More than 1,000 people from across the region traveled to campus
to hear Lech Walesa speaking for the April 5 installment of MCC's
Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series. Walesa, leader of Poland's
Solidarity --the movement that brought down the Iron Curtain -- was
well-received: greeted with a standing ovation upon his entrance, as
well as thunderous applause and standing ovations throughout his
address. The free, public presentation, made possible through the
William S. Ballenger Trust, also garnered widespread media coverage.
After the lecture, MCC President Richard Shaink and Board Vice Chair
John Snell presented Walesa with an honorary degree from MCC.
