community colleges.
Dr. Fugate has worked as the Vice President for Academic
Affairs at MCC since October 2006. Prior to coming to MCC, she
served as Dean of Humanities and Fine Arts at Kansas City, Kansas

supervision, evaluation and fiscal management of comprehensive general education, transfer and vocational/technical programs. MCC has more than 90 programs with instruction delivered through eight
academic divisions.
"Being chosen to serve on the AACC's National Council of Instructional Administrators is a
tremendous honor," said MCC President Dick Shaink. "We are so proud of Dr. Fugate and the exemplary leadership she has demonstrated here at Mott Community College. I'm confident that she will be an
invaluable asset to the NCIA, and she will represent us well at the national level.

and enthusiastic crowds. Now the production is going beyond
Kearsley Park to parks across the city and county. Admission to all

the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors,
their interactions with the Duke of Athens, the Queen of the Amazons
and the fairies who inhabit a moonlit forest. The play is one of
Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. The cast features actors ranging from three

Technology Division Profs. Dennis Hughes and Jason Slade
developed a cross-discipline group project for second year CADD
and ELEC students. The students were placed into teams and tasked
with the design and prototype of a fully-automated assembly process
for the production of an inexpensive skateboard. Students not only
had to deal with the technical aspects of the project, but also deadlines, time management and communication issues. For many students this was a real eye opener into how development occurs. The
CADD / ELEC project received positive feedback from the GM Weld
Center for such a realistic project and encouraged future projects.

MCC Provides Free Training
to First Responders on
Hybrid Vehicle Rescues
President Barack
Obama's "Auto Czar" at
Mott Community College
MCC is offering free training for firefighters and first responders to
provide instruction on how to deal with high voltage electric hybrid vehicles. This course is free and available on a first come, first-served basis.
Space is limited.
"First Responder Training – Dealing with Hybrid Electric Vehicles," a
four-hour class utilizing a lecture/laboratory format, is designed to teach
first responders how to deal with scenarios involving high-voltage electric
hybrid vehicles. Topics to be covered in the class include different types of
hybrid vehicles; identifying a hybrid vehicle; identifying hybrid components; how to "de-power" a hybrid; cut points; overhaul and rescue scenarios. All course materials will be supplied. Hybrid vehicles will be on hand
for first responders to view and test on.
The First Responder class is taught by Matt Roda, MCC Program
Coordinator and an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Master Certified
Technician. "The popularity of hybrids is growing at a rapid rate and the
chance of first responders having to deal with a high voltage hybrid is
becoming more and more likely," according to Roda. "Today's hybrids have
batteries that produce up to 300 volts. These cars have proven to be safe
and reliable, even in accidents. But first responders need to be aware of
what they can and cannot do with this high voltage technology." Classes
will be held in the RTC in Room 1010. For more information, call MCC
Corporate Services Department at (810) 762-0589.
Ed Montgomery, White House director of recovery for automobile communities and workers, was joined by a host of community
leaders, government officials, dignitaries and congressional leaders
at MCC's Regional Technology Center on Friday, May 8.
Montgomery, who also toured GM's Flint Engine South plant, was
in Flint to discuss plans for redevelopment of the area.
L to R: Senator Carl Levin, Dr. Edward Montgomery
and Senator Dale Kildee address issues about Flint.
Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm explains the
importance of the White House directors visit to Michigan.
Local media, as well as international media, were on hand to
cover the event.
