QUOTE OF
THE M ONTH
"Education is the key to unlock the
golden door of freedom."
--George Washington Carver
It's been described as a high-tech, electronic playground; an inventor's dream come true; a place where anyone can make just about anything. Mott Community
College celebrated the opening of its new Digital Fabrication Laboratory, or FABLAB, on Friday, Jan. 21 with an
open house. A host of community leaders, representatives
from the offices of local dignitaries and congressional
members, MCC administrators, faculty, staff and students
joined in the celebration.
The FABLAB is a unique facility giving individuals
an opportunity to turn their ideas into real inventions.
"You're only limited by your own imagination," said
Tom Crampton, MCC's executive dean of regional technology initiatives. The 1,200-square-foot lab, located in
Room 1112 on the first floor of the RTC near the High Bay
area, is filled with bright red cabinets and high-tech, digital
prototyping equipment. The new lab — based on a model
created at MIT — gives students, businesses and residents
access to CAD software, vinyl cutting, laser cutting, shaping and rapid prototyping that can transform a design from the computer into a 3-D plastic prototype in
hours. "There are a lot of people with creative ideas and they need a place to get those
creative ideas out of their heads and into their hands," Crampton said. "You may have the next great idea.
When you see a problem and say 'why didn't someone do it this way ...' you can be the person who does.
When we were looking at what the community was doing to support entrepreneurs, this was a gap."
MCC is planning to refer people to a network of other community resources playing a role in
fostering entrepreneurship. MCC also expects the FABLAB to support the overall efforts of the Genesee
Regional Chamber of Commerce Entrepreneurship Team (e-TEAM) and its partners to support both individuals and companies interested in expanding or creating new businesses. The college will make the
FABLAB available through two models – a college credit course for current students and a variety of
non-credit workshops for
individuals from the community.
Costs for the college credit course
will align with MCC's published tuition/fees rates while the non-credit
workshops start at $59 and increase
according to the amount of access
time needed and product development support required to interact
with FABLAB software and equipment. For more
information about the FABLAB
at MCC, call (810) 232-4553.

Here's news from the Mott
Library. Library Director Kathy
Irwin was recently appointed by former Gov. Jennifer Granholm
to serve a three-year term on the Library of Michigan Board of
Trustees beginning December 2010. The Library of Michigan, a
division within the Department of Education, promotes, advocates
and consistently works to achieve the highest level of library service to the State of Michigan, its government, its libraries and its
residents. The board is comprised of 13 members including two
members from the Michigan House of Representatives, two members from the Michigan Senate, the Superintendent of Public Instruction or his designee, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court
or his designee, five librarians appointed by the Governor, and
two members of the general public appointed by the Governor.
The purpose of the Library of Michigan Board of Trustees is to
make recommendations and provide council regarding what services the Library of Michigan shall provide, matters of general policy concerning the library, the budget for the library, proposed
rules governing operations of the library, and the appointment of
the State Librarian.
Megan Brown, the Library's new circulation staff assistant
has several years experience working at both university and public
libraries. "She is proving to be a quick learner," says Mott Library
Director Kathy Irwin. "We are pleased to have her as part of our
team!"
Librarian Jessica Himstedt had a baby girl on Jan. 2, 2011,
Quinn Harper, 6 lbs, 14 oz. "Jessica and Quinn are doing well, and
we hope that Jessica can return to work in late February or early
March," adds Kathy.
English Prof. Greg Shafer has an essay, "Conferencing and
Compassion for an Exceptional Student" that will be published in

Sgt. Nancy Metcalfe provides a report on the Collegiate Holiday Food Drive. MCC collected $622.25. A thank-you note from
Bill Kerr, President of the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan, contained the following sentiment: "The Food Bank of Eastern Michigan is helping hungry families and addressing this increase thanks
to your generous support. Together, with our 400 partner agencies,
the Food Bank is able to provide six meals to those in need for
every dollar donated. We would not be able to continue the mission of alleviating hunger in our community without your generosity and that of our partners. Your generous gift of $622.25 will
make a significant difference in the lives of those who have found
their families, some for the very first time, in need – restoring
confidence and dignity as they help support themselves and their
famlies during these difficult times. Thank you, again, for working
with us to "change the Face of Hunger."

MCC-sponsored "CSI:
Crime Scene Insects"
exhibit at Sloan Museum
The Sloan Museum exhibit, CSI: Crime Scene Insects delves into
the mysterious and fascinating world of crime-solving forensic entomology. On display at the Museum until May 8, this exhibit uses
hands-on learning stations, examples of real field and lab equipment
and intriguing case studies. Visitors can discover the stages of a fly's
life and examine hundreds of insect specimens through the Fly Wheel,
a sculpture that uses light to show the progression in an interesting
way. The exhibit also explains the job of a forensic entomologist —
from the types of cases they investigate to the tools they use — including how their findings come into play in the courtroom. Visitors also
can explore the five stages of decomposition as they open morgue
drawers to view models of corpses in each stage. They can then apply
this information to mock investigations and see if they discover the
same details as someone investigating an actual crime. Special public
activities will include Super Science Saturdays, when students from
Mott Community College will help visitors with special hands-on experiments. Public programs during March and April on Thursday
evenings will include a professional handwriting and document
examiner and fascinating topics used in solving crimes. Sloan Museum
hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Saturdays and noon to 5
p.m. Sundays. Admission is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for ages 3
to 11. It is free for children 2 and younger, Mott Community College
students and faculty and annual pass holder members. Visit SloanLongway.org or call (810) 237-3450 for more information.
