Schmidt is receiving the Honorary Alumni Award. The other recipients are: Radio Personality Stephanie K. Confer of WWCK-FM (CK 105.5); Ohio Business owner John K. Krupp, CPA; Genesee County Land Bank Outreach Coordinator Raynetta Speed and former Detroit Pistons guard Justus Thigpen, Sr. Family and friends of this year's honorees are invited to take part in the recognition. Tickets for the dinner program are $40 per person with proceeds going to MCC's Alumni Student Assistance Scholarship. According to Lennetta Coney, President of the Foundation for Mott Community College, all five individuals were selected by an outside screening committee based upon their outstanding achievements as role models and their inspiration of excellence in others. "This year's recipients are especially inspiring considering the positive impact they each have had on our community and our college," Coney said. "So much of what Mott Community College represents today is due to the influence and inspiration of these individuals." As Distinguished Alumni, the individuals selected for the recognition will have their photographs hung in the Alumni Room of the MCC Prahl College Center where all of MCC’s honorees are featured. MCC Outstanding Employees of the Year The Mott Community College 5th Annual Employee Appreciation Event was held on April 12, 2012 in the Event Center. The fiesta-themed event featured refreshments, musical entertainment, games and door prizes awarded to several employees. Congratulations to Bernie Cunningham, Science and Mathematics Division and Debbie Killian, Fine Arts and Social Sciences Division, for being selected as this year's Outstanding Faculty and Staff Award Recipients. d Ca m p us Here's news from the Health Sciences Division: Dental Assisting Program faculty Dr. Denise Polk, Deb Jaruzel, Jenette Schanick, and program coordinator Darlene Boersema took students to the Michigan Dental Association's Annual Session on April 20 in Lansing. They accompanied the program's Class of 2012, where they attended Student Day activities and competed in various events. One group of students, Mollie Lindsay, Sabrina Liddell, and Rashelle Pierre, came home with First Place in the Infection Control Video Clip competition. Students from ADA accredited dental assisting programs across the state attend this yearly event, participating in an engaging and all-inclusive program topic that focused on Dental Professionalism in the Age of the Millennial. The student day event also featured the opportunity for dental assisting students from around the state to compete in essays and video competitions. MCC Dental Assisting students won first place in the infection control video competition. The students were awarded a cash price as well as a certificate of participation. From the Dental Hygiene Department: The Community Dentistry class taught by Ronda Smalley teamed up with Mott Children's Dental Health Department and visited five elementary schools in Flint earlier this year. Senior dental hygiene students provided tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional instruction to K3rd grades. In addition, students provided instruction to a Flint Girl Scout troop and the Shelter of Flint. The presentations were a great success. The students were accompanied by Dental Hygiene Instructor Ronda Smalley and Dental Hygiene Instructor Dr. Marjorie Mueller-Harwood, DDS. DisAbility Services Specialist Jeff Simms brings us news about the American Cancer Society's 2012 Relay For Life of Flint, which is scheduled for 2 pm on May 18 - 19, 2012 at Flint Southwestern Academy. English Prof. Greg Shafer has been nominated to the Executive Committee for the Conference on College Composition and Communication. Also, he was part of a panel discussion at CCCCs in St. Louis in March. He delivered a presentation on the future of composition in the two-year college and the need for writing teachers to be writers. Cindy Sanders, Director of the Institute for Medical Simulation at the MCC Southern Lakes Branch Center in Fenton, lets us know that they will be presenting a Family Emergency Preparedness Class on May 22 from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm. History Instructor Aaron Gulyas presented his paper, "Union Jack on the Tail-Fin: Changing Visions of the Future in 1960s Doctor Who" at the Popular Culture Association conference in Boston on April 12. The paper explored the intersection between television science fiction and the broader trends of post-War British culture. He also participated in "Great Battles in American History," a workshop held by the Foreign Policy Research Institute at the First Division Museum in Wheaton, Illinois on April 21 and 22. Arou n Sign Language Interpreter Program Coordinator Stephanie Naeyaert tells us that a deaf hip hop artist from Finland visited Flint and her classes on April 30. Signmark is the group name. The Energy Auditing Class had the opportunity to partner with Habitat For Humanity and conduct tests and analysis on two completed homes in Flint. "One such series of tests verified that a new, very energy-efficient home was lacking sufficient ventilation air for the intended number of occupants and the students made recommendations to correct this," Chuck adds. In addition the Green Building Class has been working as four teams with each designing and specifying a Green Home. The groups have created Power Point presentations for each of the four dwellings and were required to "defend" their designs against challenges by fellow students. Honors Program Coordinator Brian Ivory provides an update on the activities of the Mott Campus Clowns. The troupe made their encore appearance for the semester at the Hurley Annual Benefit Ball, which had a circus theme this year. All eight clowns appeared to greet attendees as they arrived, distributing clown noses and entertaining prior to the start of the program. The group has also been invited to the Michigan Special Olympics in Mt. Pleasant, taking place May 31 to June 2. Art Prof. John Dempsey tells us that MCC painting students will be exhibiting at Good Beans, 328 North Grand Traverse Street in Flint, from May 15 through June 30 with a reception to meet the artists on Friday, May 18, from 6-9 pm. Jeff Wheeler, former MCC public safety officer, had his book signing on March 29 at the Holiday Inn Express on Robert T. Longway. He is the author of Where is Adam: Understanding a Father's Role. Several persons were in attendance, including MCC Director of Public Safety Chief Theresa Stephens-Lock and Chief Alvern Lock, Director of Public Safety for the City of Flint. As promised, since Jeff Wheeler is a former employee of MCC and Dr. HayesScott, the owner of MANA publishing company is a long-term faculty member of MCC, a scholarship will be established for an African-American male student for the upcoming school year. Cosmetology Instructors Andrea Blankinship and Gloria Maclin bring news from the MCC Transitions School of Cosmetology Careers. On April 12, the Cosmetology Program/Transitions Club hosted a "Haircut-a-thon," providing 38 free haircuts and styles. This event was open to all MCC students, faculty and staff. “The Cosmetology students and faculty really enjoyed the learning experience, adds Andrea. Thank you to all who participated.” Theatre Instructor Dan Gerics will be directing a music video for the song "Zombie Slayer," written by Dale Dobson and Dan Gerics, to be performed by MCC Sign Language Interpreting Education student Kristina Lakey. The video will be used to promote Flint Zombie Walk 2012, Flint City Theatre's annual fundraiser. Learning Center Administrative Assistant Sherry Weeder lets us know that Susan Sullivan, Advisor and Special Populations Coordinator from Southwestern Michigan College in Niles, Michigan, nominated Special Populations Coordinator Madonna Carpenter as President-Elect for the Michigan Occupational Special Populations Association (MOSPA). Public Safety Health Services Announces Spring Schedule Nurse practitioners are available to provide a variety of health-related services in the Public Safety Health Services Center. Nurse practitioners are health professionals who have advanced training in diagnosing and treating illness. They are available to do health care consultations and physical examinations during the posted hours. Paramedics are also available to do TB testing. Vaccinations for Tetanus, Measles Mumps Rubella, and Hepatitis-B are also available: TB tests are $10; Tetanus shots are $50; Measles Mumps Rubella shots are $50 and Hep-B vaccinations are $70 each and there is a series of 3. He is the 2012 recipient of Merit Network’s Award for Innovation in Networking and Information Technology. Merit Network President and CEO Donald Welch indicated in a letter addressed to Schapel why he was selected for this honor: "In our role of promoting the advancement of networking in Michigan, Merit seeks to identify and support organizations and individuals that enhance their work through the use of networking and related technology. Our awards program brings recognition to organizations and individuals who are particularly accomplished in this way, both to honor their achievements and to serve as an example and inspiration for others." The awards ceremony will be on Thursday, May 24, 2012. Annual Mott, Motown and More Lip Sync Show A sold-out crowd has prompted an additional showing of MCC's 6th Annual Mott, Motown & More show. An additional show has been added based on swift ticket sales and an overwhelming interest in the event which features lip sync performances by MCC staff and members of the Flint/Genesee County community. The first performance of Mott, Motown & More will be Thursday, May 17, at 7pm in the Mott Memorial Building Auditorium. A Friday, May 18 performance at the same time and location is also scheduled, and will include the exact same line up as the May 17th program. Steve Schmidt Wins National Coach of the Year Award The National Junior Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men's Basketball Coaches Association has announced its 2011-12 Coach and Player of the Year awards for men's basketball, and MCC Bears Head Coach Steve Schmidt was honored as NJCAA Division II Coach of the Year. This is the third time in the last five seasons that Coach Schmidt has been named Coach of the Year, according to the NJCAA. MCC's John Taylor was named the NJCAA Division II National Player of the Year, making the Mott Community College sophomore the fourth player in school history earning NJCAA II Player of the Year honors. Schmidt and Taylor led the Bears to a 35-1 national championship season in 2011-12 -- their eighth appearance at the NJCAA Men's Basketball Championship and a record fourth national championship title.
