MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE CONNECTION AUGUST 2012 MCC offers new degree with emphasis in art and music MCC FACULTY & STAFF NEWSLETTER WHAT’S INSIDE AROUND CAMPUS 2012 MCC EMPLOYEE SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT A HIT IMA RECREATION ASSOCIATION HONORS MCC PRESIDENT GROT ANNOUNCES MAY & JUNE GREENY AWARD WINNERS QUOTE OF THE M ONTH “Never interrupt someone doing something you said couldn't be done.” – Amelia Earhart A new degree program that gives students an exciting opportunity to nurture their creative side will be offered by Mott Community College starting with the Fall 2012 semester. The Associate in Fine Arts (AFA), complete with tracks in Music and Studio Art, is designed to prepare students for transfer to fine arts programs at the junior level of four-year institutions when they have completed the fundamental core curriculum at the community college level. The Associate in Fine Arts Degree – Studio Art is specifically designed for students who plan to transfer to a university or art school to major in art or design. The AFA degree focuses on art foundation classes and general education requirements that will transfer to other institutions, incorporating classes that are easily transferable to a variety of institutions – both universities and art schools – with enough flexibility for advisors to recommend MCC Music Student courses that particular transfer schools may require. Estephanie Ward The Associate in Fine Arts Degree – Music is designed for students to transfer to a university, college or conservatory and major in music. The primary focus is on music foundation classes and general education requirements that will transfer to other institutions. With the addition of the Associate in Fine Arts Degree—Music, students who are majoring in music will have a credential based on degree requirements established by the National Association of Schools of Music. Mott Community College is part of a growing number of community colleges across the nation offering the AFA for students who plan to continue their studies toward earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree and ultimately a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) or Doctor of Music Arts (DMA). In October 2011, the College Art Association approved and published a two-year study on the topic of the AFA entitled "Standards and Guidelines for the Associate of Fine Arts Degree in Studio Art." "All of the criteria are clearly stated – especially the general principles and goals of the AFA degree – and we meet all of them," stated Mary Cusack, Dean of the MCC Fine Arts and Social Sciences Division. "It was important for MCC to adopt the AFA degree in order to keep current with the standards and practices of other community colleges nationwide, and to provide our students with the strongest opportunity for success in fine arts careers." Students who gravitate toward study in the arts tend to think differently and creatively, and the AFA provides them with a clear pathway for future success in education and in their careers as artists and musicians. "The AFA we're offering gives them a specific curriculum to follow, providing a seamless transition to the four-year institution," she continued. "The AFA leads to the BFA. Now, a student can say 'I'm studying music or I'm studying art – I'm pursuing this as a field of study.' That's important. It makes a big difference to them." The Flint/Genesee County area has always embraced the Fine Arts programs at MCC. "We get contacted all of the time with requests for art and music students to perform or exhibit," Cusack added. "The AFA program represents an enhancement to the quality of life that's already here. The Flint community supports the arts and values the arts." A launch party to celebrate the offering of the new AFA degree is planned for Tuesday, Oct. 2 in the MCC Event Center. Additional details will be forthcoming. For more information about the AFA degree, call (810) 762-0332 d Ca m p us Sherry Bradish, Director Tech Prep & School-to-Career Programs, brings us information about CATEMA™ (Career & Technical Education Management Application), a software program that MCC is using cooperatively with our secondary partners in Genesee and Shiawassee Counities. CATEMA allows the college to validate articulated credits earned by students in CTE programs while in high school when they continue in a related program of study at MCC. CATEMA will also improve Perkins reporting at the secondary and postsecondary levels. Over 70 MCC users (advisors, counselors, program coordina- Arou n tors, registrar's staff, institutional research staff) have been trained to use CATEMA for their work with students and/or to meet reporting requirements. English Prof. Heather Sisto lets us know that John Mrozik, Prof. Emeritus in the Humanities Dept., won "Best of Show" and "Best Ceramics" prizes in Ludington Arts Council juried exhibit on June 29. Chief Human Resources Officer Mark Kennedy recently completed training required to enable him to administer the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) assessment. This assessment identifies valuable differences between individuals, differences that can be the source of much misunderstanding and miscommunication. Mark adds: "If you would like to learn more about the MBTI, a workshop will be offered through CTL during Fall Welcome Back activities." New Employees: MCC welcomes William Meyer and Felicia Davis, both part-time police officers; start date: July 8, 2012. Welcome to the MCC family! Charlie’s Angels Crowned 2012 MCC Employee Softball Champions After a rain-suspended softball tournament, Charlie’s Angles went on to win its first game over the Faculty Advising Retention Team (F.A.R.T) by a score of 7-6, then beat last year’s Champions, Public Saftey 13-7 to capture their 2nd Championship in three years. In the “Not Really Losers” bracket the Mott Official Financial Office Student Services (MOFOSS) defeated Mottley Crew in their first game, then went on to defeat Leonard’s All-Stars to take home the consolation trophy. Simulation Training Several City of Flint police officers received training with simulators for a Police Officer Advance Responder course at the Institute for Medical Simulation at the MCC Southern Lakes Branch Center on July 26. The training focused on first aid basics and CPR/AED for adults, children and infants. This course introduced the Officers to the concepts of safely providing assistance and advance care to sick or injured persons. They were given scenarios of actual emergencies that are commonplace for Police Officers. After completion of the course, the officers received a two-year American Heart Association certification in First Aid and CPR/AED. GRiT announces May and June Greeny Award Winners Congratulations are in order for Dawn Vanniman, Student Life Coordinator and Lt. Michael Becker, Coordinator of Public Safety Health Services. Dawn is the May Greeny Award winner, due to her efforts to make graduation a more eco-friendly experience. Dawn was not fond of the heavy, shiny black graduation gowns that the College had been purchasing. So, this year she asked vendors if there were any alternatives and was sent a sample of the "Greenweaver" line of caps and gowns that are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. "Kudos to Dawn for thinking "Green" and making this affordable to students," said Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez, Marketing Assistant/Web Content manager, who also co-chairs the Green Initiatives Team (GRiT). Lt. Michael Becker was selected as the June Greeny Award winner for successfully coordinating the drug take-back program on April 28, 2012. This event, coordinated with the Drug Enforcement Agency, is held on a semi-annual basis. A block of time is set aside on the day of the event in which anyone can bring in their unwanted prescription drugs and deposit them into a secure box. Over 10 pounds of prescription drugs were collected and sent to Detroit to be incinerated. The Greeny Award was implemented by the Green Initiatives Team to recognize and promote the sustainable green initiatives at Mott Community College. If you know someone who is going the extra mile to recycle, implementing cost saving programs that help reduce waste or providing educational outcomes related to green initiatives, please email the team at GRiT@mcc.edu. GRiT would like to recognize the individual(s) for their efforts.
