Human Resources Around Campus Staffing Manager Sharon Ewles tells us about a new employee in Human Resources. Ronda Hitchcock, Supervisor – HR Services, started work on Feb. 18. Ronda will be working in the position held by Kate Schamanek. When Kate returns from maternity leave, she'll be working part-time with Sharon in Staffing. Ronda, a hearty welcome to you from the MCC family! Business Professor Barbara Schulz, supervisor of Ellen's Closet, lets us know that Ellen's Closet had a successful year. Ellen's Closet provides free professional attire to MCC women students. According to the Ellen’s Closet Donation/Distribution Summary for the 2007 calendar year, the donations totaled 1,016 pieces of clothing and accessories; total distributions for 2007: 965 pieces of clothing and accessories. "During 2007, we have had more than just students come in to receive clothing," she adds. "We recently started getting women from the YWCA. We are glad to help anyone that may be in need of new clothing. We have found that most of the women who come to Ellen's Closet have no clothing when they get to the YWCA. Many students are realizing what a wonderful program this is for them. Some students were somewhat unsure about coming in to Ellen's Closet, but have changed their behavior once they realize that for an interview they can get a $300 suit, which was totally outside their budget." Here's more news from the Business Division. Dean Robert Loth tells us that the cosmetology program has been involved in many activities this semester. Cosmetology Instructor Andrea Blankinship participated as a subject matter expert to review material, content, and readability for both practical and theory State Board Exams in Cosmetology, Nail Technology, Esthetics and Electrology in Grand Rapids on Feb. 6 and 7. In addition, Andrea and Adjunct Esthetics Instructor Susan Kolar were selected to review the latest edition of the 2008 Milady Standard Cosmetology textbook. This textbook is used nationally and will be implemented into our cosmetology program this spring semester. Acknowledgement of their participation is recorded in the beginning pages of this textbook. Several cosmetology students performed manicures on the participants of the annual “Wine, Women, and Chocolate” event on Feb. 9 at Brookwood Golf Club This function is sponsored by the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Flint. This is our second year of participation. About 18 students provided hairstyles, manicures, makeup, and eyebrow waxing to approximately 25 mothers for their annual “Pamper Day” Feb. 11 at the Bristol Road Church of Christ “MOPS” (Mothers of Preschoolers) program. We have participated in this event annually for the past five years. On Feb. 14 at Grand Blanc Rehabilitation and Nursing Home (Riverbend), 27 students provided hairstyles, manicure, and makeup on approximately 40 residents for their annual “Valentine’s Day Ball.” This is also an annual event that we have participated in for the past seven years. Special groups come to our lab for services throughout the semester for haircuts, hairstyles, and manicures. This two-year program prepares students to enter the Auto Body repair industry. A rapid growth area in the industry is restoration of old vehicles. The Sloan Museum is giving our students a unique opportunity to experience a real restoration project, ultimately preparing them for work in this sector of the industry. The Studebaker Club, a group of Studebaker Car owners concerned about the future of antique care restoration, approached MCC and offered to financially assist us in starting an apprenticeship program, sponsoring a position in the Restoration Shop at Sloan Museum. Jerry Whitney accompanied John to a meeting held by the Studebaker Club at the Buick Gallery on Saturday Feb. 23 and received a check for the restoration program. "We hope to get other sponsorships from Clubs or Foundations to keep the apprenticeship going," adds John. "There is a significant restoration market that needs good people. It's a great opportunity for our students. It is also great PR for MCC and its relationship to Sloan and the Cultural Center." AARP Forum to Benefit "50+ Worker" at MCC March 12 MCC Continuing Education is teaming up with AARP Michigan and the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth in presenting a free informational forum that will provide a comprehensive look at opportunities for employers and workers at age 50 and beyond. The forum, "Work at 50-Plus: New Age of Possibility and Purpose" will be Wednesday, March 12 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the MCC Events Center, adjacent to the Mott Library. Findings from AARP research suggest the number of workers age 50 and older is increasing. According to estimates provided by AARP, nearly 20 percent of the workforce will be age 55 and older in 2012, an increase from 13 percent in 2000. In addition, 68 percent of workers over the age of 50, who have not yet retired, say they plan to work in some capacity into their retirement years or not retire at all. For more information about AARP and 50+ workers, visit the website at www.aarp.org/money/careers. What’s New @ www.mcc.edu The www.mcc.edu website is continually updated in order to maintain fresh, up-to-date information and to better serve our many web users. Following is a list of updates and improvements. The Management Information Systems Help Desk has a new web page which is accessible from the Faculty/Staff keypath. Links are provided for downloading frequently needed programs including Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player and the Office 2007 converter. This page provides an excellent outline for the types of issues that the Help Desk can address. There are also easy links for COGNOS Job Aids, Email Tutorials and Tips and Telecom Instructions. The Telecom Instructions page has also been updated with illustrations of the various types of phone sets used at Mott Community College. It is much easier to select the telephone that looks like the unit on your desk than to try to remember the numeric name for your phone. The Faculty/Staff page was rearranged to make it easier to find information. The top tabs are sorted according to Faculty Resources, Divisions and Departments, Information, Educational Systems, and Job Aids. The second section contains all of the links for Management Information Systems including off-campus access to your email and the secure log-in page. The bottom section is titled Communications Resource Center. Access to the Directory, Events Calendar and emergency numbers are conveniently located together. Also, please remember, each web page has a “Page Change” button. This feature allows immediate communication to add, clarify or revise information. Input from our web users on this MIS page, or any other web page, is always appreciated. Full-time Faculty Job Opportunities The Office of Human Resources will be posting several fulltime faculty positions within the near future. Once the postings are open, faculty and staff will be notified via the campus-wide email system.
