MCC Provides Free Training to First Responders on Hybrid Vehicle Rescues President Barack Obama's "Auto Czar" at Mott Community College MCC is offering free training for firefighters and first responders to provide instruction on how to deal with high voltage electric hybrid vehicles. This course is free and available on a first come, first-served basis. Space is limited. "First Responder Training – Dealing with Hybrid Electric Vehicles," a four-hour class utilizing a lecture/laboratory format, is designed to teach first responders how to deal with scenarios involving high-voltage electric hybrid vehicles. Topics to be covered in the class include different types of hybrid vehicles; identifying a hybrid vehicle; identifying hybrid components; how to "de-power" a hybrid; cut points; overhaul and rescue scenarios. All course materials will be supplied. Hybrid vehicles will be on hand for first responders to view and test on. The First Responder class is taught by Matt Roda, MCC Program Coordinator and an ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) Master Certified Technician. "The popularity of hybrids is growing at a rapid rate and the chance of first responders having to deal with a high voltage hybrid is becoming more and more likely," according to Roda. "Today's hybrids have batteries that produce up to 300 volts. These cars have proven to be safe and reliable, even in accidents. But first responders need to be aware of what they can and cannot do with this high voltage technology." Classes will be held in the RTC in Room 1010.
