Hispanic Outlook's Publisher Cites
MCC for Successful Outreach to
Hispanic Students
For the fifth year in a row, Mott Community College has received the thumbs-up from The
Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education. MCC made the magazine's "2006 Publisher's Picks" -- an
annual list of colleges and universities across the U.S. and Puerto Rico recognized for an ongoing
commitment to recruiting, educating and graduating Hispanic students.
This year's list represents the "latest and best thinking about which colleges and universities
offer Hispanic students a solid chance of academic success," stated Hispanic Outlook publisher Jose
Lopez-Isa in the Nov. 20, 2006 issue. "Expanding opportunities for Hispanics in higher education
has always been our passion and our focus."
The Hispanic Outlook is in its 17th year covering minority issues in higher education. Visit
their website at www.HispanicOutlook.com.
MCC Hosts First Wrestling Tournament
Wrestlers from top-notch programs from across the Midwest were
in Flint on Saturday Nov. 18 to join
Mott Community College's Wrestling
Bears as the club hosted its first invitational, the Mott Bears Open at Flint
Central Academy.
The tournament included a
cross-section of teams from the
National Collegiate Athletic
Association (NCAA) Division I,
Division II and Division III; National
Junior Collegiate Athletic Association
(NJCAA); and National Collegiate
Wrestling Association (NCWA).
"This is the first time in the history of wrestling in Flint that there
has been a college tournament," said
Paul Holdren, Coach of MCC's
Wrestling Bears. "This was also the
first wrestling tournament hosted by
an NCWA team that blended all divisions of college wrestlers."
The MCC Wrestling Bears are entering their fourth season. After three successive seasons of finishing in the National Collegiate Wrestling Association (NCWA) Top 20, the Bears are setting even
higher goals this season with hopes for a Top 5 finish. For more information about MCC's Wrestling
Bears, call (810) 241-9233, visit www.wrestlingbears.mcc.edu or email pholdren@edtech.mcc.edu.

Counselor Brian Ivory was co-facilitator (along with Ryan Fewins
from Michigan Campus Compact) for the Michigan Honors
Association Conference held Oct 7-8. The annual conference was
held in Roscommon at the MacMullan Conference Center and attended by 70 honors students and advisors from two and four-year honors
programs across the state. The theme of the conference was "Take the
Leadership Challenge." The conference chair was Heather Sisto,
who also serves as MHA Vice-President. Eight honors students also
attended the conference. English Profs. Larry Juchartz and Christy
Rishoi served as judges at the annual LAND Student Scholars
Conference on Sept.22. Dr. Juchartz and Kim Owens (Humanities)

Conference in November. Sisto asks faculty to encourage students to
submit researched essays for the LAND conference (via her office)
for submission for next year's conference. There are 17 categories
including Arts, Sciences, Business, Multi-cultural, and Psychology.
Three students from community colleges across Michigan are selected
in each category with a $100 prize for the final winner. She will
accept papers anytime during the academic year. Email Heather for
more information.

Chamber Music for Flute by Haitian Composers." The article focuses
on music by Haitian composers Werner Jaegerhuber (1900-1953) and
Julio Racine (b. 1945). Mary teaches and performs in Haiti each
summer and conducts research there on traditional and classical
Haitian music. She has also presented papers and given lecture

Dental Assisting Class
Visits Doyle Ryder
Presidents from Baker, Kettering, MCC and UM-Flint made remarks at the
Nov. 29 press conference held at the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, launching the agency’s annual food drive. Baker President Julianne Princinsky is
joined at the podium by UM-Flint Chancellor Juan Mestas, Kettering
University President Stan Liberty and MCC President Richard Shaink.
MCC's Nutrition and Preventive Dentistry Class, (Dental
Assisting 115) accompanied their instructor, local dentist Denise A.
Polk, D.D.S. to Doyle-Ryder to present a "mini-dental health fair" on
Nov. 17 to the first and second grade students at the school.
Dr. Polk makes annual school visits a special project for her dental assisting students, visiting a Flint area school each year since 1988.
The visits are part of an effort designed to help the dental assisting students learn how to promote the value of good dental health. The school
visits also give her dental assisting students an excellent opportunity to
practice effective communication skills, she said.
"Students need this exercise in communicating and educating the
benefits of good oral health care, but they also have a wonderful time
with this project," Dr. Polk said.
Holiday Food Drive
Mott Community College has joined Baker College, Kettering
University and the University of Michigan-Flint in launching a Holiday
Food Drive with donations to benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
The food bank kicked off its annual holiday fundraising campaign on
Wednesday, Nov. 29, with a press conference at its headquarters, 2310
Lapeer Road in Flint. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan needs our help,
now more than ever. Consider these statistics:
• According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 32.5 percent of people in
Flint live in poverty (Flint became the poorest city in Michigan in
2005).
• The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan reports that 75 percent of
people using the food bank have incomes below the poverty level.
• 40 percent of homes in which the food bank is used have at least
one working adult
• 33 percent of food bank users must choose between buying food
or paying utilities
We need to be mindful of the fact that hunger and poverty in America
is on the rise, and has hit home. The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan really needs our help to accommodate the increasing need in our community.
MCC, Baker, Kettering and UM-Flint are also engaging in a friendly
competition to see which institution can donate the most money and items
for the food bank. The school raising the most money and items will
receive a traveling trophy that will be handed off to next year's winner.
The Holiday Food Drive will continue through December 15. In
addition to cash donations, suggested food drive items include: non-perishable foods such as canned goods, baking mixes, pastas, sauces, cereals,
and spices; personal care products such as shampoo, soap, deodorant, and
toilet paper. MCC drop-off points for donations are: Prahl College Center
Public Safety Mini-Station; Lobby of the Public Safety Department;
Science & Math Office, 1001 Gorman; Continuing Education Office and
the Regional Technology Center Lobby. Please feel free to call Public
Safety at 762-0222 to ask for boxes that can be located in your area for
dropping off donations.
Let’s make this Holiday Food Drive a huge success. Please don’t hesitate to call Public Safety at 762-0222 if you have questions.

Ribbon Cutting for New
Northern Tier Center
Location Set for Jan. 8
The excitement is building (no pun intended!) as Mott Community
College prepares to open the doors of the new location for the
Northern Tier Center! The building is scheduled to be completed
before the holiday break and will be ready for students for the Winter
2007 semester. The new site is located at 4082 W. Vienna Road, Clio,
Michigan in the Vienna Square Plaza between Jennings Road and I-75.
The College spent between $1.5 million-$2 million in bond proceeds and other available funds to renovate about 18,000 square feet of
the building. The new site features seven spacious and technological
equipped classrooms, a large administrative office area, a large Faculty
Office, a Counseling Office, a Campus Security Office, plenty of convenient parking, and much more!
"The new facility will provide a more collegiate environment—
one that is more conducive to successful student learning, said Desiree
Londrigan, NTC Site Coordinator. "In addition, the facility will also
allow MCC to offer a wider variety of classes for students living in
Northern Genesee County." For more information about the Northern
Tier Center, call (810) 232-8044.
Everyone is invited to the NTC Rededication/Ribbon Cutting
Ceremony, Monday, Jan. 8, 2007; 5:30-7:30 pm and will have an
opportunity to tour the new facility, enjoy the refreshments, exhibits
and entertainments.
