We have our Eco-Team up and running, with two representatives from each classroom to monitor our waste habits. The pillar we have chosen for this school year is Waste. We will be great Stewards of God‘s Earth by trying our best to reduce, reuse and to recycle. This year our school would like to take part in a Waste Free Lunch Challenge. Every day we encourage the students to bring a litter-less lunch. A litter-less lunch is one that comes in reusable containers. A zip lock bag is allowed provided that the student is taking it home to be reused. Organic waste is also allowed such as: apple cores, banana peels etc. However, every Wednesday will be Waste less Wednesdays also known as ―Boomerang Lunch” days. “Boomerang” lunches are those that consist of absolutely 100% no garbage! Every piece of the student‟s lunch that is not consumed is returned home. This includes any leftover food, containers, recyclables, even garbage. All food that is not eaten must be returned home, as well as; all organic waste to be composted in the household green bin. Children are not allowed to throw anything in the garbage bins on this day. Garbage bins will be covered, on Wednesdays, as a visual reminder that there will be no garbage disposal on this day. Parents, we encourage your child to bring home food that is not eaten or they do not want. This allows you to talk about it and come up with ideas for food that your child will eat. Surveys show that it is a really good idea to get children involved in choosing and making their own lunches, keeping in mind that they do have to choose from healthy options. Our goal is for every student to bring in a totally litter-less lunch. Our Terracycle waste collection continues this year, which is: Kool-Aid Jammers and Tassimo coffee/tea pods. Thank you to all parents who are sending in their used Tassimo pods. Eco-Fact: Energy saved from one recycled aluminum can will operate a TV set for 3 hours, and is the equivalent to half a can of gasoline. LIGHTING UP THE GIVING TREE WINTER WEAR Once again this year we are asking for your help to create Christmas Hampers for the needy families of St. Martin of Tours Parish. We invite you to ―light up‖ our tree. Our Christmas tree will be in the foyer. Gift buying will be a little different this year. Families are asked to purchase anything from the list below and place it underneath the tree. When the gift is brought to the foyer, students will be given a star ornament that they can write their name on and then place the star on the tree. Below is a wish list, but this is just a guide line, we welcome any and all items given for our neighbours in need. It is Winter in Canada. This means children need to dress warmly. Here are some tips to help you ensure your child is dressed for the cold: A hat is essential-80% of body heat is lost through the top of the head Wish List: turkey voucher/gift card (Walmart), hats, mitts, gloves, scarves, socks, toiletries, toys/books for children Mitts-to allow the fingers to stay together to generate increased heat Food: canned ham, cranberry sauce, packet stuffing, canned fruit, jams, tea, coffee, cookies, chocolate, candies, hot chocolate. The families consist of: Mom, Dad, Boy (11 years), Girl (12 years) Mom, Dad, Boy (11 years), Girl (4 years), Girl (10 years) A windproof/waterproof jacket –to maximize warmth and maintain dryness on snowy days Winter boots-to provide traction to prevent slips and falls, to keep feet dry and warm Waterproof pants-to ensure students are warm outdoors and are dry when they enter after recesses Thank you for your continued support. All gifts should be in by Wednesday, December 12, with a tag to indicate who it is intended for ie ‖Boy 11‖. ENTRY AND DISMISSAL DOORS All students enter and exit the building through their assigned doors before and after school and at lunch recess. Any students leaving through the front doors must be signed out at the office. In case of inclement weather students will be admitted at their assigned doors and will be supervised by teachers in the hallways. Remember, except under very unusual conditions students go outside at recess and over the lunch hour. For health and safety reasons students must have indoor shoes. In the event of an emergency evacuation children will not have time to put on boots. Punctuality FOOD IN THE SCHOOL As we have a number of students in the school with food allergies, we remind parents to not send food/drinks with their child to be shared with other students. Thank you for your help in respecting the health concern for our students YOUTH FAITH AMBASSODORS The Youth Faith Ambassadors were invited to attend the Mississauga South Catholic Leadership Rally this month. Upon arrival they were dispersed among the many tables of various schools within the hall. Each table was led by a High School level Faith Ambassador. The theme of the day was ―Jesus is the Gate…..I am …..The Gate‖ The St. Bernadette Faith Ambassadors took part in many enjoyable activities, discussions, and songs. In the end each table constructed a wooden lattice of positive words, good feelings, and praise. Each lattice was put together with some string and together we all built our own gate to God. It was a powerful message of our journey to God and the influences we must surpass to make our way through the gates to be fully with God. The school day begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. To be on time students should be dropped at school by 8:25 a.m. so they are able to line up and enter with their class. Teachers begin lessons immediately after students enter. Students who are late frequently miss the same subject. As a result they arrive having missed the main instructions for lessons and the plan for the day. PLEASE HELP YOUR CHILD BE SUCCESSFUL BY HAVING HIM/HER ARRIVE ON TIME. Should your child be absent be sure to call in and leave us a message on the answering machine at 905-501-9498 , press 1 for the attendance line. Kiss „N Ride PLEASE NOTE THAT CARS ARE NOT TO USE THE BUS LANE AT ANY TIME. Parents are asked to use our Kiss ‗N Ride lanes for dropping off and picking up children. Parents please do not leave your car unattended in any of the Kiss‘ N Ride lanes at any time of the day as you may be ticketed as this is a Fire Route. If you are dropping off a lunch for your child please park your car in a designated parking spot or on the street. We ask that parents use extra caution when using our Kiss ‗N Ride lanes in the winter months. Please drive safely and take your time. Our focus is always to keep all of our students safe. School Yard Safety Just a reminder that student supervision begins at 8:15; students must not be dropped off at the school before this time. Students must always follow the safety rules: No Body Contact, Feet on the Ground, Speak as Jesus speaks to others, stay within the appropriate boundries for your grade, Respect the adults on duty. Snowballs When the cold months arrive and snow and ice on the ground is plentyful, we all like to play in it and with it. Throwing snowballs and sliding on ice is fun. However, as much fun as it is, snow and ice, can be very dangerous when lots of people are in a small area. In order for our school to be as safe as possible, the school rule is that snow stays on the ground. There will be no snowballs, kicking snow or any other activity with snow or ice that could be harmful. Students are not to slide on ice or hills. Please review these rules with your child. Lost and Found Are you missing any clothing that was sent to school and never found it‘s way home? Please come and check our lost and found. As Catholics we commemorate it in many ways. We anticipate the celebration of Jesus‘ birth, prepare to close out another liturgical year and make plans to spend time with family and friends. As stewards of Catholic education, we embrace the opportunity Advent offers us to make the coming of Christ more meaningful in the lives of our students. Pope Benedict XVI explains: "Advent is the spiritual season of hope par excellence, and in this season the whole Church is called to be hope, for itself and for the world.‖ The promise of the Lord's goodness is all around us—we have only to be attentive and prepare the Lord‘s way as we hear John the Baptist proclaim in the gospel. During this season of hope, may we open our hearts to God's love as we prepare to welcome Christ into our lives and homes. As we come to the end of the calendar year, 2012, it is also important for us to reflect upon and celebrate our successes over the past school year. As in previous years, there is much to be proud of. Dufferin-Peel continues to be leaders in Catholic education in the 21st century. With the collaborative efforts of home, school, and parish working together, our board continues to exceed provincial standards in student achievement, and remain a hallmark for Catholic education. As we embark on a new year, we continue to strive to improve the learning experience and environment for all our 21st century learners. Recently our board held a congress for all principals and senior administrators in order to reflect on our 21st century schools and what it involves. With new and improved technological advancements in the classrooms such as smartboards, advanced computers and programs, more hands on learning experiences, and by empowering our students to be innovative and creative thinkers and problem solvers, we are preparing our students for successful careers and new jobs of the 21st century. Most importantly our students are receiving a Catholic education. One that will be illuminated in spirit of Christ and will reflect our gospel values through all aspects of the school environment. Our students will leave our schools not only modeling the gospel values, but embrace stewardship along with our Ontario Catholic School Graduate Expectations. I wish to thank all our parents, volunteers, who have given the St. Bernadette school community so much help and have willingly assisted both students and staff throughout the first term. My family and I wish to extend to all members of the St. Bernadette school community a hope that the Christmas Season will be filled with the peace and joy of Christ and that the New Year will bring much health and prosperity for all. To everyone, best wishes for a joyous celebration of the wonderful hope represented by the birth of our Lord, the Prince of Peace. Many blessings for the new year ahead. God Bless Peter Ferreira, Trustee Mississauga Ward 6 and 11
