Mott Community College's Rebecca
Gale-Gonzalez Named Finalist in
Governor's Service Awards
Rebecca Gale-Gonzalez is one of five finalists for "Volunteer
of the Year" in the 2012 Governor's Service Awards. Gale-Gonzalez, marketing assistant/web content manager, was among the 40
finalists announced by Governor Rick Snyder on June 7, selected
from more than 130 individuals, businesses, and nonprofit
organizations from across the state who were nominated for their
commitment to volunteer service.
"Michigan is rich with a culture of volunteerism and service
that makes our state a great place to live, work, and play," stated
Governor Snyder in a news release. "As we celebrate the 40
finalists who will be recognized at the 2012 Governor's Service
Awards, we also salute the impact and service of all of Michigan's
amazing volunteers and thank them for their contribution to our
state."
The 2012 Governor's Service Awards finalists will be honored at an awards ceremony
entitled, "An Evening with the Stars" on Monday, July 23, at the Gem Theatre in Detroit, a
theatre-style event highlighting award presentations and featuring performances by Michigan
musical artists and performers, all paying tribute to the honorees.
Here's a description of the Volunteer of the Year Award category from the governor's office:
"When it comes to solving community problems, individuals really make things happen.
These everyday citizens are very special people who go the extra mile for their community.
This award is reserved for an individual who strives to improve the lives of neighbors, friends,
community, or congregation. Individuals nominated for this award could be adults, national
service members, educators, and more."
"What a pleasure it is to bring awareness to Becky’s extraordinary efforts as a community
advocate and environmental steward," said Michael Kelly, Executive Director of Public
Information, her supervisor.
The Governor's Service Awards, an annual statewide recognition event acknowledging the
contributions made by Michigan volunteers, is coordinated by the Michigan Community Service
Commission (MCSC), the state's lead agency on volunteerism. It is part of the Michigan
Department of Human Services.

MCC's Department of
Public Safety was awarded a
$4,500 grant from the Hundred
Club of Genesee, Shiawassee
and Lapeer Counties Hundred
Club on "Heroes' Night," an
awards dinner and program
held on Tuesday June 26, 2012
at the Flint Golf Course. Chief
Theresa Stephens-Lock, MCC
Public Safety Director, and
Public Safety Supervisor James
Malcolm were on hand at the event to
receive the check presented by the Hundred Club. MCC's Department
of Public Safety was one of 26 police and fire departments in the tricounty area to receive grants for equipment. The grant will be used to
purchase body armor for ten of our police officers.
Here's more good news from Public Safety. Sgt. Richard Vickrey
has completed the Michigan State University School of Staff and
Command, graduating from their class of 2012. Staff and Command is
charged with building the capacity of Michigan law enforcement organizations through the development of staff and command personnel,
utilizing teaching methods that allow students to self-discover the
knowledge and skills they require in a way that builds on the gifts they
already possess. Graduates learn how to work safely, think critically,
and adopt problem-solving skills. The program is a 400- hour, problem-based course using a blend of cutting-edge distance learning and
classroom settings. Congratulations to Sgt. Vickrey!
Counselor/Professor Angela Reeves was a presenter at the Annual
Lilly Conference on College and University Teaching in Washington,
DC, that was held May 31 through June 3. Her proposal, "Creating
Greater Classroom Effectiveness by Incorporating an Ethnic Perspective," was accepted as a 60-minute presentation. "There were a large
number of proposals for concurrent sessions and poster presentations
submitted this year, and they were able to accommodate only 77% of
applicants primary requests following a peer, blind review process,"
she adds. "Proposals came from 34 different states and ten different
countries. The presentation was well received!"

Workforce Development's Lorie Dumond brings news from the
Workforce Development—Workforce Education Center. White House
Business Council Senior officials met with a group of business leaders,
that included Workforce Development Director Robert Matthews on
June 1. The purpose of these discussions was two-fold: 1) to get feedback on what the Obama Administration can be doing more, or less, to
help create jobs; and 2) to make sure that businesses are aware of the
programs and resources that can help their businesses grow and succeed.
The Council for Resource Development (CRD) connects, educates, supports, strengthens and celebrates community college development professionals. Robert Matthews and Executive Director, Grant
Development Judith Cawhorn hosted a webinar on June 13 for CRDs
2012 Summer Program titled, "A Model for Funding Robust Best Practice Workforce Programming." Robert is serving on the Governor's
Flint Advisory Group which met on June 18. This group consists of
Flint business, government, faith-based, education and community
stakeholders. The input of this decision-making group will serve as a
significant influence on the work of the Governor's Office of Urban
and Metropolitan Initiatives as we move forward in establishing an
Urban Agenda for the State of Michigan. The Governor's Flint Advisory Group is also in the process of establishing similar groups in Detroit, Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Robert also met with the Student
Financial Stability Learning Community with the Center for Law and
Social Policy (CLASP) on June 27. At this convening, leaders began to
work together to improve understanding of strategies for helping lowincome students access a range of financial resources to improve the
likelihood of college completion. The group also discussed the overlaps and interactions among these strategies.
