Roosevelt Capacity Crowd fills Ballenger Field House for Lech Walesa More than 1,000 people from across the region traveled to campus to hear Lech Walesa speaking for the April 5 installment of MCC's Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series. Walesa, leader of Poland's Solidarity --the movement that brought down the Iron Curtain -- was well-received: greeted with a standing ovation upon his entrance, as well as thunderous applause and standing ovations throughout his address. The free, public presentation, made possible through the William S. Ballenger Trust, also garnered widespread media coverage. After the lecture, MCC President Richard Shaink and Board Vice Chair John Snell presented Walesa with an honorary degree from MCC. Nursing Program Kicking Off 50th Anniversary Mott Community College is celebrating 50 years of educating nurses for the Flint area. A Spring Reception to kick-off the 50th anniversary, which also coincides with National Nurses Week May 6-12, is scheduled for 2-4 pm Thursday, May 11 at Applewood Cafe. The theme selected to commemorate the nursing program reaching the halfcentury mark is "Bridging the Past to the Future." The Nursing Program's 50th Anniversary planning committee is seeking information on alumni to recognize them in upcoming events. Summer Camps at MCC MCC offers a variety of summer camp experiences for area youth each year. Listed is information on programs that are currently recruiting campers. The Virtual Simulation Camp held at MCC's Regional Technology Center gives middle and high school students experience with state-of-the-art simulation software used by real world product designers. This camp is for students in grade six through high school. Camp sessions are Intro and Advanced. Intro for first time enrollees is June 19-23. Advanced, for participants who completed last year's camp or the Intro program, is scheduled June 26-June 30. Cost is $100 per person, per level with lunch provided. The deadline to enroll is Friday, June 16. Enrollment is limited. Call 762-0278 for details or to enroll. The Jim Lee Fine Arts Camp, a two-week intensive camp experience for students in grades 7-12, is scheduled July 10-21. Campers can participate in the Visual Arts program or music sessions: Concert Band, Guitar, Piano, String Instruments and Steel Band. Cost is $195. This fee can be lowered in various ways. Around Campus MCC was recently selected as the recipient of a Donald M. Whaley Shining Star Award from the Board of Directors of Whaley Children's Center. Athletic Director Tom Healey and Men's Basketball Coach/Assistant Atheltic Director Steve Schmidt represented MCC at the March 28 program where the awards were presented. "We deeply appreciate your commitment and generosity. Without the dedication of people like you, we could not touch the lives of children impacted by abuse and neglect," stated Whaley President/CEO Raquel Hatter. Congratulations to Educational Systems Manager Chris Bolla and his wife. They welcomed Rachel Ann Bolla to the world at 3:30 am, Friday, April 21. Rachel weighed 6 pounds, one ounce and was 19 inches long at birth. Mother and daughter are doing well. From Recruiter/Outreach & Retention Specialist Beth Cianek comes a report on Admissions/Student Life activities. The Third Annual Student/Club Recognition Program was held April 21. This year's winners include Club of Year: LERN Club, Dr. Avon Burns, Advisor; Student Government Leader of the Year: Leonta Smith; Student Leader of the Year: Rebecca Lane; and Advisor of the Year: Suzanne Lossing (Environmental Club). On Friday, March 24, a fashion show titled "Executive Express" was held in the MMB Auditorium by three MCC student clubs. More than 45 MCC students modeled outfits from 17 participating area clothing stores. A number of MCC employees made the show successful, including Tony Caldwell, club advisor for the MCC Cheerleaders and Ballroomers; Admissions Director & Recruitment Executive Director Marc Payne, club advisor to the Rites of Passage Club, along with guest modeling appearances by Admissions & Recruitment Administrative Assistant Regina Broomfield, Foundation for MCC President Lennetta Coney, Counselor Angela Reeves and Automotive Technology Secretary Marcia Teer. Marcia also contributed her graphic art talents to developing the well- received program and ad booklet. Mott Middle College Instructor and Wrestling Bears Coach Paul Holdren will hold the Second Annual Wrestling Day on Wed., May 10 at 9:30 am in the RTC Auditorium. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about MCC's Wrestling Team. Dental Assisting Class Advisor Kelly Roos and members of MCC's 2006 Dental Assisting Class hosted an open house at the Dental Assisting Clinic on March 8 to honor Dental Assistants Recognition Week, which was March 5-11. Children were given "rides" in the dental chair, explored dental equipment and materials and "dressed up" in dental clinical attire. Orthodontic Specialist Charles W. Munk, D.D.S. showed his support of this special event by volunteering his time to examine the "little visitors" teeth, Kelly said. "This fun-filled event was a huge success and a rewarding experience for all!" Police Technician Beverly Davis recently completed Evidence Technician School at Oakland Police Academy. Captain Theresa Lock recently attended Police and Staff Command School in Harrison, Mich. On Monday, April 3 Music Prof. Mari Yancho and several of her students from the Guitar Classes and Ensemble attended a master class given by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet. The LAGQ is recognized worldwide as one of the finest Classical guitar quartets today. This was held at Wayne State University. Kyle Canjar, a former Classical guitar major at MCC, was one of the performing members with the WSU Ensemble. Here's news from MCC Lapeer Extension Site Director Wanda Dowdall. MCC-Lapeer student Briana Boxey won the $25 Meijer gift card given at a recent MCC-Lapeer American Red Cross blood drive. The blood drive netted 35 pints of blood. The MCC-Lapeer student body was recently treated by staff to a "Student Appreciation Day." The staff cooked hotdogs and provided free sodas. A variety of free chips was supplied by Coley Vending Service. More great news: The site is concluding the largest semester enrollment in the history of its existence. She took a group of students to the Dallas Society of Visual Communications Student Show & Conference in Dallas, Texas March 30-April 2. Painting Professor John Dempsey is showing his work in the exhibition "Short Sharp Shook" at Buckham Gallery in downtown Flint through May 6. The work of Ceramics Professor Thom Bohnert is being shown at the Dennos Museum Center at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City through Aug. 6. The exhibition, entitled "Gift of the Artist: Selections from the Collections" is being presented in recognition of the artists who have shared their creative efforts by gifting their own work to the collections. The MCC jazz program presented a series of jazz concerts in April as part of the Smithsonian's Annual Jazz Appreciation Month. The event was organized by Music Professor Chuck Iwanusa, instructors Tom Smith, Frank Yon and Jim Coviak, with their student groups all participating. A big thank-you to the various groups for performing for many of the college receptions, including the Lech Walesa Ballenger Lecture Series, the Student Employee Recognition Luncheon, the Spring Reception, the Honors Reception and the Honors Program Dinner. New Century Chorale is presenting the spring concert "In Tune With America" on May 6 at 7 pm and May 7 at 4 pm at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Grand Blanc. MCC Cheerleaders took first place at the Spring Cheerfest Open Nationals held in Myrtle Beach, SC on April 8. MCC's team captured first place in the college dance portion of the competition and was presented with the first place trophy and a national championship banner. Flint's Ed Donovan speaks to national, state and local economic leaders at MCC's RTC on April 18 to discuss the new Workforce Innovation in Regional Economic Development (WIRED) project. MCC is playing a major regional role in this project and hosted Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor Emily DeRocco among other luminaries at the event. Mott Ballroomers Club Advisor and Mailroom Technician El Nita Blount has great news to report on the Mott Ball Roomers/Steppers. On April 1, club members Feo Duncan and Candace Hinton competed in a steppers contest against seven couples and placed first in this contest, winning a pair of trophies and a cash prize of $1,000. The contest, called the Grand Midwest Steppers Battle III, was held in Rockford, Ill. A steppers set was also held on April 14 in their honor at Flint's Vet's Club. Our first place couple then traveled to Detroit to compete in a Steppers battle on April 22 after R & B Recording Artist R. Kelly's concert, where Kelly was one of the judges. The contest was held at The Fine Arts Theatre on Woodward in Detroit. Feo and Candace took first place, bringing home a huge (over four feet) trophy and a cash prize of $1,000. From Marketing's Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez, advisor of the MCC Gardening Association: The group recently received a $500 mini-grant from Keep Genesee County Beautiful to add native plants to Gilkey Creek along Horrigan drive. Student and Administrative Services VP Scott Jenkins has also awarded the group with matching funds. Clean-ups will begin this month in preparation for June planting. In other news, the MCCGA will perform gardening tasks in the Prahl College Center Courtyard and Traingle gardens on Friday, May 5 from 12:30 to 1 pm. Respiratory Therapy Coordinator David Panzlau is organizing the MCC Easy Breathers Walk Team for the Blow The Whistle on Asthma Walk scheduled for Saturday May 6 in Bicentennial Park, Grand Blanc. Registration begins at 9 am with the Walk starting at 10 am. This walk supports the research, education and advocacy initiatives of the American Lung Association. English Prof. Christy Rishoi had an essay recently re-published in a volume titled Contemporary Literary Criticism, published by ThomsonGale, titled "Specifying American Girlhood: Annie Dillard and Anne Moody." It is a chapter from her 2003 book, From Girl to Woman: The American Woman's Coming-of-Age Narratives. Sign Language Interpreter Education Instructor Isabell Florence's daughter, Erin earned a Superior Rating in both guitar and piano competitions at Hillsdale University on March 3 and 4. This competition included students from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and Michigan. On May 10-14, Erin will compete with students from all over the U.S. at Olivet University in Illinois. "It's exciting and scary at the same time," Isabell noted. Athletics' Secretary Donna Yon tells us that MCC's Golf team is doing very well again this year. Here are the standings so far (with four more games to go before State tournaments as of this writing). MCC is ranked #1 in Michigan for Division II and ranked #4 in the Nation. In our Division-Joey Stimac is ranked the #1 player in Michigan and #4 in the Nation; Chaz Meek is ranked as the #2 player in Michigan and #12 in the Nation; Dave Struder Jr. is ranked #6 in Michigan and Jonathan Schlinker is ranked #9 in Michigan. Art Competition MCC and Cleary Collaborate on Bachelor Degree Cleary University is launching a new collaboration with MCC that will offer a new college option to area students. Cleary President Thomas P. Sullivan and MCC President M. Richard Shaink signed an agreement on April 11 to offer Cleary University's Bachelor Degree in Business Management on MCC's Flint campus beginning this May. The Cleary program, at the University Center, enables prospective students with an associate degree or equivalent credits to complete a bachelor degree in business management in as little as 13 months. MCC is announcing a Call for Entries for its show titled "810: Wish U Were Here" which is open to any high school or college student in Genesee County. "Entrants don't have to be Art students, they just have to feel compelled to create art," said MCC Art & Graphic Design Coordinator Mara Jevera Fulmer. "It challenges them to create artwork in response to the FIA's show." Entries for "810: Wish U Were Here" are due at the MCC Visual Arts Design Center (VADC) Room 100 by June 2.
