International Community College
Association Names MCC President
Top Community College President in
North America
The Washington-based Association of Community College
Trustees (ACCT) has named Mott Community College President M.
Richard Shaink as the best community college president/CEO in North
America. The 2010 Marie Y. Martin Chief Executive Award was
presented at the ACCT Annual Community College Leadership Congress in Toronto, Canada on Friday, Oct. 22.
Dr. Shaink had recently also been chosen as the recipient of the
2010 Central Regional Chief Executive Officer Award, which
designated him as the best community college president/CEO in the
Midwestern states and Canadian provinces, making him a finalist for
the international award, presented annually in recognition of the
continent's top community college CEO.
MCC Board Chair Lenore Croudy said, "To have Dr. Shaink receive this national recognition from his peers by having been chosen as
the top community college president/CEO in the nation and beyond is
one more sign of how well Mott Community College is serving our community. As is usual for him, Dr.
Shaink gave credit to the staff and faculty of the college when he accepted his award but his leadership
of this college through difficult financial times and in the face of a changing economy has been an inspiration. Our community should be proud to see Dr. Shaink receive this most prestigious and
well-deserved award."
Dr. Shaink has served as President of Mott Community College since March 31, 2000. When he arrived at MCC, its main concerns were institutional stability and finances. Dr. Shaink successfully went
to the voters and won approval of the first property tax millage increase since the college was established
as a countywide community college in 1969. In addition, MCC aggressively pursued and won millions
of grants from federal and state government as well as private foundations. At the same time, Dr. Shaink
led a cost-cutting program through information-sharing and transparency. He directed the building of
MCC's Regional Technology Center (RTC) and has taken an active role in economic development in the
community.

on the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. It was a huge success. Mott College had a great team made
up of 80 students, faculty, staff, friends and family. Pledges are still

$2,700 dollars toward cancer research, education and services for
those affected by this disease. MCC joined the ranks of 4,100 walkers
raising over $229,000. “Please support our sponsors: the Foundation
for Mott Community College, Southern Lakes Branch Center, Mott
College Bookstore and Car Quest of Owosso,” adds Rebecca. “Our
teams top pledge earners who received MCC Prize packages were

Enrollment at Mott Community College has hit an all-time high with
more than 13,000 students recorded for the Fall 2010 semester -- the highest in the college's 87-year-history, contributing to a major increase in the
number of college students in the area.
The total number of students pursuing a college degree in Genesee
County has climbed to 33,776. This milestone was the focus of an October
27 news conference presented at the Genesee Regional Chamber of Conference.
According to the Chamber, this total enrollment figure among the
county's four biggest colleges which includes MCC, Baker College of
Flint, Kettering University and the University of Michigan-Flint, reflects a
record number of students attending college in Genesee County.
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling is among a number of officials who hope
the high student enrollment is proof that Flint may be evolving into a
college town. He was joined by the CEOs of the four colleges making remarks at the news conference about what this milestone means to the institutions and the communities they serve.
"We have the dream team of higher education leadership, right here
in Flint and Genesee County," Mayor Walling said. This is the most amazing number (33,776 student enrollment in Genesee County) I've seen in a
long time. Cities and communities around the country are
competing everyday for these numbers. We're winning. We're moving
forward. This is only the beginning."
Dr. Shaink commented about how the spirit of collaboration and partnership among the four institutions have been the key to the schools' successes.
"People are always impressed about how well we work together,"
Dr. Shaink said. "This number is really the outcome of all of us working
together. We've laid a strong foundation, and we're very proud."
Also contributing to the 33,000-plus enrollment number is the
additional student body count from Cleary University, Davenport University, Ferris State University, Spring Arbor University and ITT Technical
Institute, Regional Chamber officials noted.
Cheryl Bassett, Chief Technology Officer and Steve Robinson, Executive Dean, Planning, Research & Quality Initiatives, graduated from the
Academy for Leadership and Development on Aug. 27, 2010, after successfully completing the Academy program requirements.
The Academy is a yearlong program which includes an initial week of
on-site training; a practicum experience involving implementation of an individualized professional development plan focusing on the application of
skills learned during training; a mentor and coaching program; and a final
week of on-site training consisting of additional leadership issues.
Some of the topics covered include: Complex Role of he Organizational Leader, Work Behavioral Styles, Building Effective Work Teams,
Strategic Planning and Scenario Thinking, Managing Conflict Productively,
Facilitating, Integrating & Celebrating Strengths, Dimensions of Leadership, Leading and Managing Change, Leader as Manager, Valuing Diversity
& Cultural Competence, Hiring and Orienting for Excellence, Coaching,
Developing & Talent Management and Leading Part-time Staff.
The Academy for Leadership and Development is a program
developed by the Chair Academy, a division of the Maricopa Community
College District, in Mesa, Arizona, for the purpose of advancing organizational leadership and provides succession planning for leaders in post-secondary institutions. Participants in the program are selected and nominated
by their individual colleges to attend.
Holiday Food Drive
MCC has partnered with Baker College of Flint, Kettering University and
the University of Michigan-Flint in the annual launch of the Holiday Food
Drive. Proceeds benefit the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan.
MCC, Baker, Kettering and UM-Flint are engaging in a friendly
competition again this year to see which institution can donate the most money
and items to the food bank. The school raising the most will receive a traveling
trophy that will be handed off to next year's winner.
The last day to donate items for the Holiday Food Drive is Dec. 18, 2010.
MCC raised over 21,000 pounds of food last year -- a great contribution – but
the winner of last year's competition, Baker College of Flint. raised over
24,000 pounds. You can help MCC win the trophy this year by making a donation.
Collection boxes for food donations can be found at the Lapeer Extension
Center, Northern Tier Center, Southern Lakes Branch Center, Wagner Building,
and at the MCC Main Campus in the Prahl College Center, Curtice-Mott Complex near CM1121, the Regional Technology Center, and the Department of
Public Safety main office at Presidential Court and Gorman Drive. The collection box for monetary donations is located at the Department of Public Safety
office. Please feel free to call Public Safety at (810) 762-0222 to request an officer to pick up donations at your worksite.
