Rising from those humble beginnings, to achieving his first huge success, the Hip-Hop inspired FUBU (For Us, By Us) clothing line, to starring in ABC's hit reality business show "Shark Tank," John has become one of the most highly-respected business experts in America. John will deliver the keynote address, headlining the second installment of the 2012 Mott Community College Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series entitled "Create, Build, Succeed: An Entrepreneurship Conference" at 7 pm, Thursday, Nov. 1, 2012 in the Mott Community College Ballenger Field House. This event is free and open to the public. The first session of the 2012 Ballenger Lecture Series on business and entrepreneurship featured Flint native David Tarver as the keynote speaker. Tarver, author of the memoir Proving Ground and an engineer who created a multi-million dollar telecommunications company, also joined a number of local entrepreneurs presenting workshops to share their individual successes and challenges. The November 1 Ballenger program will also feature sessions for business students, as the series will continue through 2013 with appearances by national and local business leaders, culminating in a "Shark Tank"-style business competition. The Ballenger Lecture Series has brought dozens of renowned national and international leaders to the Mott Community College main campus in Flint for decades. In recent years, the series presented lectures by renowned filmmaker/director Spike Lee; Lech Walesa, former President of Poland and founder of the Polish Solidarity Movement; legendary entertainer/activist Harry Belafonte, poet/singer Patti Smith and prominent civil rights attorney Morris Dees. IMA Recreation Association to honor MCC president Mott Community College President Dick Shaink will be honored at the IMA Recreation Association 10th annual Community Salute on Oct. 25 at the IMA Brookwood Golf & Banquet Center in Burton. The 2012 Community Salute to Dr. Shaink continues a tradition of honoring influential community members while raising funds for the non-profit organization. Tickets are $100 per person with sponsorship opportunities starting at $250. The program is scheduled for 6:30 to 7:30 pm, with a cocktail reception preceding the event at 5:30 pm. The IMA Recreation Association is a non-profit organization that offers recreational activities for children and adults in the Genesee County community. Around Campus Lisa Poma, Executive Assistant, President's Office, has been nominated for the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) Professional Board Staff Member Award, presented to a board staff member in recognition of exemplary service to a board. An award winner is chosen from each of the ACCT's five regions. Those winners will gather at the 2012 Leadership Congress in Boston where they will receive their regional awards, and then the national winner will be announced. Theatre Instructor Dan Gerics, who runs Flint City Theatre (FCT), lets us know that FCT will present Flint Zombie Walk 2012 on Oct. 13 downtown Flint. It's a fundraising event benefitting Michigan School for the Deaf, organized by former MCC ASL student Kristina Lakey and interpreted for the deaf by MCC instructor Carie Sarver. Art Prof. John Dempsey tells us that a piece of his art, created in MCC's FABLAB, is on exhibit during Grand Rapid's ArtPrize through Oct. 7. Domestic violence survivor to share her story at MCC Health Fair, Oct. 11 Johnnetta McSwain, the CEO and founder of Breaking the Cycle, Beating the Odds, an organization that empowers women to break negative, self-destructive cycles that keep them from reaching their full potential, will be on hand to present highlights of her life at Real Health for a Whole Community, a free, interactive health fair to help people identify ways to adopt healthier lifestyles, at 12 noon Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012 at the Mott Community College Event Center. McSwain is scheduled to make a brief presentation during the Health Fair, reading excerpts from her autobiography Rising Above the Scars. That presentation will be followed with a book signing in the Event Center lobby. For a more in-depth look into the life and struggles of Johnnetta McSwain, who was featured in the Emmy-Award winning documentary The Road Beyond Abuse narrated by actress/activist Jane Fonda, please attend McSwain's presentation scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, in the Mott Memorial Building auditorium. A book signing also will be included immediately following this presentation. The Real Health for a Whole Community health fair is slated for 11 am to 4 pm at the Mott Community College Event Center, adjacent to the Mott Library. This event, including the Johnnetta McSwain presentations, is sponsored by the Foundation for Mott Community College, in collaboration with the Universal Kidney Foundation, the Arab American Heritage Council and Jewish Community Services, and is free and open to the public. Update on Articulation Agreements at MCC Articulation agreements serve as a bridge and give MCC students additional options, such as two years of coursework at MCC and one year at the college or university (2+2), or three years at MCC and one year at the college or university (3+1). These agreements specify a course taking plan, that when followed by a student at MCC, results in a seamless transfer of credits for the student to their program of study at the university. Recent, new or updated articulation agreements include: • An agreement with Ferris State University in the Hotel Management Degree Program. Students who have completed degree requirements in MCC's Culinary Arts program may apply to the Bachelor’s program at Ferris. The hotel industry leads the service segment of our economy with continued expansion and opportunities abounding. Hotel Management students are prepared for management, sales and marketing opportunities in the hotel industry by course work that combines theory with authentic hands-on learning experiences. Students may complete three years at Mott College and complete their degree with an additional year at Ferris. The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Growth projects a nearly 20% increase in the number of graphic design jobs in the state by 2012. CMU offers classes ranging from typography and print design to web design and design animation. It has been at the forefront of contemporary issues relating to socially relevant design, and has placed students in internships across the United States and overseas. This agreement is for students who have earned an Associate in Applied Science – Fire Protection Technology degree from Mott Community College. This agreement benefits students interested in working in the public sector or human services, as students who complete this degree are prepared for careers in local, state and federal administration and more. October 8 MCC's 20th Annual Peace and Dignity program, featuring the People of the Four Colors ceremony, is scheduled for 10 am on the lawn outside Mott Memorial Building, facing Court St. Directly descended from Native American rituals, the program features the People of the Four Colors ceremony and rededication of the Peace and Dignity Tree.
