MCC Hosts Open House to Celebrate
GM 100th Anniversary
Mott Community College's Regional
Technology Center welcomed the public to an open
house on Thursday, July 17 in honor of General
Motors 100th Anniversary Celebration. MCC
joined a host of institutions and agencies throughout the community with several activities and
events planned to recognize GM's centennial.
Faculty and staff from the various departments
housed in the RTC were on hand to greet visitors,
to give tours of the facility and to provide information on special displays and various programs
offered by MCC's technology division.
The open house featured a demonstration of
the Smart machines being used in industry today,
such as the flexible Manufacturing Cell and rapid
prototyping systems, and several displays, including the Sloan Buick Gallery Apprenticeship display.
Select students from MCC's Auto Body program
have been able to gain valuable skills in the art of
automobile restoration. The Studebaker Club and
the Buick Drivers Club have made it possible for
students to work as apprentices at the Buick Auto
Gallery. A restored Studebaker and a restored
Buick, along with information about the apprenticeship, and a display featuring the Factory Five MK3
Roadster "Cobra" Build Class, were also showcased at the event.
MCC has the only Factory Five build school in
the country. Every month, students gather at MCC's
Livingston Center to learn how to build a Factory
Five vehicle in a three-day build school. Visitors
were able to view a sample of the finished MK3
Roadster as well as one in progress. For details
about GM's 100th anniversary, visit
http://www.flintgm100.com/events.html.

National Publication Cites MCC for succesful
graduation rates for African-American Students
MCC has received recognition from Community College Week, a
national publication serving community, technical and junior colleges,
for achieving noteworthy graduation rates of African-American students.
MCC made Community College Week's 2008 list of the nation's
"Top 100 Associate Degree Producers" in the category of "Associate
Degrees: All Disciplines for Black students."
Each year, Community College Week releases a special report featuring the Top 100 degree and certificate producing two-year institutions.
The big picture, as stated in the June 16, 2008 issue of the magazine's
cover story about the Top 100 Associate degree producers, is simply this:
colleges are seeing major increases in Associate degree production.
According to a Community College Weekly analysis, the demand for
Associate degrees has been rising in recent years, along with records of
huge increases in the number of degrees awarded. In the article entitled
"Analyzing the Numbers," Victor M.H. Borden, associate vice president
and associate professor at Indiana University, stated: "Community colleges continue to serve a diverse array of students, offering a wide variety of courses of study."
Borden noted that over the last 10 years, a 31 percent increase in
the number of Associate degrees has been conferred.
For the annual report of top degree producers, Community College
Week used data reported by institutions to the Integrated Postsecondary
Education Data System, which is run by the National Center for
Education Statistics.
Community College Week is published bi-weekly with offices based
in Fairfax, Va. Community College Week's readership includes college
presidents, chief academic officers, faculty, student service professionals,
librarians and other educators. Each edition includes news, features and
analyses of academic trends and issues, as well as vital statistics and
technology updates. For more information, visit www.ccweek.com.
