QUOTE OF
THE M ONTH
"An investment in knowledge pays the
best interest."
--Benjamin Franklin
The Mott Community College Alumni Association is bringing back a traditional favorite among
former students – a community dance that alumni have frequently mentioned as one of the most beloved
events of MCC's early years.
"Let's Dance for Mott" will be held on the eve of MCC's graduation, Friday, April 29, from 7:30 to
11:30 pm in the MCC Event Center. This event is open to the public.
Music will be provided by Charles Scales and will feature distinct, diverse styles of ballroom dance
– from urban to traditional to Latin. Tickets are $50 per person. All proceeds from the dance will go to
support the MCC Achieving the Dream Through Alumni Scholarships program.
"The verbal and often written memories of those who attended Flint Junior College (now Mott Community College) frequently include mention of dances where students, faculty and staff met the community on the dance floor for an evening not soon forgotten by anyone in attendance," said Lennetta Coney,
President of the Foundation for Mott Community College. "This year, we want to create a new set of
warm memories for the entire community.”
The effort is being organized by Graduation Dance Co-Chairs Sixto Olivo and Beverly Shomsky,
Foundation for Mott Community College board members. Three expert instructors from the Flint area's
ballroom dancing community will join in the Graduation Dance festivities. They include Tony Caldwell,
Advisor, MCC Ballroomers; Lucille Brown, Member, The Flint Connection Dance Club and Missy Scibilia, President of the Flint Dance Club.
Sponsorship opportunities also are available to help support the Graduation Dance, ranging from
$100 to $2,000. Please call the at (810) 762-0425 or visit www.mcceventsonline.com by Monday, April
11. Sponsors will be recognized in printed materials for the event, in Foundation for Mott Community
College publications, on the website, and listed as gift contributors.
MCC is a member of Achieving the Dream: Community Colleges Count, a national initiative that
seeks to increase student success at community colleges. With support from the Charles Stewart Mott
Foundation, MCC joins 26 other community colleges from around the country as members of Achieving
the Dream, identifying strategies to improve student success, close achievement gaps and increase
retention, persistence, and completion rates. This initiative supports all aspects of student success and
helps to generate dollars for student scholarships. For more information, call (810) 762-0425.
MCC Employee Appreciation Event
Please mark your calendars for MCC's
4th Annual Employee Appreciation Event,
Tuesday April 12 from 2 to 5 pm in the Event
Center. The theme for this year's fun-filled
event is Tastes of Mardi Gras. The program
will include recognition of the 2010 Outstanding Employees of the Month as well as
the announcement of the Outstanding Employee of the Year. Prize drawings and winners of a Mardi Gras Float Contest will be
announced. For more information, contact
HR Services Supervisor Ronda Brinch at

MCC Distinguished
Alumni Program Set
for April 14
Mott Community College is presenting "Mixed Pairs," an exhibition of art at the Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art (MICA) in
Lansing as part of the Lansing art community's monthly "First Sunday
Gallery Walk." This event is free and open to the public.
The exhibit runs through April 26. Gallery hours are 9 am to 5 pm
Monday through Friday and Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm. The MICA
Gallery is located at 1210 Turner Street in Lansing's Old Town district.
The body of work features a diversity of media, including printmaking, photography, painting, graphic design & illustration, and
mixed media created by Mott Community College faculty and students.
MCC faculty members volunteered to exhibit, with the stipulation that
they would then curate a piece of work from one of their current or
former students. This structure inspired the title "Mixed Pairs." Twelve
pairs of MCC faculty and students are participating in the exhibit.
Much like downtown Flint, Old Town has become a center for the
arts and entertainment in the Greater Lansing Area. The neighborhood
is home to many art galleries, boutiques, performance spaces and
restaurants. The Old Town Business & Art Development Association
(OTBADA) / Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art is a 501(c)3
nonprofit organization that catalyzes the revitalization of Lansing's Old
Town historic commercial district through promoting community
development, preserving historic buildings and producing quality art
events and programs. For more information about the MICA Gallery,
call (517) 371-4600 or email info@oldtownarts.org. For more information about MCC's Studio Art, Graphic Design and Photography
Programs, call the Art Office at 762-0443.

MCC's Annual Distinguished Alumni Awards. The program takes place
at 6:30 pm, Thursday April 14, at the MCC Event Center. This year's
