MCC Business Professor Visits Poland
Bettie L. Goodman, Professor of Office
Information Systems, Business Division, started the
Winter Semester by teaching in Poland from January
10-24, 2009. She presented a series of lectures on
Cultural Diversity in Information Processing for students of the Faculty of Management, AIG University
of Science and Technology in Krakow, Poland.
Lectures were presented in English to approximately
31 students and included discussions, videos on business practices in different countries, Internet research
on cultural blunders and concluded with a seven
minute oral presentation on the culture of a country of
the student's choice.
This university is approximately the size of
Western Michigan University and education is free,
but students must take a competitive exam to enroll.
The average age of the students was 23 and it is a standard practice for the students to dress in
suits and ties for the final exam.
"The Polish students are very respectful and view education as a privilege," noted Prof.
Goodman. "Excuses for not doing course work were unacceptable."
After the class ended, Prof. Goodman invited her class to a local establishment to socialize and interact on a personal level. The majority of the students could speak an average of
three languages and were very interested in the election of President Barack Obama.
Prof. Goodman had visited Krakow in 2004 to attend the Société Internationale pour
l'Enseignement Commercial /International Society for Business Education (SIEC/ISBE)
Conference but this visit was beyond expectations, she added. "It is an experience I will cherish for the rest of my life."
Musical Tribute to Black History The
Social Sciences Division presented "An
Afternoon of Black History in Song," featuring a discussion of the role of spirituals in the
African American experience by History professors Brian Harding and Aaron Gulyas, as
well as spirited vocals by Sociology Professor
Terrence Stewart, bass baritone, accompanied
by Early Childhood Instructor Sue Lechota on
piano. The program, in observance of Black
History Month, was held in the Event Center
on Feb. 17.
