Around Campus
Executive Director of Grant Development Judith Cawhorn has
great news: MCC is among only 12 community colleges in the nation
recently awarded a Tech Prep Demonstration Grant from the Office of
Vocational and Adult Education at the U.S. Department of Education.
Our $803,000 award will fund the implementation of a technical career
pathway into several identified occupations for students at Mott Middle
College High School over a five-year period. "This is the last round of
this funding, so I am delighted that we were able to secure one of these
prestigious awards," Judith said.
Faculty President/AQIP Coordinator Steve Robinson recently completed a higher education leadership course at the Harvard University
Graduate School of Education in Cambridge, Mass. Part of Harvard's
Institutes for Higher Education, the two-week residential program
focused on team effectiveness, financial analysis, legal issues and institutional planning. Steve also has AQIP-related news.
Steve wants us to mark your calendar for two important events: the
week of Sept. 26- Constellation Survey; Friday, Nov. 4 - Conversation
Day - the college will be closed for an all-day, all-employee dialogue in
Ballenger Fieldhouse. Additional information will be forthcoming.
From Financial Aid Director Carlos Cisneros and Financial Aid
Coordinator Suzanne Lossing: Every summer at the annual Michigan
Student Financial Aid Association Conference, a run/walk event is held
giving participants an opportunity to win the coveted "golden shoe."
The sector that has the most number of participants gets to hold it until
the next year. In memory of our beloved Kim, our Association colleagues renamed the event the Kim Fonger Memorial Run. "Thanks to
the recruiting efforts of Casey and Sue from our office, who were in
attendance at the conference, the two-year Community College sector
won the shoe back from the four-year public sector. Once we get the
shoe back we would like to entertain having the shoe placed in the
Fitness Center or somewhere appropriate," Carlos said.

of plants - my personal gratitude for your efforts. What a fantastic team
effort!"

providing the inspiration for the project and to Executive Director of
Marketing & Public Relations Michael Kelly for sponsoring the effort providing food and water for the workers. This project was funded

continuation of his Fulbright work taking place there over the past two
years. This summer, he is coordinating a National Jazz Education
Summit for the purpose of initiating a comprehensive jazz studies program at Tibiscus University there. The summit is being attended by both
experienced American and new Romanian jazz educators.
Dental Assisting Prof. Darlene Boersema attended ADEA's 38th
Annual National Allied Dental Directors' Conference June 11-14 in
Lake George, Bolton Landing, New York spending a "busy four days" at
the conference, which was entitled: "Coping With Change and Adopting
New Ideas-Envisioning the Future: Brutal Facts and Unshakeable
Beliefs. "Not only was the conference excellent, but the setting in the
Adirondacks was awesome," she said.
Academic Affairs Administrative Assistant Tiffani Schmidt is on a
winning team. This is the second year in a row her crew has won the
Budweiser Pro/Am fishing tournament. The tournament took place June
24-26 in Manistee. "We fish for salmon, lake trout, brown trout, and
steelhead," Tiffani said. "It's a two-day tournament that involves points
per fish and weight of fish. The most points/weight for the combined
two days wins." The name of their boat is (fittingly) "Fish'n Machine
II." Tiffani also participated in the ladies' "Powder Puff" contest for
women crews only on June 24. Fish'n Machine II took 5th place in that
event.

beautiful now and will only grow more lovely with time," Joyce said.
We can't thank you all enough for the help you have given. We would

Congratulations on your new positions and welcome to the MCC family!
Interpreter Training Coordinator Stevie Naeyaert just got back
from volunteer teaching for Family Literacy Week at DeSales in
Brooklyn, Michigan. “We had 12 families with deaf children and our
mission for that week was to give parents confidence in reading aloud in
ASL to their deaf/hard of hearing children at home,” Stevie said. “It’s
extremely important for deaf children to develop love of reading – since
reading the printed word is their only access to English. The week was
a huge success. DeSales is a resort and everyone slept there for a week.
Hearing parents of deaf children benefited from interacting with deaf
adults all week.” For more information about Desales, visit
www.desales.org and click on Deaf Programs and Family Literacy
Week.

New Latin American
Literature Course
MCC's English Department is currently offering the new literature
survey course entitled Latin American Literature (English 228) this Fall.
The course covers a variety of poetry and short stories from a wide ranging area: Mexico and the Caribbean through Central and South America,
and a very long time span, from ancient pre-Columbian texts to contemporary writers. The main text for the class will be Literature of Latin
America by Willis Barnstone.
"Latin American literature is wonderful, but it has been under-represented in traditional literature classes," said MCC English Professor
Kathleen Rollins, who developed the course along with MCC English
Professor Laura Tobias. "This class is meant to introduce readers to this
world. Students do not need to know how to speak Spanish or be from
Latin America to enjoy this material. These readings are part of our heritage in the Western Hemisphere."
The Latin American Literature course meets MCC's multicultural/multi-ethnic (MEC), humanities (HUM), and writing across the curriculum (WAC) requirements for graduation. It is scheduled for Tuesdays
and Thursdays at noon, Fall Semester 2005. Rollins been teaching literature
at MCC for over thirty years and will teach the class in the fall.
