MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONNECTION JUNE 2010 MCC FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLETTER WHAT’S INSIDE AROUND CAMPUS VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SLOAN MUSEUM AUTO FAIR OUTSTANDING EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR Q UOTE OF THE M ONTH "We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.." -- Maya Angelou MCC Joins National Initiative to Enhance Student Success MCC has joined Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count, a national initiative that seeks to increase student success at community colleges. With support from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, MCC joins 26 other community colleges from around the country in becoming members of Achieving the Dream -- identifying strategies to improve student success, close achievement gaps and increase retention, persistence, and completion rates. Conceived in 2004 by the Lumina Foundation for Education and seven national partner organizations, Achieving the Dream is focused on creating a "culture of evidence" on community college campuses in which data collection and analysis drive efforts to identify problems that prevent students from succeeding—particularly low-income students and students of color—and developing programs to help them stay in school and receive a certificate or diploma. MCC President Dick Shaink stated, "We are pleased to have been selected to join Achieving the Dream, a national initiative that has demonstrated success in improving student achievement. Mott Community College will work with faculty, staff and students and the expertise provided by Achieving the Dream to determine new approaches that insure all students have an opportunity to succeed. We are very appreciative of the support provided by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation for our involvement in this endeavor." A particular area of focus for MCC will be developmental education and student preparedness. Like many urban community colleges, MCC has seen record increases in enrollment. As a result, a significantly higher percentage of students arrive unprepared for post-secondary curriculum and college life in general. Participation in Achieving the Dream will help MCC with recently-launched initiatives aimed at improving the college's ability to help under-prepared students. MCC Adds New Certificate in Robotic Programming MCC is offering a new certificate program designed for individuals interested in pursuing careers in the cutting-edge, high-tech field of robotic programming. The certificate of achievement in robotic programming and control, offered through the Technology Division, is designed for professionals that have already earned a minimum of an Associated of Applied Science (AAS) degree or Certificate of Achievement in Electronics and Electrical Technology, Computer Aided Drafting and Design, Computer Occupations Technology, Mechanical Operations Technology, or related technical field or have five years of relevant work experience. This certificate is also designed to provide training in robotic programming and controls to supplement the technical degree. Students will be prepared for careers in control systems, industrial automation, work cell development and robotics. "The field of robotics demands many skills, and this new certificate is specifically designed to give students seeking careers in robotic programming the skills set they need to be successful," said Dolores Sharpe, Executive Director of Academic Operations at MCC. Outstanding Employees of the Year Rebecca (Becky) Garske, Instructor/Coordinator, Early Childcare Education Program in the Social Sciences Division and Kathleen Goodrow, Administrative Assistant, Library Services, have been chosen Outstanding Employees of the Year. Becky Garske began employment with the College as a part-time instructor in June 2003. She became a full-time instructor in January 2007 and assumed Becky (at left), Dr. Shaink and Kathleen the coordinator duties in January 2008. Comments noted in the nomination for Becky include: "A graduate of Mott Community College, Becky understands the Early Childhood Education students here in a way no one else could. Becky has held numerous positions in the Early Childhood field throughout the Flint/Genesee County community. She has been a teacher at the pre-K level, she has been the director of several child-care centers/organizations and has earned a bachelor's and a master's degree while doing the work she loves. She knows from experience what it is like to be a non-traditional student – juggling work, child care, family life and college. She understands and cares for her students, and they respond to this with enthusiasm. When she recognizes a problem, Becky immediately works to solve it. There is a table in the division office near the coffee machine that she calls her "creative thinking table." After she spends time at that table, she comes up with great ideas to improve the program, her students' performance and/or the community. She is the founder and advisor of the Early Childhood Student Club at MCC. The club presented a workshop at the Michigan Association for the Education of Young Children (MiAEYC) conference in March 2009, and has just returned from a trip to Washington, DC, where they represented community college students at the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and took a special tour of the White House." Kathleen has been employed in the College Library since August 1985. She has held numerous positions, including: Clerk, Staff Assistant and Administrative Assistant. Comments about Kathleen include: "Kathleen epitomizes what every library staff member considers their mission – to work to provide outstanding library service to the students, faculty, staff and community. She has an overall view of what is important to supporting the work of the library staff and works each day to make it easier for others – from payroll, to purchasing, to informational brochures, or newsletters – she does it all willingly and with an awareness and excitement of what it means to the library users. She has great ideas that translate into action. Her work with the Friends of the Mott Library is one indication of that dedication. Her abilities are put to work in all that the Friends do to support the library through fundraising and educational programming. She is well-respected by everyone on the Friends' Board. Kathleen puts herself in others' shoes and is able to work collaboratively to make a project, event or initiative successful. She knows people throughout the College and has volunteered to be a part of the greater campus community in efforts such as the Bear Bistro opening – two of her entries were chosen as names for menu items. Kathleen is the epitome of excellence and a tribute to the College."
