through Sept. 8, 2008. The Museum will host an opening reception

Mott Library Services Director Denise Hooks has news from
her area. Several months ago, Reference and Archives Librarian
Diana Hiles provided information from the College Archives to
Emily Zilber, Graham Collections Fellow at Cranbrook Art
Museum. Cranbrook is doing a book and exhibit on Richard
DeVore, a former instructor in the Department of Ceramics at Flint
Junior College, from 1957 to 1966. "Ms. Zilber’s reaction upon
receiving the materials indicated that Diana’s work was outstanding." Denise added. "She said, 'I received the DeVore CD yesterday, and have just had the chance to look at it this morning - what
a treasure trove of information! Thank you again for your time and
effort on the project.' " Richard DeVore: Retrospective and "Last
Works" runs from June 14 to Sept. 14, 2008 at the Cranbrook Art
Museum, 39221 Woodward Avenue, Bloomfield Hills.
Prof. Bettie L. Goodman of the Business Division, attended
the 2008 National Business Education Association Annual
Convention in San Antonio, Texas from March 19-22, 2008. This
convention, composed of business educators throughout the U.S.
and several foreign countries, including Poland, Canada, Ireland
and the Faroe Islands, had approximately 1,900 in attendance. The
convention theme was “Educating for Success in Business and
Life,” and Prof. Goodman attended more than 15 sessions.
Keynote speakers included John Kasich, host of the Heartland on
the FOX News Channel; William C. Bosher, Distinguished
Professor of Public Policy and Education and the Executive
Director of the Commonwealth Policy Institute, and LaDonna
Gatlin, a motivational speaker who grew up on stage singing with
her brothers -- the legendary Gatlin Brothers. Some of the most
interesting sessions and those that Prof. Goodman found useful for
classroom instructions were: “Creative Teaching Strategies: What
We Have for You and What You Can Give to Others;” “Microsoft
Office 2007: Tips and Tricks;” “Online Course Delivery;”
“International Experiential Learning;” and “Motivating Students:
What You Can Do Monday.” Prof. Goodman was presented with
the Past President Plaque in appreciation for her leadership and
service to the International Society for Business Education from
2006 – 2008. She was the first African American to serve in this
capacity for this organization.
Mike Glynn, Livingston Center site director, completed the
Leadership Livingston program hosted by Cleary University,
Howell. Mike and 13 other community leaders participated in the
nine-month program that began last September. Each monthly session addressed a specific community issue, including the nature of
leadership, leadership in action, education; health and human services; the justice system; local and state government and the challenges to the future of Livingston County. Mike led four other
members of the group in a Community Service Project as part of
an inmate literacy initiative. The group recorded inmates of the
Livingston County Jail reading a book they had written titled,
“Sweet Dreams.” Two copies of the book, crayons to color the
illustrations, a portable CD player and an audio CD were then
delivered to the inmates' children. After the child colored the illustrations, one of the books was returned to the jailed parent. The
project was designed to help bridge the gap created between a parent and child when the parent is incarcerated for an extended period of time. For more information about the program, please call or
email Janet Filip at (734) 929-9107 or jfilip@cleary.edu. You can
also visit the website at www.leadershiplivingston.org.
