PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The month of September has flown by. We were fortunate to have very little reorganization at St. Bernadette School. Our Kindergarten registration was sufficient to allow for an additional Kindergarten class in the morning. We were lucky to welcome back Ms. Azevedo to the role of Kindergarten teacher. She is also teaching planning time subjects on two afternoons. Students in all the classes are hard at work. We want to thank you for the important role you play in their education. Each day you receive communication in the agenda. You support your children and the school by reading over the agenda each evening and ensuring homework is complete. Thank you for setting aside time in your very busy schedules for this important role. It is in working together that your child will maximize their success in school. Your cooperation and patience have eased the transition to the locked doors that now keep students safer. Though sometimes inconvenient it limits access to strangers. When you come in or leave the school please ring the doorbell located beside the door. It may take a few minutes to respond if we are occupied. Thank you to the parents who drop off lunches on the lunch table by 11:15. This ensures are sitting in their seats and ready to begin eating at 11:30. Students are not allowed to head out the doors to pick up lunches. Remember you are always welcome to take your child home for lunch. Just put a note in your child’s agenda. Our Catholic School Council met for the first time on October 2, 2013. We have a wonderful team that plan events for our students and their families. Please consider becoming involved in the council, “many hands makes for light work”. As we approach Thanksgiving let us each take a moment to appreciate all the gifts God has given us. We have so much to be thankful for here in Canada: religion, freedom, education, health care, opportunity. Take an afternoon to appreciate the Fall colours as a family. Enjoy a walk at a local park. Have a very Happy Thanksgiving. We congratulate and welcome our new Associate Director Sheila MacWatters who was appointed to her new position in June 2013. We wish Mrs. McWatters all the best as we continue to be blessed with her guidance and wisdom. WEATHER The Fall is a time when weather changes a great deal. Some days begin cold and get extremely hot while others begin with sun and suddenly change to rain. Please be sure to include a windbreaker and sweater with your child’s knapsack each day. A raincoat is also a great idea for this time of year. VIRTUE ASSEMBLIES Monthly we will celebrate and showcase virtues at the Virtue Assemblies. In the October assembly we will highlight the Virtue of Faith and introduce our monthly focus: the Virtue of Empathy. VOLUNTEERS We are always in need of volunteers accompany us on trips and to assist or supplement the excellent work and teaching that occurs at our school. You may wish to volunteer by helping our Catholic School Council with pizza days or fundraisers. You may want to read with children or assist on class trips. All volunteers now require an up-to-date Criminal Reference Check even for trips. Please pick up a CRC application form at the office. STUDENT LUNCHES WELLNESS If your child is going to be away or ill please contact the school and leave a message. When your child returns to school he/she should feel well enough to participate in all school activities including recess. FIRE DRILLS/LOCK DOWN ROCEDURES In accordance with Ministry regulations, three fire drills are conducted in the Fall and three in the Spring each school year. While we hope that a real fire situation never arises, this practice helps prepare students in the event of a real fire. In addition, our School Board has established lockdown procedures should a high risk incident involving weapons occur in the school, or on school property, that could endanger the lives and safety of students and staff. We have practiced both Emergency Lockdown Procedures and fire drills with students. Thank you to parents who send their children daily with lunches. For the few times your child “forgets” his or her lunch please drop off lunches labeled with your child’s name on the lunch table before 11:15 a.m. This ensures your child will have enough time to eat before heading out for recess at 11:50.When packing your child’s lunch remember we are promoting “Healthy Schools”. Please refer to the attached Canada Food Guide to assist your child with making nutritious choices. OPENING/SCHOOL THANKSGIVING MASS Our Thanksgiving Mass will take place on Tuesday, October 8th at 9:00 a.m. All are welcome to attend. Please remind your child of the importance of silence in both procedures so alternate instructions can be heard. BRITANNICA ONLINE EMERGENCY CONTACTS Please note that the DPCDSB has purchased the rights to Britannica Online. Students, staff and parents can access this electronic resource either from the school or at home via username and password which will be sent home with your child in the form of a Britannica bookmark. This resource has been made available through our Board’s Library Information site located at http://www.dpcdsb.org/CEC/ Please ensure the school has updated information with regards to emergency contacts and phone numbers. This problem is an infestation by head lice also known as pediculosis. Unfortunately, head lice has become common throughout North America in humans for centuries. They are in no way connected with poor hygiene or dirt. Anyone can become infested. In order to control these pests we will follow these procedures and request your full cooperation and understanding. If cases are found in the classroom, we shall inform the parents of that class. Also, if there are siblings then their classes will be informed too. We would ask that you check your children’s hair and if you find them to be infested please notify the school and we will advise as to treatment. If a child is infested he/she will be kept out of school until they have been treated with the correct shampoo and they’re entirely clear of both lice and nits (eggs). Information on head lice may also be obtained from your family doctor or pharmacist. Clubs, teams and intramural activities for the 2013/2014school year have been planned. Intermediate volleyball, junior and intermediate cross country, and choir are currently well underway. Students should listen to morning announcements regarding information meetings and signing up for tryouts. TERRY FOX WALK/RUN On Friday September 27, 2013, the staff and students of St. Bernadette School walked in support of the Terry Fox Foundation. Our annual Terry Fox walk always generates a lot of excitement and support. Students walked through the neighbourhood to bring forward cancer awareness and to raise funds for cancer research. A special thank you to all the parents that were able to volunteer and walk with us. THANKSGIVING FOOD DRIVE We will be holding our annual food drive of non perishable items. These will be donated to St. Martin of Tours parish to support the needs of our community. We will also be holding a pyjama day on Wednesday, October 9. Students are asked to contribute a non-perishable food items to support this cause. Consider sending these much needed items. Cold Cereal Canned kids pasta (Chef Boy-r-Dee, etc.) Cookies Crackers Condensed Soup Chunky Soup Instant Coffee Condiments: Ketchup, mustard, Salad dressing, salsa, BBQ sauce etc. Juice ( large cans or bottles) Toilet paper, paper towels Shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, body wash, toothpaste We thank you in anticipation of your kindness and generous spirit that is so often found amongst all of us at St. Bernadette. HALLOWEEN AT SCHOOL In keeping with the excitement of the time students in the Primary grades JK-3 may decide to wear a costume on October 31. Students should be able to remove the costume at recess for safe-keeping. For safety, students may not wear masks or carry weapons. Students in Junior/ Intermediate grades are encouraged to wear black & orange. Students activities for the day will be linked to Halloween/ All Saints/All Souls theme. HALLOWEEN SAFETY Halloween is just around the corner. In school we will remind students about the safety rules so that they can both enjoy the evening and stay safe and well. Here are some suggestions to keep it safe for all our children. Choose brightly coloured costumes Use face paint instead of masks Plan a safe route with child Remind your child of road safety rules Accompany your children Remind children not to enter homes Check the treats before allowing your Children to eat them In addition, we will also be stressing the fact that the most important aspect of our activities at this time of year is the celebration of two Feast Days. On November 1st, we honour All Saints Day and we are encouraged to pray that we might emulate their example in our daily lives. On the following day, November 2nd, we remember all those who have gone before us in faith by celebrating the Feast of All Souls. Again we are reminded that while those who have died are out of sight, they are not out of mind or beyond our prayers. NEW Video on Math Development for Parents Watch and share EQAO’s NEW video for parents titled “How Many Nickels Make a Dollar? The Importance of Proportional Reasoning in Your Child’s Math Development.” Proportional reasoning is an important mathematical way of thinking needed for much of the math that’s used in school and in everyday life. The video explains what proportional reasoning is, why it’s important and what parents can do to support its development in their children. We do this in recognition of the potential danger of any injury involving the head area. Our intent is not to alarm you, but to keep you informed. Please remind your child to let a staff member know if they bump their head or if they get hurt at school. Your child’s safety is our number one priority. We want to ensure a safe arrival and departure for our students. We want to thank the parents that use the Kiss ‘n Ride for following the guidelines as set out in the September newsletter. Please remember to pull right up to the front before allowing your child (ren) to get out of the car. Also students must exit their car from the right side only. Children must have their knapsacks and belongings with them, they should not be getting things from the vehicle’s trunk as this is not only unsafe, but also slows down the process. If you are using the Kiss ‘n Ride in the morning or the afternoon, it is imperative that you never leave your car unattended. Please do not idle your car. Please note that the morning Kiss ’n Ride program will not begin before supervision begins in the yard at 8:15 a.m. The safety of our students is our number one concern!
