MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONNECTION SEPTEMBER 2012 Mott Community College announces new online Career Coach MCC FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLETTER WHAT’S INSIDE AROUND CAMPUS MCC ALERTS STUDENTS OF AMERICAN OPPORTUNITY TAX CREDIT MCC PRESENTS THE FIRST ANNUAL STUDENT SHORT FILM FESTIVAL MCC AT 6TH ANNUAL BIKES ON THE BRICKS EVENT QUOTE OF THE M ONTH “Leadership should be born out of the understanding of the needs of those who would be affected by it. ” – Marian Anderson Mott Community College has unveiled its brand new Career Coach, a free, user-friendly online tool that allows students and community members to explore potential careers and job opportunities. The new Career Coach website helps students and job seekers figure out what skills they need for available jobs – and where to get them if they don't have them. The site is specifically designed to help individuals explore careers by providing information on wages, employment, job postings, and educational and training opportunities in the region. Career Coach can help take some of the uncertainty out of choosing a career and a major. Users can access the latest data on area jobs, salaries, employment trends as well as find links to MCC career programs. An added feature of Career Coach is a resume builder designed to give students and jobseekers an edge in today's highly competitive job market. While the website is geared toward the MCC student, jobseekers from the community and students from other institutions also may find Career Coach useful. This free and useful career planning and employment service is provided by MCC, using the data tools developed by Economic Modeling Specialists (EMSI). Check out MCC's Career Coach at careercoach.mcc.edu. Launch Party for MCC's new AFA degree set for Oct. 2 The Fine Arts & Social Sciences Division at Mott Community College is inviting faculty, staff and students, as well as the entire community, to join them in celebrating the college's newest degree offering: the Associate in Fine Arts (AFA) degree, with majors in Music and Studio Art. The AFA Launch Party will be held in the Event Center from 4 to 7 pm on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012, with a program scheduled for 5 pm. This event, which is free and open to the public, will feature musical performances, entertainment and art exhibits by MCC students. Refreshments will be served, and there will be door prizes and giveaways. Local arts organizations and several universities will have informational tables. The AFA degree at MCC prepares students who plan to transfer to fine arts programs at the junior level of four-year institutions when they have completed the fundamental core curriculum at the community college level. The Associate in Fine Arts – Studio Art is specifically designed for students who plan to transfer to a university or art school to major in art or design. This degree focuses on art foundation classes and general education requirements that will transfer to other institutions. The Associate in Fine Arts Degree – Music is designed for students to transfer to a university, college or conservatory and major in music. The primary focus is on music foundation classes and general education requirements that will transfer to other institutions. For more information about the AFA Launch Party or the degree, call 7620332. d Ca m p us Honors Program Coordinator Brian Ivory gives us an update on the Mott Campus Clowns. The troupe was in Philadelphia in March, and was asked to make a cameo appearance in a music video by the performer, BoCo. The music video, titled "Nobody Special" was shot on the steps of the famous Philadelphia Museum of Art. Produced by Greene Films, the video is now available on YouTube. English Prof. Heather Sisto attended a "Yoga as Muse-Creative Writing Retreat" in New Harmony, Indiana, led by English Instructor Cathy Shap, Dave DeGoyler and Terry Price. Cathy is one of our adjunct English faculty members who is a published poet and yoga instructor. Heather also has some new photos on display at the Greater Flint Arts Council (GFAC) as part of the Flint Artists Market group exhibit until the first week of Sept. History Instructor Clare Monsour tells us that her Summer II World History class went to the Flint Institute of Arts. The museum staff guided the class through a tour of the historical exhibits at the FIA, specifically their featured exhibit, "The Golden Age of Painting." The exhibit focused on European paintings from 1600-1800s. The tour was free for all because of the relationship the FIA has with Mott Community College. English Instructor Wendy Byard's book, Teach and Reach for Classroom Miracles! Lessons on Teaching With Love, will be featured in an article in the upcoming issue of Women2Women Michigan Maga- Arou n MCC Alerts Students of American Opportunity Tax Credit Mott Community College wants students to be aware of an extra credit the federal government offers as a reward for pursuing higher education. The American Opportunity Tax Credit, unlike past federal tax credits, has a "refundable" portion of up to $1,000. This means that a tax filer could get a check for up to $1,000 over and above any amounts paid in through withholding or estimated payments. While many students at Mott Community College qualify for financial aid and grants, there are a number of students who will pay or borrow for tuition and other educational expenses via payment plans, cash, checks, student loans or credit cards. MCC wants current and prospective students to know that the American Opportunity Tax Credit, allowing a federal tax credit of $1,000 to $2,500, is available for out-of-pocket payments for tuition, fees and required class supplies. According to the IRS and the U.S. Department of Education, a number of tax filers fail to take advantage of the higher education tax benefits available to them. The American Opportunity Tax Credit can be claimed for expenses for the first four years of post-secondary education, which includes expenses for course-related texts, books and supplies. Taxpayers can receive a tax credit based on 100 percent of the first $2,000, plus 25 percent of the next $2,000, paid during the taxable year for tuition, fees and course materials. Generally, a taxpayer whose modified adjusted gross income is $80,000 or less ($160,000 or less for joint filers) can claim the credit for the qualified expenses of an eligible student. And with MCC's low tuition rates, $2,500 would go a lot further than it would at most colleges. Also, since Wendy's term as trustee on the Lapeer School Board expires this year, she is running for election Nov. 6. As a trustee, she serves on the Teaching, Learning, and Technology and Student Advocacy Committees. "We are proud of our efforts this past year," Wendy adds. "We opened our year-round elementary school -- Turrill Elementary – Aug. 1. We also recently began training our coaches in CPR/AED and mandated IMPACT Testing (concussion) for our athletes. We implemented the Coaches Advancement Program through the Michigan High School Athletic Association for our coaches. Last, we will open our virtual learning academy this year." Interpreter Training Instructor Isabel Florence spent the summer presenting at workshops related to training deaf/blind clients in self-advocacy and in training interpreters working with deaf/blind clients. Vikrant Ahuja joined the Green Initiatives Team at its inception. He has participated in the UM-Flint recycling program tour, clean ups, This Is Litter Too Campaign and MCC's annual Fall Rally. He has also met with students numerous times to implement student recycling initiatives. One of the biggest supporters of the "College Recycling Challenge," Vikrant most recently participated in the community beautification effort at Kearsley Park, as the team worked to weed, and clean up debris on Robert T. Longway. "Vikrant is most deserving of this award because of his dedication, congeniality and creativity in working on GRiT initiatives," said Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez, Marketing Assistant/Web Content manager who also co-chairs the Green Initiatives Team. "He attends every GRiT function or offers to help with some aspect of it whether it be research-based, or actually getting his hands dirty picking up trash. He doesn't shy away from the challenge. He also looks for ways that his department or others can contribute and has shared others' achievements -- a true quality of a leader. " The Greeny Award was implemented by the Green Initiatives Team (GRiT) to recognize and promote the sustainable green initiatives at Mott Community College. If you know someone who is going the extra mile to recycle, implementing cost saving programs that help reduce waste or providing educational outcomes related to green initiatives, please email the team at GRiT@mcc.edu. GRiT would like to recognize their efforts.
