MCC President Dick Shaink sign the partnership agreement
Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint have a long history of forming
partnerships to better the educational opportunities for area students. Now, the two schools have created
Mott2UM-Flint, a new joint admission, concurrent enrollment program that will provide an innovative
higher education option for students in the region.
The Mott2UM-Flint program was unveiled on May 11, at the MCC Event Center. At the signing was
MCC President M. Richard Shaink, UM-Flint Chancellor Ruth J. Person and Dr. Vahid Lofti, Associate
Provost and Dean of Graduate Programs, representing Provost Gerard Voland, and MCC Vice President
of Academic Affairs Amy L. Fugate.
The new program allows students to attend classes at UM-Flint and MCC at the same time,
allowing them to combine credits to maximize financial aid eligibility. A major benefit of this program is
the expanded course selection it gives the student, providing them with the opportunity to decrease the
time to completion for their associate and bachelor degrees. Other benefits include:
• Admission to both institutions through one free online application
• Expanded course selection — including online courses offered by both institutions
• The option to complete an associate degree while working toward a bachelor's degree
• Coordinated advising — UM-Flint and MCC work together to keep students on track to reach
their educational goals
• Access to student activities and resources on all campuses, including UM-Flint housing
• Reverse transfer — students may transfer UM-Flint credits back to MCC to fulfill associate
degree requirements.
"Mott Community College and the University of Michigan-Flint have entered into yet another strategic partnership, specifically designed to provide mutual support to our students," said Dr. Shaink. "This
collaboration increases our capacity to encourage students to consider UM-Flint as an excellent option
for them to pursue advanced degrees in cutting-edge fields."

From Curriculum Systems
Coordinator Michele Traver:
The College Professional Study
Committee (CPSC) has approved the
offering of a new certificate program,
CADD/CAM, to be offered in the Technology
Division. This new certificate will provide students with a crossover
skill set that encompasses CADD (computer aided drafting and design) and CAM (computer aided manufacturing). This certificate will
allow the learner to develop skills in building parametric models and
the translation process that is employed to generate required output for
advanced manufacturing.
Music Instructor/Ensemble Director Mari Straith Yancho
provides a report from her area. The MCC Guitar Ensemble
performed at the Bear Bistro Monday, April 25 from 5 to 6 p.m. The
program consisted of a variety of musical styles; classical, Spanish,
jazz, and arrangements, created specifically for the ensemble by director Mari Straith Yancho and ensemble members Dave Ives and Keith
Fleetwood. “Some in the audience came especially for the performance, while others were Bistro patrons who stayed to enjoy the show,”
adds Mari. “The program was well received, and the Guitar Ensemble
(who played at the grand opening of the Bistro) hopes to continue its
tradition of offering music to MCC through the Bistro setting.” In addition, a smaller group of the Guitar Ensemble provided dinner music
for MCC’s Honors Program Dinner, held April 29 at the Sarvis Conference Center. Members Dave Ives, Kenny McKee, Keith Fleetwood,
and friend and fellow guitarist Dave Crandall performed a medley of
tunes, entertaining participants with both guitar and vocal selections
chosen by the quartet.
Sherry Bradish, Coordinator, Tech Prep and School Career Programs, reports that Okien Peters, Tech Prep College Liaison, became
a U.S. citizen on May 16. Originally from Nigeria, Okien came to the
Flint area in 1996. The Judge reminded the 38 participants (representing more than a dozen different countries) of the responsibilities of
being a US citizen, including learning the English language, voting
and community involvement. Okien Peters has worked with MCC faculty, staff and students to improve transitions from secondary Career
Technical Education programs for students who continue in related
programs at MCC.
English Prof. Heather Sisto and her husband John Mrozik will be
participating in the Flushing Art Fair (ceramics and photography) on
June 4 and Flint Art Fair, June 11-12. She is exhibiting with the Flushing Artists Network at Fandangles during June with a reception, Sunday, June 5 from 1 to 3 pm.

Mott Middle College
Celebrates 20th
Anniversary
Mott Middle College celebrated its 20th year in existence with a
number of special guests and partners who helped to develop and expand the school over the years, during a program held in the MCC
Event Center on May 12.
The Genesee Intermediate School District (GISD) opened Mott
Middle College (MMC), an alternative education option for youth, on
the MCC campus during the 1991-1992 school year. Chery Wagonlander, who has been the principal since the program’s inception, was one
of the primary driving forces behind establishing Mott Middle College.
“I look around and think of this program as “This is Your Life,”
Wagonlander told the audience, which included a host of administrators, faculty, staff, students, as well as a number of leaders and experts
in education. “You’re our guardian angels, all of you.”
Educational leaders at the program included Dr. Shaink; GISD Superintendent Lisa Hagel; State of Michigan School Board President
John Austin and Dr. Cecilia Cunningham, Executive Director of the
Middle College National Consortium, who all made congratulatory remarks. Scott Jenkins, MCC Vice President of Student Services and Administration, served as master of ceremonies for the program. In
addition, Rafael Turner, MCC’s newest Board of Trustees member, was
on hand to present proclamations and resolutions sent from several dignitaries that included U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow, Congressman Dale
Kildee; and members from the House and Senate of Michigan’s delegation. Turner also presented Wagonlander with a proclamation from
Flint Mayor Dayne Walling, declaring Thursday, May 12, 2011 as Mott
Middle College Day in the City of Flint. The Mott Middle College
Concert Band and Choir performed and a video produced by MMC instructor Matthew Osmon featuring Mott Middle College students and
staff was shown. Administrators, faculty and staff from MMC and
MCC were also recognized. The completion of a three-year research
project, which culminated in the school’s story, The Differences That
Make A Difference, was also announced, and is now available as a PDF
file on the website at www.geneseeisd.org; (click on the “schools” tab
and select Mott Middle College from the drop-down menu).
Mott Middle College – among the first of its kind in the country –
has developed into a comprehensive early college high school, helping
students complete college level courses. The program’s track record
has made it a highly-respected ambassador of the middle college/early
high school model, fostering an excellent reputation at the local, state,
and national levels as a technical assistance center to other communities developing and/or opening middle and early colleges. A partnership between the college and the Genesee Intermediate School District,
Mott Middle College, has grown from 120 students its first year to 404
now, with 19 teachers. Recognized as a national model, the school has
won numerous awards from state and national organizations.
Since its creation, the school has served thousands of students,
preparing them for the full integration of high school, college and the
world of work. Wagonlander mentioned that many MCC professors
have indicated that they often can’t tell the difference between MMC
students or MCC students.
“A Mott Middle college student is not a high school student,”
Wagonlander added. “A Mott Middle College student is a college student finishing high school.”
MCC Honors Frances Cleaves
at May Day Celebration
Brian Harding, MCC Instructor takes part in May Day.
Mott Community College honored the life and legacy of the late
Frances E. Cleaves with its 4th Annual May Day Celebration on Monday, May 2, 2011 at the Cleaves Memorial tree, located between the
Curtice-Mott Complex and the Ballenger Field House. The tree was
planted May 1, 2008, in memory of Mrs. Cleaves, a prominent community/labor activist. She was a tireless champion for the causes of working and poor people in the Flint area and beyond. The mother of Flint's
own Mateen Cleaves, a member of Michigan State University's famous
"Flintstones" who lead the MSU Spartans to the 2000 NCAA Basketball Championship, she passed away on Aug. 14, 2007.
A host of family members joined Mateen Cleaves, as well a host of
community and labor leaders, to pay tribute to Frances Cleaves. Tina
Abbott, Secretary-Treasurer of the Michigan AFL-CIO, who also serves
on the Board of Governors at Wayne State University as well as Vice
Chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, served as keynote speaker for
the program. Brian Harding, MCC Assistant Prof. of History, was also
on hand to speak on the significance of May Day, providing background and a detailed account on the origins of May Day.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be here on May Day,” Harding said.
“There are only three colleges that teach a course in labor history in
Michigan: Oakland University, Wayne State University and Mott Community College.”
May Day, synonymous to International Workers' Day, was created
to recognize the economic and social achievements of workers. Also
known and observed as Labor Day in many countries, it's a day for
celebrations by unions and activist groups around the globe. May Day
is also a traditional holiday in many cultures.
