The event was held June 10, 2009 at The Whiting. Mott Community College was among the 11 corporate sponDelores Deen Sharon Ewles sors of the YWCA event given an opportunity to publicly honor women in the workplace who have made outstanding contributions to the success of their organizations. The Women of Achievement Awards event, known as the "premier recognition program for women in Genesee County," also bestows the prestigious Nina Mills Award to women who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen fields of endeavor or in service to the community. (YWCA founder Nina Mills led the initiative to open a YWCA facility in the Flint community while working as an assistant to the City of Flint Treasurer). With a mission dedicated to eliminating racism and empowering women, the YWCA of Greater Flint continues to provide a comprehensive set of services dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for the people in this community. MCC Creative Expression Camp A novel summer camp experience giving students from the community a chance to explore their creative side is being offered by MCC again this year. The Creative Expression Camp will provide a variety of creative writing activities for students in grades 4-8, at all skill levels. The camp will meet from 8:30 am to 12 noon, Wednesday to Friday, July 22-24 in designated classrooms in the Curtice-Mott Complex and the Mott Memorial Building. Instruction will be provided by MCC faculty and students. The cost of the camp is $20. Supplies, equipment and snacks will be furnished by MCC. Parents, guardians, and trusted adults are welcome to attend all sessions. Camp sessions include: "Personal Narratives;" "Write Your Own Ghost Story;" "Make a Speech" and "Create poetry from a visual image." A special presentation for students to showcase their projects is scheduled for 4 to 6 pm Friday, July 24 in the auditorium of the MCC Gorman Science Center. Becky will become President of the MiAEYC at the end of June 2010, for a term of two years. Congratulations to Becky for her outstanding work within the Early Childhood Education community in Michigan. MCC chefs and culinary arts instructors Matt Cooper and Bill Crawford, along with other chefs from the local chapter of the American Culinary Federation, prepared culinary delights and provided tastings at the Dort Federal Credit Union's Taste of the Market, at Flint Farmers' Market on Saturday, June 20. In addition, ACF chefs will provide demos each Thursday through Labor Day at Farmers' Market. Chef Cooper arranges for ACF chefs to volunteer for these activities. This year marks the third year that Chef Cooper has lead the "Chefs at the Market" demo series, designed to promote the culinary program at MCC and the importance of having welltrained and skilled culinarians in the industry's kitchens. The demos have been so popular that Dort Federal now sponsors the event by providing funding to offset the costs of advertising and needed equipment. Chulindra Cooks, Interim Administrative Assistant, Planning, Research & Quality, provides a report on Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) activity. Clark Harris, Dean of the Technology Division, presented the "Fantastic Faculty Feature" workshop for June, entitled "Low Maintenance Landscaping." Arou n Sgt. Nancy Metcalfe provides a report about the bicycle rodeo, sponosored by the Department of Public Safety along with the Flint Police Department, held on June 3 at Bryant School on Pierson Road. "We gave away 100 helmets, provided obstacle course, bike safety training, served ice cream and gave away six new bicycles. The Foundation for MCC once again came through with a donation, WalMart donated $50 and also gave us a good deal on bikes." Academic Resource Administrator Dolores Sharpe tells us that Jennifer Kroninger, Administrative Assistant to the Vice President for Academic Affairs, has been elected as the Recording Secretary to the Friends of the Mott Library. Jennifer has been a member of the Friends' Board for about one year and also serves as co-chair on the Friends' Fundraising Committee. Johanna Brown, Dean of the Science and Mathematics Division, is proud to report the Carman-Ainsworth FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Lego robotics team, Da Peeps, finished first at the international competition's World Festival last month in Atlanta. The 10-student team beat 84 other teams from 27 countries. Da Peeps coach, Leanne Welch is the daughter of Dr. William Welch, MCC adjunct instructor of Science Inquiry, a long-time advocate and supporter of FIRST competition activities in the Flint and Genesee County area. Here's news from the Social Science division: Dr. Lillie McCain, Psychology, and Paul Rozycki, Political Science, presented at the International Conference for Service Learning in Teacher Education in Galway, Ireland, June 24-27. Their topic was "A Case Study of the Civically Engaged College: A Dynamic Triad of the College, the Honors Program and the Community." On May 19, Michael Simon, Manager, President's Office and Carol Van Buren, Secretary, Regional Technology Initiatives, became graduates of Leadership Genesee. The program is offered by Resource Genesee (formally Resource Center) The graduation dinner took place at Kettering University. Adjunct English Professor Wendy Byard, author of Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching with Love was a panelist at the 6th Annual Children's Mental Health Symposium on June 22, held at Thurston High School in Redford, Michigan. This year's theme was "Opening the Door to Communication and Services to Kids in School." An article about the symposium in the June 25, 2009 edition of the Observer & Eccentric newspaper indicated that County Commissioner Diane Webb, one of about 90 people in attendance, said she particularly enjoyed the presentation of Wendy Byard, who talked about her book, Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Teaching With Love. Public Information Executive Director Michael Kelly will be gracing the stage again this summer in the City of Flint and Genesee County Parks “Theater in Our Parks” program. He will be in the cast of this seasons children’s fairy tale theater production of “Snow White.” This is a 30-minute show aimed at younger audiences. Renowned Blues Pianist Mark Braun Pedaling Piano to MCC to Benefit Student Athletes The Foundation for Mott Community College is pleased to announce that Mark Braun, the youngest inductee to the National Boogie Woogie Hall of Fame, will be performing at noon on Tuesday, July 7 at MCC's Bear Bistro. Braun is wheeling his custom-made "Joybox Express" – a rickshaw fastened on the back of his bicycle and carrying a 352-pound piano – to MCC for the concert. Braun plans to pedal his bicycle/rickshaw to several points in Michigan on a six-day tour, stopping along the way to share his passionate approach to the music that makes his concerts an unforgettable experience. The July 7 concert at MCC's Bear Bistro is FREE. Food is available for purchase, with a percentage of sales going to the Foundation for MCC's Athletic Fund to benefit student athletes. MCC Alumni Homecoming Celebration Set for August 28-29 YMCA Re-Tread 5K Run & Walk The MCCEA Run-Walk Club participated in the 2009 YMCA Retread 5 K Run and Walk on June 19, proudly wearing their Mott attire. Added Kathryn Gurin: "We have had great support to get everyone interacting with each other from MCCEA. Training was a "blast" and although there were a few "injuries" everyone still made it to the big race day and I must say, all placing in very honorable rankings. Good going, Mott Bears!" MCC's run walk club was sponsored by MCCEA. Runners on the MCC team participating in the event include Lynn Wandrey, Tina Hughes, Parmis Johnson, Dennis Hughes and Douglas Thibaut. Outstanding Employee of the Month An exciting, fun-filled weekend is planned for MCC alumni, family and friends on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 28 and 29 at the MCC Alumni Homecoming Celebration. Noted among Wanda's strongest strengths is her ability to build strong partnerships and relationships with her peers, students and community members. She was described as being "actively engaged and committed to the mission, vision and values of the organization." In addition, her constant promotion of MCC by wearing her MCC pin everywhere she goes while proudly encouraging everyone to attend MCC, has resulted in most people in Lapeer referring to her as "Miss Mott."
