During a town hall meeting held on Tuesday, July 14 at Macomb Community College in Warren, the President announced the American Graduation Initiative, a proposal to spend $12 billion on community colleges, an effort specifically designed to help with retraining the unemployed for jobs of the future. "Community colleges are an essential part of our recovery in the present and our prosperity in the future," Obama told the audience gathered at Macomb Community College. "Community colleges are an undervalued asset in our country. Not only is that not right, it's not smart." Dr. Shaink was among community college leaders across the state thrilled with the announcement. "Anytime you have the President of the United States tout the advantages of community colleges, that's a good thing," Dr. Shaink stated. "The jobs of the future are going to require having a college degree. Now is the time to start getting it." MCC Board of Trustees Elects Officers The Board of Trustees elected its officers in a special re-organizational meeting held on July 7. Lenore Croudy will retain her position as Chairperson of the board. John Snell and Albert Koegel will also keep their seats as Vice Chairperson and Treasurer, respectively. Celia Turner will now serve as Secretary, replacing Fr. James Bettendorf. Fr. Bettendorf, Andrew Everman and Sally Shaheen Joseph will continue to serve as trustees on the MCC board. MCC Alumni Homecoming Celebration Set for August 28-29 An exciting, fun-filled weekend is planned for MCC alumni, family and friends on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29 at the MCC Alumni Homecoming Celebration. Attendees will have an excellent opportunity to reconnect with professors and fellow alums from the days when Mott Community College was Flint Junior College, Flint Community College or Genesee Community College. Dr. Hadeer Abo El Nagah has confirmed her willingness to participate in this Fulbright Visiting Specialist Program at MCC. "Dr. Hadeer comes from Egypt and is very much looking forward to joining our faculty for this program from Monday Sept. 14 to Friday, Oct. 23, 2009," Bill said. Additional details will be forthcoming. Adjunct English professor Wendy Byard, author of Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching With Love," will speak on "Crime Scene," a radio and TV show hosted by Lapeer County Prosecutor Byron Konschuh, on Friday, Aug. 21 from 11 am to 12 noon. The show's panelists will discuss issues that affect the well-being of the community. The show will air on radio channel WLCO 1530 AM. It also will be broadcast on Charter Cable Channel 19 in Lapeer. In addition, Wendy will be holding book signings in August and September. She will hold "Back to School" book signings at Lapeer's downtown store, the Book Shelf on Monday, Aug. 31, 13 pm; Tuesday, Sept. 1, 10 am - noon and Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 1-3 pm. Respiratory Therapy Prof. Dave Panzlau lets us know that the Respiratory Program is happy and proud to report that the most recent graduating class has a pass rate of 100% for the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) Exam. There were 17 students in the graduating class of 2009 and all students were successful by June 30 Arou n of this year. This examination is used by the State of Michigan as a requirement to obtain a license to practice as a Respiratory Therapist. Accounting Prof. Alana Ferguson was recently appointed as a candidate and approved for the 2009/2010 online Cambridge Who's Who Registry among Executive and Professional Women. Humanities Dean Patricia Bergh brings news from the Humanities Division. On Friday and Saturday, June 19 and 20, MCC's Interpreter Training Program hosted a workshop conducted by Cheri Smith and Ken Mikas who conducted training sessions for their new "Signing Naturally" curriculum. Interpreter Program Coordinator Stevie Naeyaert reported that MCC was one of the three sites across the country where training was held. Over 32 participants attended, including individuals who traveled from as far as Minnesota, Massachusetts, California, Texas, Florida and Indiana. Another 10 people were on a waiting list. On Friday evening, the participants toured the Michigan School for the Deaf's 150 year old Superintendent's Cottage, some went to our local deaf club and others went to the Deaf Professional Happy Hour in Pontiac. Thanks to the generous funding from the Foundation for MCC, the annual Creative Expressions Camp was held again this year in July. Those attending the camp ranged from 8 to 14 years old and participated in various art and writing activities. The event was coordinated by Jackie Knoll, Assistant Professor of English. Other Humanities faculty leading sessions were Paula Weston, Mawusi Johnstone, and Sounya Walker. The Hispanic Technology and Community Center will hold its 6th annual Community Fun Day, Aug. 29, from 12 pm to 4 pm at the Center, located at 2101 Lewis St. in Flint. New Employee: MCC welcomes Debra Reich, Staff Assistant III – Technology in the Technology Division, start date: July 27, 2009. Creative Expression Camp Assistant English professor Jackie Knoll coordinated this year's fourth annual Creative Expressions Camp, which took place July 22-24. A total of 24 campers, ages 8-14, attended this year. Humanities faculty Paula Weston, Mawusi Johnstone, and Sounya Walker taught creative writing workshops featuring themes such as graphic novels, poetry from a visual image, and personal speeches using PowerPoint. MCC graduate Abbie Lemmon also taught a session on writing scary stories and additionally, many MCC student and community member assistants lent their skills, including Abbie Lemmon, Destiny Sohlden, Joshua Griffin, Monica Ingram, Miranda Manne, Suzette Lee, Rose Tobias and Ben Graham. The camp culminated in a reception on Friday, July 24, in Gorman Auditorium, where campers presented their work to their families and friends. The camp is generously funded by the Foundation for Mott Community College. Eastern Michigan University and MCC Partner to Create New Articulation Agreements MCC at 2009 Sloan Auto Fair Automotive Profs. Jerry Whitney and Matt Roda coordinated a booth and had autobody and automotive students available to help park cars at the event, which was held June 27-28. Auto Body student, Tony Albin, displayed his 1965 Factory Five Racing Cobra and Bob Gaffney, another Auto Body student, displayed his 1965 Corvette at the MCC booth. Both refinished their vehicles in the auto body program at MCC. The cars generated lots of attention to our booth. Foundation for MCC Events Administrators with MCC and Eastern Michigan University came together on the MCC main campus on Thursday, July 9 to formalize an agreement that will allow for the seamless transition of students seeking bachelor degrees in cutting edge fields at EMU. A special signing ceremony was held in the Regional Technology Center auditorium to formalize the creation of three new articulation agreements with Eastern Michigan University. These agreements will allow students to take up to 94 credits of coursework at MCC to transfer into one of three bachelor degree programs at EMU: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Science in Technology Management. Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science in Business Management, General Business or Accounting, can transfer to EMU to pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration. Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science in Nursing can transfer to EMU to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). Students receiving an Associate in Applied Science degree from MCC in several programs, from Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology to Culinary Arts, from Graphic Design to Web Development, can transfer to EMU to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Technology Management degree. Articulation agreements specify a course taking plan, ultimately resulting in a seamless transfer of credits for students to their chosen program of study at a four-year educational institution. MCC has articulation agreements with more than a dozen universities in Michigan that allow transfer credits from MCC in more than 50 programs.
