Martin Luther King, Jr.
Civil Rights Attorney Morris Dees
to Speak at MCC Oct. 4
MCC will welcome Morris Dees, prominent civil rights
lawyer and longtime advocate for victims of hate crimes and
racial injustice, to campus for the second installment of
MCC's 2007 Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series. The
program is scheduled for 7 pm Thursday, Oct. 4 in the
Ballenger Field House. Sponsored by the Ballenger Trust, this
program is free and open to the public. Dees is co-founder and
chief trial counsel of the Southern Poverty Law Center
(SPLC), a non-profit organization that is internationally
renowned for its dedication to combating racism and injustice,
as well as promoting tolerance and equality through research,
education and litigation. Under Dees' leadership, the SPLC
has achieved a number of significant legal victories against
white supremacists and racist hate groups, netting landmark
damage awards that have crippled several of these organizations, including the Ku Klux Klan (KKK),
Aryan nations and Neo-Nazi groups. For more information, call the Foundation for Mott Community
College at (810) 762-0425.

Here's news from the Business Division. Dean Bob Loth, Profs.
Beverly Bliesath and Paul Londrigan presented the Association of
Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) initial accreditation
at the September Board of Trustees Meeting. Their presentation focused
on the process followed to achieve the initial accreditation, the impact of
the accreditation on students and the College, and the comments we are to
work on for the next three years in order to achieve a 10-year accreditation from ACBSP. Prof. Bettie L. Goodman attended the 79th
International Society of Business Educators International Conference in
Vienna, Austria July 29 – Aug. 3, 2007. The Conference theme was
"Innovation in Business Education." The program included lectures on

topics in business education and strategies for teaching different learning
styles. Participants exchanged experiences and learned from each other.

From Lapeer Extension Site Director Wanda Dowdall: A recent
American Red Cross blood drive held at the MCC Lapeer location was a
huge success. "Thanks to the support of Lapeer faculty, the goal was
exceeded by 25 pints of blood," Wanda said. "The drive ended early
because the Red Cross ran out of collection bags. There were 30 firsttime-donors -- a record for Lapeer. The support of the drive by Lapeer
faculty was the difference."
Health Services Counselor Sharee Tolbert lets us know that MCC's
blood and bone marrow registry drives on the main campus were also
successful. Faculty, staff, and students came out to donate and in record
numbers. Thank you to everyone who donated, and wanted to donate but
were unable to due to various reasons. The results of the blood drive
follows: Blood donors: 47 (out of 47 donors, 31 were productive (this will
help 93 people). Bone Marrow drive: 40 people signed up for the bone
marrow registry. Thank you to the following individuals for assisting with
this event: Andrea Chandler, Health Services; Kathy Burton and Mary
Meeker, Events Office; Dawn Vanniman, Student Life; Webmaster
John Tyler and Public Safety staff.
From Mott Library Executive Director Denise Hooks: Kudos to
Mott Library Manager Mike Ugorowski, who will be presenting at a
breakout session with Washtenaw Community College Librarian Sandy
McCarthy during the 2007 Educational Teleconsortium of Michigan
(ETOM) conference hosted at MCC on Oct. 12. Their topic will be
Virtual Reference in the Academic Library. In related news, Reference
Librarian Diana Hiles has had two of her online transcripts, an online reference session between librarian and student, chosen for the "Virtual
Reference Transcript of the Year" award. Both of the virtual reference
sessions were in the top 50 out of nearly 2,000 virtual reference sessions

China Blue
Throughout the 1990's, civil war uprooted the people of Sierra
Leone, yet out of the refugee camps came the musical group "Sierra
Leone's Refugee All Stars." This film will also be shown Sunday,
Oct. 21 at UM-Flint's KIVA at 2 pm.
This film is a clandestinely shot, deep-access account of how the
clothes we buy are actually made. Following a pair of denim jeans
from birth to sale, this is a rare, human glimpse at China's rapid
transformation into a free market society.
Friday, Oct. 19, 7:30 pm
Tambogrande: Mangos, Murder and Mining
Saturday, Oct. 20, 5 pm
Unrepentant
In 1999, the residents of this small town in northern Peru successfully fought a plan to open-pit mine and relocate their famous fruit
orchards. This is a story that demonstrates how ordinary people can
defeat government and corporate collusion.
Unrepentant documents the "deliberate and systematic extermination" of non-Christian indigenous people within the Indian residential school system by the Catholic, United, Presbyterian and
Anglican churches, in collusion with the Canadian federal government. Kevin Annett, the producer of Unrepentant, will attend this
5 pm showing.
Saturday Oct. 20, 1 pm
Forever
Forever is the story of an old cemetery in Paris, France about the
historic people buried there and people from all over the world who
visit there.
