MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONNECTION JANUARY 2010 MCC FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLETTER WHAT’S INSIDE AROUND CAMPUS EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH BLOOD DRIVE MCC TO OFFER GREEN CONSTRUCTION COURSE MCC EMERGENCY NOTIFICATION SYSTEM Q UOTE OF THE M ONTH "We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. Coach Steve Schmidt Inducted Into NJCAA Hall of Fame Steve Schmidt, longtime head men's basketball coach at Mott Community College, will be inducted into the NJCAA Men's Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Since its inception in 1984, a total of 123 coaches, players and special contributors have been inducted into the hall. Schmidt, along with four others, will be inducted in the 2010 class. Schmidt has been one of the most successful basketball coaches in the country since taking over the reins at MCC in 1991. After winning his first national championship in 2003, Schmidt won two more national titles backto-back in 2007 and 2008, when the Bears finished the season with a 33-game winning streak. Mott has never posted a sub-.500 record, having won more than 25 games in each of the last 14 seasons. Schmidt will accept the award at a banquet this spring in Las Vegas. "It's hard to describe," Schmidt said. "The fact of the matter is I've not won a single game by myself. I've been part of a team. All of this is possible because of the efforts of all these players. That's a perspective I've never lost." During his tenure at Mott, Schmidt has won three national coach of the year awards, as well as 11 conference, six regional, and six state championships. His teams have qualified for the national tournament six times and have advanced to the title game on five occasions. He has coached three national players of the year and 15 All-Americans. He currently holds the record for highest national tournament winning percentage at nearly 87 percent (20-3). Schmidt entered the 2009-2010 season with a staggering 478-115 career record, which ranks 17th among active NJCAA coaches. Prior to this national recognition, Schmidt was inducted into the Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame. Earlier this year, the administration at Mott Community College named the gymnasium at Ballenger Field House the Steve Schmidt Gymnasium. Ca m pus d Congratulations are in order for Department of Public Safety's Sgt. James Malcolm. He graduated from Michigan State University's Third School of Staff & Command on Dec. 11, completing 400 hours of on-campus instruction, distance learning and research assignments from August to December 2009. Sgt. Malcolm was among students who were actively engaged in assignments that involved problemsolving based techniques, in-depth discussions and critical thinking activities, addressing such items as delivery of efficient, effective and equitable police services with fewer resources; strategic planning and recommendations, zero-based budgeting, performance evaluations, five-year, future recommendations for the agency, manpower allocations, and grant writing. Congratulations, Sgt. Malcolm! Aro un A group of well-wishers on behalf of "Friends of Mott Community College Basketball" were on hand to deliver a $600 donation to Whaley Children's Center before the holidays in December. The Purchasing Department move is also complete. The new office is at CM1117A. All phone numbers are still the same. Graphic Arts Design Coordinator Mara Jevera Fulmer has news from the Fine Arts Division. Four areas of study, including Graphic Design, Art & Design Foundations, Photography, and Media Arts & Entertainment Technology, are very pleased to adopt the Designers Accord, an initiative meant to bring sustainable practices into curriculum. Even before adoption of this initiative, efforts within the Fine Arts Division had already been made that are in line with much of the Designers Accord. The efforts include the following objectives: 1) Build sustainable design practice and philosophy into all course curriculum. 2) Encourage other areas on our college campus to build curriculum that addresses sustainable design practice and philosophy into the course content and dialogue. 3) Select equipment and materials used within our areas of study with attention to the environmental impact, examining ways to reduce impact and initiate relevant recycling efforts. 4) Work with other organizations, both on and off campus, to create a dialogue about environmental issues and how design may play a role in improving environmentally sustainable practices. 5) Initiate a public dialogue through events in conjunction with campus partners, and with external clients that encourages knowledge sharing among community constituents. More information can be found at www.designersaccord.org. English Prof. Greg Shafer's essay "Higher Level Thinking, Writing, and Democracy" has been accepted for publication in Community College Journal of Research and Practice. It will be published sometime in 2010. Business Division Dean Robert Loth provides a report on activities from the Cosmetology Department: On Nov. 10, Cosmetology, Nail Technology and Esthetics students had the privilege of listening to a motivating and inspiring presentation from Charles Marcus, internationally reknown motivational speaker, best-selling author, and former cosmetologist from Canada. This was Mr. Marcus' third year coming to talk to our students about how to be successful in our industry and in life. Since Thanksgiving break, all of the students in the Cosmetology department have participated in "Thankful Tuesday." The students were allowed to wear jeans with their uniform jacket on Tuesdays if they brought in non-perishable food items to be delivered to the Women's Shelter in Flint. Each week, Andrea Blankinship, full-time cosmetology instructor, would deliver the food to the Shelter. The residents were extremely thankful for the gifts of food. MCC Gardening Association Advisor Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez tells us that the Rainforest Retreat will be held on Friday, Jan. 22 from 4 to 8 pm in the Event Center. She describes the event as a relaxing opportunity to dine and network with like-minded professionals, learn about the rainforests and enjoy some of its treasures. There will be games and prizes and you can even hug a Fur Real baby chimpanzee. Professor Emeritus Lee Pelton has four music videos on Youtube. Just type in Lee Pelton and his videos will appear. "Unfortunately, the sound is somewhat tinny due to the compression of the data on Youtube," he adds. MCC to Offer Green Construction Course MCC Emergency Notification System Going Green is everywhere, and we hear that phrase everyday – in the news, at the workplace, around political circles, representing the global efforts aimed at protecting and conserving our environment and natural resources to provide a sustainable future. Going Green entails a new focus on energy independence and sustainability, and green construction is a big part of that focus. Mott Community College is offering a new course on green construction, scheduled to begin Jan. 16. This short course will be offered on three successive Saturdays on Jan.16, 23 and 30, from 8 am to 5 pm. The cost is $295. Class size is limited. Call 762-0589 for more information or to register. Green construction involves the practice of creating and building structures utilizing processes that are environmentally-friendly and cost-effective. MCC's new course treats all aspects of the subject, from its early history and concepts, to its methods and processes, to its various current standards and certifications. In addition to exploring the positive environmental impact and the energy conservation potential of green construction, the MCC course will cover cost/benefit considerations; the new codes, standards and professional credentials that come with it, and how green construction can impact the residential, commercial/industrial and heavy/civil segments of the industry. This course is recommended for architects, engineers, construction managers, construction field superintendents, residential home builders and remodelers, construction material suppliers, building tradesmen, county and municipal planners and regulators, high school teachers, building construction students and any individual with an interest in green construction. "Having knowledge of the buzz words associated with green construction will give the individuals who take this course enough background to be able to make reasonably educated policy decisions about funding allocations at the government level, curriculum development at the educational institution level, and business project and professional development decisions at the construction industry level," said Charles Lafayette, MCC Workforce Innovation in Regional Development (WIRED) Grants Coordinator. "Green Construction also shows potential to be a significant catalyst for economic and job growth." Mott Community College is now utilizing a system to rapidly communicate with students, faculty and staff in the event of an emergency. In addition to sending emergency alerts to anyone with a College-provided email account, MCC has the capability of sending communications via voice mail and text messages to home, work and/or cellular telephones. The system is currently active and ready for use. In order to receive emergency text messages and voice mail alerts, you must provide emergency contact information by clicking on the WebAdvisor located on the home page of the MCC website: www.mcc.edu. You can call the MCC Information Technology Services Help Desk at (810) 762-4357 if you have questions or problems with signing up to receive the emergency alerts. All MCC students, faculty and staff can receive emergency notification through the existing College voice mail and email systems. However, only those who have provided the MCC Emergency Notification System with cell phone information can be contacted via text messages. Emergency messages will be distributed by the MCC Public Safety Department or other authorized College staff members who typically deal with campus emergencies. Students, faculty and staff will be notified by a combination of email, voice and text messages on the nature of the emergency, what action to take, if necessary, and how to access further information. In addition, The Mott Community College Emergency Notification System will be tested on the second Tuesday of each semester. The MCC Emergency Notification System is specifically designed to enhance campus-wide communication through multiple points of contact. The Emergency Notification System helps MCC maintain its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the College community by taking necessary steps to broaden its reach of emergency communications. Please note that MCC will not be responsible for costs incurred from cell phone carriers.
