MCC President Attends President
Obama's Town Hall Meeting
President Barack Obama chose a Michigan community
college as his stage to unveil an ambitious initiative to help the
nation's two-year colleges, and MCC President Dick Shaink was
on hand for the announcement. During a town hall meeting held
on Tuesday, July 14 at Macomb Community College in Warren,
the President announced the American Graduation Initiative, a
proposal to spend $12 billion on community colleges, an effort
specifically designed to help with retraining the unemployed for
jobs of the future.
"Community colleges are an essential part of our recovery in
the present and our prosperity in the future," Obama told the audience gathered at Macomb Community College. "Community
colleges are an undervalued asset in our country. Not only is that
not right, it's not smart."
Dr. Shaink was among community college leaders across the
state thrilled with the announcement.
"Anytime you have the President of the United States tout the
advantages of community colleges, that's a good thing," Dr.
Shaink stated. "The jobs of the future are going to require having a college degree. Now is the time to
start getting it."
MCC Board of Trustees

replacing Fr. James Bettendorf. Fr.
Bettendorf, Andrew Everman and Sally

Foundation for MCC Events
Administrators with MCC and Eastern Michigan University came
together on the MCC main campus on Thursday, July 9 to formalize an
agreement that will allow for the seamless transition of students seeking
bachelor degrees in cutting edge fields at EMU. A special signing ceremony was held in the Regional Technology Center auditorium to formalize the creation of three new articulation agreements with Eastern
Michigan University. These agreements will allow students to take up to
94 credits of coursework at MCC to transfer into one of three bachelor
degree programs at EMU: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of
Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Technology
Management. Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science in
Business Management, General Business or Accounting, can transfer to
EMU to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration. Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing can transfer to EMU to
pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Students receiving an
Associate in Applied Science degree from MCC in several programs,
from Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology to Culinary
Arts, from Graphic Design to Web Development, can transfer to EMU to
pursue a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management degree.
Articulation agreements specify a course taking plan, ultimately resulting
in a seamless transfer of credits for students to their chosen program of
study at a four-year educational institution. MCC has articulation agreements with more than a dozen universities in Michigan that allow transfer
credits from MCC in more than 50 programs.
