Pamela Faris (left) is sworn in by MCC Board Chair Lenore Croudy MCC Receives Grant from Michigan College Access Network MCC is among a group of recipients awarded planning grants to support student access and success in college. The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN) recently announced that 17 communities will collectively receive more than $250,000 in grants designed to help Michigan communities establish local college access networks. These networks will coordinate programs, services, and resources that lower the barriers preventing students, particularly low-income and first-generation students, from pursuing postsecondary educational opportunities. MCC was among 14 of the grant recipients awarded $8,000 in planning grants. "The Michigan College Access Network is mobilizing assets for communities across the state to help make higher education accessible and affordable for every Michigan citizen," stated Governor Jennifer M. Granholm in a news release announcing the grant awards. "In this 21st century economy, businesses require a 21st century talent pool, and that means Michigan needs to have one of the best-educated workforces in the world." The Michigan College Access Network (MCAN), established in 2009 in collaboration with the Office of the Governor, exists to increase Michigan's college participation and completion rates, particularly among low-income and first-generation college students. The goal of the organization is to increase the proportion of Michigan residents with high-quality degrees and credentials from 34 percent to 60 percent by the year 2025. For information about Michigan College Access Network, call (517) 335-5113. Around Campus Music Prof. Mary Procopio was recently elected to the Board of Directors of the Haitian Studies Association, an international educational organization that promotes research on Haiti and Haitians, identifies and disseminates information on Haiti, and has an international network of competent experts to address Haitian issues, both from disciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives. This semester, Mary implemented the MCC Residency Program for Educational and Cultural Exchange, hosting five Haitian musicians from the Holy Trinity Music School in Port-au-Prince in the music area. The musicians have been giving performances and presentations on campus and in the community, in addition to performing in ensembles and sitting in on music classes. Mary is also organizing the "Friends of Haiti" Benefit Concert which will be held Friday, March 19 at Woodside Church as part of their Concerts for a Cause series. The concert will feature our MCC Haitian guest musicians, as well as other Haitian and non-Haitian musicians and volunteers affiliated with the Holy Trinity Music School. The concert will consist of orchestral, chamber, and solo music by Haitian composers. There will also be a silent auction of Haitian art at the concert. From Music Prof. Mari Yancho: The MCC Guitar Ensemble performed an original composition by Andrew York, founding member of the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, at the Winter Holiday Concert in December. The piece, "Brajamazill" was debuted in Michigan in August by the Interlochen Guitar Festival ensemble, a group co-created by Mari Yancho and John Wunsch, head of guitar studies at Interlochen. Mari Yancho received special permission from York to perform the piece, which is awaiting publication. Social Sciences Dean Margaret Brainard shares news from the Social Sciences Division. History Prof. Aaron Gulyas has been accepted as a presenter at the Great Lakes The Humanities and Technology Camp (THATCamp) to be held at Michigan State University on March 20 and 21. Great Lakes THATCamp is a user-generated "unconference" on digital humanities originally inspired by the Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University. Aaron's session will be Digital History and the Community College. He is currently working on a revamp of the department's oral history course which will expand into larger areas of local history. "I'm also, at the same time, working on a revamp of our static, old-school-looking department website," Aaron stated.” What I would like to do is have a database-driven, dynamic site that faculty will find more useful. Then it hit me that if students are doing local and oral history projects, a new, dynamic department website could be the perfect place to showcase these projects. This would have the additional pedagogical utility of introducing students to composing for a wider audience." Bettina Campbell, LMSW, part-time faculty member in the Social Work Technician Program, recently had an article published in the journal Public Health Reports, 2010 Supplement I, Volume 125. In addition, Bettina has co-authored a chapter in a social work textbook, Social Work in Health Settings: Practice in Context, 3rd edition. The chapter is entitled: “YOUR Blessed Health: A faith-based, community-based participatory research project to reduce the incidence of HIV/AIDS and sexually transmitted infections.” Business Division Dean Robert Loth brings us news from the Cosmetology Area. GRiT's "Clean your Office Daze" is back and collaborating with the Annual Earth Day celebration in a College Recycling Challenge between Baker College of Flint, Kettering University, University of Michigan-Flint and Mott Community College. A recycling trailer will be on our campus March 22 - March 28 and April 12 - April 18, located in Lot Q outside Public Safety. The college that collects the greatest number of pounds per student of recyclable waste wins the contest. The winner takes all the proceeds from all of the recycling efforts and can use the money at their college to promote recycling. The winner will also have their name on the recycling trailer for a year long promotion as the 2010 winner of the Recycling Challenge. Only properly sorted material that meets the criteria listed will count. Following are some helpful tips: Do not place material in the bin if the section that is labeled for it is full. The trailer will be emptied as needed. Copier paper, newsprint, magazines, phonebooks, clean cans, corrugated cardboard and plastics will be recycled. Plastic bottles with caps/lids removed should be placed in the bin. Only bottles with #1 or #2 in the triangle on the bottom of the bottle will be accepted; wax-coated cardboard, such as packaging cereal boxes or cake mixes or rolled cardboard, such as paper towel rolls, will not be accepted. Items must be properly sorted to count. A box for bottle caps of all kinds will be placed along side the trailer. Any caps or lids from plastic beverage bottles to laundry soap or peanut butter jars can be placed in this box for use in a mural competition that takes place annually at middle schools. We will also be collecting gently used office supplies for reuse, ie. pens, pencils, file folders, highlighters, note pads, notebooks, dividers, floppy disks, trays, step files, toner, typewriter ribbons etc. for the Clean Your Office Daze event. During our first Recycling Challenge week, March 22 - March 28, and the last three days of the second week April 12 – 18, these items can also be placed in bins located in the Prahl College Center North lounge, adjacent to the Public Safety Mini station. You can also bring recyclables in from home for the Recycling Challenge. Batteries or electronics will not be recycled at this time. Electronics, dead or broken, can be taken to the Goodwill Store, located at 501 S. Averill Avenue in Flint. You can also save your batteries for the upcoming Hazardous Waste Collection scheduled in May. Join MCC's GReen Initiatives Team and receive a free gift. For more information, call (810) 762-0455.
