reason. VIRTUES EDUCATION During this school year, we will continue with the Virtues Education initiative. A virtue is a habit or established capacity to perform good actions according to a moral standard. A Catholic school is an ideal place to practice and prepare to live a virtuous life. When we demonstrate these virtues, we are making the presence of God visible in the world around us. We are contributing to nurturing a loving, peaceful environment, free of discrimination and bullying. During the month of September we will focus on the virtue of faith. Faith is an attitude, which encourages us to involve God in our lives and helps us develop and maintain our relationships with God and with others when things are going well and when they are not. SCHOOL START AND END TIMES 2015 8:30 am FDK to Grade 8 Classes Begin 10:30 am Recess 11:30 am Lunch – All grades 12:30 pm Afternoon Start 1:55 pm Recess 3:00 pm JK to Grade 8 Dismissal Supervision of pupils in the mornings begins at 8:15 am. BERNADETTE SCHOOL: "Faith, Discipline, Excellence” Behaviour Expectations At St. Bernadette School, we strive to provide an environment where all students feel safe, happy and respected. Pupils are expected to behave in a manner that reflects a Christian attitude. The question ‘What would Jesus do?’ provides guidance for making positive behaviour choices. Behaviour expectations for respectful, safe, conduct and consequences for inappropriate behaviour are reviewed regularly with students. All students are expected to work in cooperation with staff, peers, parents and the parish to build a safe and caring learning environment. They are expected to follow our school rules: Daily attendance at school and punctuality are very important. If your child is going to be late or absent from school, please inform the office by 8:15 am at (905) 501-9498 and press 1 for the Attendance line. The school has an answering machine to receive messages at any time of the day or night. The child’s parent or the legal guardian must call the school regarding their child’s attendance at school. All students who arrive after 8:30 am or 12:30 pm will enter through the front door and complete a late slip from the office. They will be marked late in the register. This measure is to ensure the safety of your child/ren. Messages can be left on the school line at any time. Please leave the following information: 1) Your child’s name 2) Your child’s teacher 3) Date and time of absence 4) Reason and duration of absence RESPECT GOD, RESPECT YOURSELF, RESPECT OTHERS, AND RESPECT THE ENVIRONMENT. ENTRY and DISMISSAL These rules apply anytime and anywhere throughout the school: in the classroom, on the playground, in the neighbourhood, on the bus and on educational excursions. Pupils are reminded of the importance of behaviours such as: • cooperating with staff • not hitting, teasing, bullying or hurting others • playing safely during recess times • entering and exiting the school in a safe and orderly fashion • taking care of school property • leaving personal electronic devices, roller blades, skateboards, scooters, laser pens and valuables at home • not play fighting or playing tackle sports • not throwing snowballs during the winter and regularly dressing appropriately for a Catholic school setting. Students are reminded of the importance of reporting inappropriate conduct or concerns to a teacher. They should not take matters that can result in a physical altercation, into their own hands. We continue to educate pupils and inform parents about bullying prevention and virtuous living, and to work through a progressive discipline model with appropriate consequences. In the event of inclement weather, students will enter through the front doors and enter the gym where they will be supervised by teachers. All students will enter and exit the building through their assigned doors before and after school. Students leaving the school for any reason (appointments, lunch, etc.) will be ask to sign out at the office and then proceed to exit the building through the front doors. If you make arrangements for your child to leave the school with someone other than yourself, please send a dated, signed note indicating this to your child’s teacher. REGULAR ATTENDANCE AND PUNCTUALITY Regular attendance and punctuality are important life skills that apply not only in the educational setting, but also in various other settings and especially in the work place. When a student arrives late, it can be a disruption to his/her learning as well as to the learning of the other students in the class. A total of the number of days absent and late are documented and become part of the student’s record. Students should arrive on time to line up with their peers when the bell rings. It is important to address frequent absences and late arrivals for non-medical reasons early as they may have a long-term negative impact. It is a parent’s responsibility, as outlined in the Education Act, to ensure that their child is in regular attendance and on time for school. When regular attendance and punctuality are problematic, a meeting with parents, the principal and other school personal may be required in order to discuss a plan for helping the child improve attendance and/or prompt arrival. MEET THE TEACHER/OPEN HOUSE Thursday, September 24, 2015 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm We invite you to come and meet your child/ren’s teacher(s). VISITORS TO ST. BERNADETTE Parents are welcomed to St. Bernadette School throughout the year, however, for the safety of all children, parents and visitors must use only the front door for entry and must sign in at the office and receive a visitor’s sticker each and every time you visit the building. As a reminder, we are now required to keep all outside doors locked, including the front doors. The only access point will be via the front doors and visitors will require entry through a buzzer system. Please be patient as there will be times when Mrs. Magi will need to be away from her desk and may not be able to admit you as soon as you ring the buzzer. At no time are visitors permitted to go to the classrooms as this is a disruption to student programming and may pose a safety concern. Since the hallways are busy during pick up times, siblings and parents are asked to arrange with your child, a meeting place outside of the school. Messages and deliveries (keys, lunches, etc.) are handled through the office. Please remember: to most students in the school, you are a stranger. Thank you for making St. Bernadette School safe. STUDENT AGENDA PLANNERS The use of the agenda plays a critical role in your child’s learning. It has been proven that students who maintain an up to date and accurate agenda are more organized and ready to learn. We encourage you to check your children’s agenda daily and also feel free to use the agenda as a means of communication with your child’s teacher. COMMUNICATION Open communication between home and school is very important. Although we will be reporting to you formally during the school year, please do not hesitate to contact us at any time if you have questions or concerns. A phone call on the onset of a concern usually resolves itself before it becomes a problem. On our part, if we have any concerns about your child, we will also contact you at the earliest opportunity. Newsletters will be sent home once a month throughout the school year. Newsletters are meant to serve as a means of keeping strong communication links between home, school and parish. They will inform you about various school activities, programs, routines, reminders and so forth. The newsletters will be supplemented by letters regarding special events, trips, religious celebrations, etc. KISS ’N RIDE School start up always seems to bring with it traffic headaches. To attempt to avert any possible confusion parents/guardians are reminded that the drive in front of the school is ONLY for drop off and pick up times. Parents/guardians are not to use the visitor parking when the Kiss ’n Ride is open as this is a safety concern for those dropping off or picking up their children in the Kiss ’n Ride lane. The access to the staff parking is closed from 8:15 am to 8:30 am and again from 3:00 pm to 3:15 pm. Student/staff safety at St. Bernadette is paramount. Thank you in advance to the parents/guardians who help us maximize school safety for all by following the routines. INFORMATION UPDATE Please keep us informed of any changes to home, work or emergency contact phone numbers. In the unfortunate event that your child is ill or injured, we must be able to contact a parent and/or babysitter immediately. It is very important to keep this information accurate and current. A STUDENT VERIFICATION FORM will be sent home with every student after Re-organization Day. Please review it carefully for any missing information or errors and update phone numbers. Complete the Emergency Dismissal portion on the back and sign both sides of form. Please return this form to your child’s classroom teacher by Friday, September 25, 2015. All information provided on these sheets is confidential and is used solely for school/emergency purposes. LUNCHES At St. Bernadette we will continue to practice Healthy Eating as outlined in the Canadian Food Guide. We ask parents to take some time to send their children with homemade nutritious snacks and lunch. Fast food is high in fat and low in fiber and vitamins. We will continue to include a Healthy recipe or idea in each monthly newsletter and hopefully these will assist parents in your food preparation for your child/ren. You are the best educator for your child and a healthy diet is key to learning and living. Each child who remains at school daily for lunch should come to school with a packed lunch. This minimizes classroom disruptions and ensure their learning is not disrupted. On the RARE OCCASION you drop off a lunch, please ensure it is here at the school before 11:25 am and is labeled with both your child’s and his/her teacher’s name. These lunches can be dropped off on the grey table in the front foyer just outside the main office. Should you wish your child to have a warm lunch, please ensure you indicate that on the form being sent home. If you allow your child to leave the school property for lunch on those RARE OCCASIONS, please make sure you send with him/her a signed note indicating they have your permission to leave the school property. Students who leave the school for lunch MUST sign back into the building by 12:25 pm at the front office. Please note that you will be solely responsible for your child’s safety if he/she leaves school property with your permission at lunch time. PEANUT AND NUT ALLERGIES There are students in our school who have severe peanut or nut allergies, which are life threatening. Allergic people exposed to peanuts, nuts and their by-products, or residues are at risk of suffering a serious reaction. Some children are so sensitive that even the smell of peanut butter or nuts can cause problems and could be fatal. Because of the seriousness of this condition, everyone’s continued cooperation is needed in not sending foods to school with peanuts, nuts or their by-products. In the event that a child accidentally brings a lunch or snack with peanuts, nuts or their by-products, this student will be sent to eat their lunch in the office or in another room. They can invite a friend to eat lunch with them. Following are some strategies that parents, students and staff can use to help keep our school safer for children with peanut or nut allergies. • Avoid sending foods from home that may contain nuts or nut products such as peanut oil, peanut butter, peanut sauce, peanut meal, mixed nuts, ground nuts and mandalona nuts. Hydrolyzed vegetable protein may also contain peanuts and is not considered safe for people with peanut allergies. • Read food labels carefully. Avoid products that do not carry a list of ingredients. It’s important to read food labels each time you buy a product that will be eaten by a child with a nut allergy, or by a child in the same classroom, because products and production facilities often change. • Clean hands and face immediately after eating peanut butter or nut containing products before heading off to school or at school; if brought by accident. • Avoid sharing snacks and drinks. Thank you for your on-going cooperation in helping to make our school safer for students with peanut/nut allergies. Further to this, as part of “Sabrina’s Law”, we are no longer permitted to allow treats for sharing with other students. On special occasions (Halloween, Christmas) teachers will advise students what foods they can bring for their own consumption. To acknowledge your child’s birthday, if you would like to send something, items such as pencils or “dollar store treasures” that are not edible would be appropriate. Thank you for your consideration and co-operation in making our classrooms safer for students JOIN OUR ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC SCHOOL COUNCIL The purpose of school councils as mandated by the Ministry of Education is through active participation of parents to improve pupil achievement and to enhance the accountability of the education system to parents/guardians. Nominations for positions on the St. Bernadette School Council will be received in the school office from after Sept. 12. Forms and a brief biography must be submitted to the office no later than Friday, Sept. 25, 2015 between 8:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. All nomination forms received are to be signed by a school official and marked with the date and time received. Nomination forms may be obtained from the table just outside the school office. Elections will be held on Tuesday, September 29th if necessary. The first NEW council meeting will be held at St. Bernadette School library on the evening of Wednesday, October 7, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 7:00 pm. Community, Parish and OAPCE Representatives are appointed positions. Parents must hold the majority of seats on the school council. A ‘parent’ is anyone who is the parent of a pupil in the school where the child is enrolled. A person is not qualified to be a parent member of a school council if: he/she is employed at the school or he/she is employed by the Board at another school location and fails to take reasonable steps to inform voters of the employment before the vote. The School Council is mandated by the Ministry of Education to hold a minimum of four meetings per year. All meetings are public meetings and opened to the parent community of the school. School Councils are advisory in nature, but can have a positive impact on both the quality of education and day-to-day activities within the school. The Catholic School Council focuses on promoting Catholic values within our publicly funded education system. The Catholic School Council works in co-operation with the school principal in providing the best educational experience for students. Please consider joining St. Bernadette Catholic School Council 2015/16. CRIMINAL REFERENCE CHECKS In compliance with Ministry of Education directives, volunteers in a school are required to provide an original copy of their Criminal Reference Check to the school. If you would like to volunteer on school trips, please pick up a form at the office, complete it and bring it to the local police station. There is a waiting period often lasting from 4 to 6 weeks. Please try to do this early to avoid disappointment in not getting the form back in time to attend school excursions. If you already have a current CRC on file here at the school office, in order for it to be valid for this current school year, the date must on the CRC must be no earlier than March 2015 unless you have already completed an Annual Offence Declaration with our office. STUDENT MONITOR NEEDED Our school is in need of an additional Student Monitors to supervise students during the lunch hour each day. To be considered for this position please contact the school Principal. ALL new employees will be required to submit a current original Criminal Background Check (CBC) including a "Vulnerable Sector Screening" (VSS) issued within 6 months prior to commencing employment with the Board. Responsibilities of the Student Monitor Be aware of the school rules; o Be prompt in reporting for supervision assignments; o Become informed of specific medical/behavioural situations pertaining to students supervised o Be aware of the school emergency plans; Notify the teacher on duty when a problem arises. MEDICATION AT SCHOOL When parents request that medication be stored at school, and made available to pupils by school personnel, the parent is responsible for completing the Board Storage and Distribution of Medication form. This form is available from the office and must be completed by the parent and by the physician. The completed form is placed on file at the office. Medication is stored, after consultation with parents, and made available to students under the supervision of school personnel. To ensure safety for all children, please do not send medication to school, unless prior arrangements have been made with the principal. PICTURE DAY – Thursday, October 1, 2015 MINIMIZING DISRUPTIONS TO CLASSES We appreciate continued parental help and support in minimizing disruptions to classes, whenever possible. By trying our best not to disturb classes, we are reducing disruptions to quality teaching and learning opportunities for your child. Your cooperation with the following is appreciated: (a) sending a note in advance to your child’s teacher when your child needs to be picked up early, then meeting him/her in the office and signing them out; (b) when picking your child up early, doing so closer to recess or lunch time (c) when delivering lunch to school, writing your child’s and the teacher’s names on lunch bags and leaving them on the table in the foyer and (d) informing relatives and caregivers of school procedures, who may be dropping off or picking up your child. We understand that there will be times when disruptions will be necessary and unavoidable. • Students should not cross the road before the school bus arrives at their stop, unless supervised by their parent/guardian; • Students should wait for direction from the Bus Driver and check the traffic before walking across the road and never, cross behind the bus; • Look all ways when crossing the road, stay alert; • When the bus stops, students should approach the doorway in single file and board in single file using the handrail, then sit down; APPLYING FOR COURTESY SEATS ON THE SCHOOL BUS Courtesy seats on the school bus are assigned in early October. Parents who are interested in applying for a courtesy seat on the school bus should stop by the office to pick up an application form. You will be notified if/when a seat is available. You will be asked to provide a rationale for access to transportation. All requests should be in no later than Friday, September 18, 2015. FRIENDS RIDING ON OTHER SCHOOL BUSES Occasionally, we receive requests for students to ride on a friend's school bus in order to attend a social event or similar function after school. Please be reminded that bus transportation is provided to the stop nearest your home and to the school from that stop. We are unable to adjust this policy by allowing students to change buses from time to time. As a result, permission will not be given for a student to ride on a different bus to go to a friend's home after school. STUDENT USE OF SCHOOL MATERIALS USE OF (PEDS) AT SCHOOL (CELL PHONES CAMERAS) To promote respect for the dignity of all members of our school community and to enhance pupil achievement and safety, the use of a PED is strictly prohibited in school (including portables) or during school related activities (such as retreats, field trips, sports events, etc). Failure to comply with this policy may result in the confiscation of the PED and/or disciplinary action. The school and the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board assume no responsibility for the loss, recovery, repair or replacement for any PED brought onto school property. It is the policy of the Dufferin Peel Catholic The school will provide your child with materials such as pens, pencils, workbooks and textbooks. Therefore, it is not necessary that you purchase any such materials unless you wish to do so. However, it is important that children learn to make proper use of these materials and, with this in mind, your child’s teacher will explain our expectations. Students will be responsible for replacing of lost/damaged texts or library books. Parents have public access to all current Ministry of Education documents at www.edu.gov.on.ca. District School Board that PEDs are to be kept out-of-sight, turned off and not used within school premises or during school sanctioned events. To prevent the loss or damage of REPORTING HEAD INJURIES Even when it may appear to be insignificant, we inform parents of ALL head injuries at school which are reported to us. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. We are not intending to alarm you, rather to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump/injure their head at school. PEDs, the school encourages students to leave their PEDs at home. NOTE: There will be a NEW “BOYD” (Bring Your Own Device) rollout in October 2015. Information was sent home on the first day of school and more information to follow soon. VOLUNTEERS IN THE SCHOOL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY Parents/guardians are asked to review bus safety rules with your children from time to time. We will continue to review them at school. • Be at the bus stop on time; (approximately, ten minutes before scheduled arrival time) • While waiting for the bus, students should be standing well away from the roadway until the bus has stopped; • Never play around close to the road; and never reach under the bus for something; • Be ready to board bus in an orderly line, youngest first; If you are interested in volunteering at St. Bernadette School, please leave your name at our school office and someone will be in touch with you. Volunteers are expected to have a current Criminal Reference Check on file at the school office and must complete an orientation session before working with students. During the orientation session, the volunteer coordinator addresses various aspects of volunteering in the school. All volunteers must sign in at the office and receive their name tag before proceeding to another part of the school. The name tag is to be worn and visible until the volunteer signs out and leaves the school. FIRE DRILLS & LOCKDOWN PROCEDURES In accordance with Ministry regulations, Fire drills will be conducted during various times during the school year. While we hope that a real fire situation never arises, this practice helps prepare students in the event of a real fire. In addition, our School Board has established lockdown procedures should a high risk incident involving weapons occur in the school, or on school property, that could endanger the lives and/or the safety of students and/or staff. We will practice the Emergency Lockdown Procedure with pupils two times during the school year and review it from time to time. AROUND OUR SCHOOL COMMUNITY. Our FDK students will walk the parameter of our school yard in order to raise funds for cancer research. Each year we take pride in being an active participant in the Terry Fox Run. We encourage families to get involved by donating a TOONIE. All funds collected will go directly to helping to find a cure for cancer. We are encouraging students to show their support by wearing red and white. There will be participation forms going home soon. Please help us help cancer research! ST. BERNADETTE CATHOLIC SCHOOL DRESS CODE Parental assistance is required in helping your child make appropriate clothing choices for school. In striving to achieve personal and social values that are attached to appropriate dress, St. Bernadette Catholic School is committed to standards of neatness, cleanliness and modesty. Revealing shorts, skirts and tops such as: tops with ‘spaghetti’ straps, muscle shirts, tank tops, halter tops, mesh shirts, string tops, tube tops or anything that exposes a bare back or midriff and/or undergarments, are inappropriate attire for school. The length of shorts and skirts must go past the bottom of the student’s fingertips when hands are relaxed at their sides. Tops must have a minimum of 5 cm (approximately the width of 3 adult fingers) at the shoulder. A little more latitiude is given to younger students. What may be considered appropriate for 5 to 8 year olds, is not necessarily appropriate for 9 to 13 year olds. Shirts, with inappropriate, suggestive or offensive messages or pictures are not permitted on any clothing or personal belongings. Pupils, who wear inappropriate clothes to school, may be asked to leave the class to correct the situation by covering up with a jacket or a sweater or to telephone their parent to arrange for a change of clothing to be brought to school. For safety reasons, all students must have appropriate foot wear at all times during school times. In the event of fire, etc. students must be prepared to leave the building. SLIPPERS of any type are NOT PERMITTED to be worn for safety reasons STUDENT ACCIDENT INSURANCE As required by the Education Act and the Ministry of Education, the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board annually provides parents with information about costeffective student accident insurance coverage via student courier. Although enrolment is voluntary, the Board encourages parents to take advantage of the inexpensive insurance coverage, especially if their child/children participate in sports, excursions/field trips, or, if parents do not have dental insurance coverage. Enrolment is required in writing—there are two options for enrolment: 1) Complete the traditional form and mail it in or 2) Photocopy the form and fax it to Reliable Life at 1-905522-7211 or 1-800-463-KIDS (5437). Parents alone have the right to insure their children. New this year, a parental acknowledgement concerning Student Accident Insurance and this line has been added to the Curricular Athletics forms in order to reduce extra paperwork.
