Open House for MCC Media Arts &
Entertainment Technology Program
An open house giving the college community and area residents an opportunity to tour the
facility and learn all about the features of the college's new Media Arts and Entertainment
Technology (MAET) program is set for 5:30 to 7 pm on Monday, Aug. 16. Visitors will first
assemble in the Mott Memorial Building auditorium and will be led to the terrace level of the
Mott Memorial Building where MAET courses are held, (accessed via the southwest
elevator/stairwell). This event is free and open to the public.
MCC's Media Arts and Entertainment Technology program offers an Associate in Applied
Science Degree and a Certificate of Achievement, focusing on the knowledge, skills, and attitudes
necessary to succeed in the fields of video, audio, cinema, web and multimedia production. The
curriculum integrates a wide range of pre-production, production, and post-production experiences with the insights offered by media aesthetics, history, theory, and analysis.
A heavy emphasis is placed on the creation of content and messages that are compelling,
effective and of substantial quality. Graduates will find a wide range of professional employment,
both in Michigan and the nation, including positions in the film industry, at radio and television
stations, advertising agencies, production and post-production houses, school systems, non-profits
and corporations. Other students can transfer to a four-year college or university to further their
studies. For more information, contact David Rembiesa, MCC Media Arts & Entertainment
Coordinator by email at david.rembiesa@mcc.edu or at (810) 232-4742.

Matt Roda,
Around Campus Coordinator/Instructor
Automotive Technology, has good news to report on the job fair
hosted by the automotive department, which featured representatives
from Northwest Tire and Service. Matt says he was approached by
Northwest's owner, AJ Faught, in mid-June expressing a need for the
company to hire 10 to 20 new technicians in the upcoming months.
The job fair was planned and organized to include Northwest as the
only employer, with all of MCC's most recent advanced level
students invited so Northwest could present to the one group. More
than 30 students showed up to hear Faught describe his company and
explain the potential employment opportunities they have. After a
question and answer period, Northwest accepted applications and
resumes from all of the students present. Several students have been
hired already and are serving as apprentices under current Northwest
techs, and there is a possibility that more students will get hired in
upcoming months. Kudos go to Employment Services Coordinator
Cindy McDaniel. In late April, Cindy conducted a workshop with
our students on how to seek employment, build resumes and do cover
letters. "I believe a lot of my students were more prepared because
of Cindy's work, which help our students stand above other applicants NW was receiving from the outside," Matt added.
From Jackie Knoll, English Instructor and Creative Expressions
Camp Coordinator: For the fifth consecutive year, MCC's Creative
Expressions Camp, held July 19 to July 22, was a huge success.
MCC had an all-time high of 35 campers, ranging in age from 9-14.
Campers rotated through three different creative writing workshops-PowerPoint poetry, fiction, and drama. For the first time this year, all
sessions were taught and designed by MCC students. Former camper
Monica Ingram, daughter of MCC Communications Specialist
Sharon Campbell, also co-designed and taught the fiction workshop.
The student-teachers were assisted by MCC humanities faculty Paula
Weston, Laura Tobias, Bev Vargo, and Sounya Walker. The camp
culminated in a reception Thursday, July 22, during which the
campers shared their poetry, fiction, and skits with their parents and
friends. The camp was made possible by the Foundation for Mott
Community College and the James A. Welch Foundation.
News from Lori Trumbo, Executive Dean, Professional
Development & Experiential Learning and William Reich, Director,
Center for Teaching & Learning: The Office of Professional
Development, would like to thank the following people for presenting
workshops for the CTL during the month of July:
Robert Benard-Technology Division: "Microsoft Office 2007:
PowerPoint"
Cheryl Bassett- Information Technology Services: "Computer
Network Security"
Stephanie Naeyaert - Humanities Division: "Basic American Sign
Language"
On another note, Wendy Byard, MCC Lapeer instructor, author
and speaker, appeared on a Midwest radio show hosted by wellknown on-air personality Char Binkley in July. Byard, author of
Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching With
Love, was a guest on the WBCL daily talk show "Talk For Women
Worth Talking About" on Thursday, July 22. Byard was on hand to
discuss her book, which encourages teachers to examine their
philosophies and consider approaching their calling from an even
higher level. This level, which Byard calls love, is making a daily
commitment to teach with the virtues of love (compassion, sincerity,
generosity, good temper, and others) to every student. Byard explains
that today's educators are all looking for ways to strengthen classroom learning. "Yet, there seems to be little discussion about the
importance of the affective domain in classrooms – the need for
teachers to create loving environments and relationships that best
allow students to learn," Wendy says. To learn more, visit wendyb-

Chulindra Cooks, Administrative Assistant in Professional
Development & Experiential Learning, lets us know that MCC has
been selected to host an AmeriCorps Volunteers in Service to
America (*VISTA) volunteer for 2010-2011. Simone Mishler, an
Alma College graduate with a degree in Communication, begins her
year of service at MCC on Aug. 2, 2010. She will work in the Office
of Experiential Learning, under the supervision of Executive Dean
Lori Trumbo. Her primary duties will include assisting with the
development of processes and systems to support Service Learning
initiatives, build community partnerships, and recruit, train and
coordinate student volunteers. A reception for Simone Mishler will be
held during Fall Semester Kick-Off week. Details will be
forthcoming. AmeriCorps*VISTA members address the problems of
poverty in a particular community, mobilizing community resources
while increasing the capacity of the low-income community to solve
its own problems. AmeriCorps*VISTA is part of the AmeriCorps
national network of service programs within the Corporation for
National and Community Service. See www.cns.gov for more
information.
Public Safety Administrative Assistant Beverly Lloyd tells us
that congratulations are in order for Sgt. Paul Lape on his retirement.
Sgt. Lape leaves the Department of Public Safety after eight years to
pursue fishing, hunting and enjoying "the good life." We wish him
well.
Counselor Brian Ivory was part of a five-day training titled,
“Cross-Cultural Facilitation Skills for Diversity Trainers, Therapists
& Educators” last month. This workshop focused on understanding
how cultural differences can impact group dynamics, relationships
among participants and their sense of safety.
English Prof. Greg Shafer has been selected to serve a one-year
term on the James Berlin Dissertation Award Selection Committee for
the Conference on College Composition and Communication. He will
work with other members to select the outstanding dissertation for
2011.
Theater Instructor Dan Gerics will be shooting a film throughout August. He's an actor in the film Mimesis, which will be released
on video some time next year. An homage to the original Night of the
Living Dead, it's being shot in Chesterfield, Mich. Dan plays a
"sociopath who thrill kills." Also, Flint City Theater will present
Forest For The Trees by Megan Donahue and Bob Gerics, which is
being produced by Dan Gerics, on Sept 23-Oct 2.
Sociology Instructor Janet Talarico and her husband enjoyed a
cultural exchange this past school year by hosting an Italian exchange
student from Sicily. The young man attended high school in Flushing
and enjoyed the "American high school experience." "It was very different from what he was used to in Italy," says Janet. He boarded the
plane back to Sicily in June, loaded with ideas to bring back to his
school. He was looking forward to sharing his experiences with his
schoolmates and offering suggestions to his school administration.
Janet and her family equally enjoyed the experience and have been
invited to Sicily by their host son and his family. Someday they hope
to take them up on their offer.
Public Information's Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez lets us know that
the Flint River Wild Ones will tour the Seven Ponds Nature Center,
located at 3854 Crawford Road in Dryden from 10 am to 12 noon on
Friday, Aug. 13. The group will car pool from MCC at 8:30 am at the
Ballenger Field House circle. Call Rebecca at 762-0455 for details.

Outstanding Employee
of the Month for May
Mary Cusack, Dean of the Fine Arts and Sociall
Sciences division congratulates Jennifer Fillion.
Anthropology Instructor Jennifer Fillion has been selected as the
Outstanding Employee of the Month for June 2010.
Jennifer first came to MCC in 2001 as a part-time instructor,
became a temporary full-time instructor in 2005 and a regular fulltime instructor in 2006. Since joining MCC, she has transformed
Anthropology from a small Sociology sub-set offering one course
each semester into a growing, vibrant discipline, with Jennifer and six
part-time instructors.
When she recognizes an opportunity, Jennifer promptly gets into
gear to make it work for MCC students. First, she saw the interest in
forensics and promptly created the Forensic Anthropology class,
which is extremely popular with students. Jennifer also created an
Autopsy Technician Certificate program in conjunction with the
Medical Director of the Genesee County Morgue. In addition, she
took part in the Ballenger Women in Science program and her breakout sessions were standing-room only. Jennifer is also a co-advisor
for the Geology/Archeology student club.
Jennifer was described as someone who "embraces and creates
change" and applauded for being an "energetic and enthusiastic
faculty member who is passionate about her subject area and about
Mott Community College students."
In addition to a framed certificate of appreciation, Jennifer was
presented with a balloon bouquet and a $50 Target gift card.
