QUOTE OF
THE M ONTH
“I was taught that the way of
progress was neither swift nor easy. ”
– Madame Marie Curie
The Mott Community College Bears, and their Coach
Steve Schmidt, are used to
shattering records and making
history. And they did it
again.Making their eighth appearance at the National Junior
College Athletic Association Division II (NJCAA) Men's Basketball Championship March 25
in Danville, Ill., the Bears
claimed a record fourth national
championship title, defeating
the Community College of
Rhode Island 70-60 in a contest where the Bears led from start to finish. MCC now holds more national
championships than any other NJCAA Division II men's basketball
program. The Bears, ranked the number one seed going into the tournament, ended the season with a
35-1 record. Schmidt was named NJCAA Division II Coach of the Tournament and MCC sophomore
guard John Taylor was named the Tournament Most Valuable Player. MCC's sophomore guard Darryl
Marshall and freshman guard Ralph Eason were both named to the All-Tournament Team. In 2008, the
MCC Men's Basketball Team made basketball history when they were crowned national champions for
a third time winning national championships in 2003, 2007 and 2008. At that time, MCC became the
first community college to win three National Junior College Athletic Association Division II national
titles, and the first to win back-to-back championships since 1993. "We are excited to bring this
national championship back to Flint," Schmidt said. "This team did a great job of representing Mott
throughout the year. I would like to thank all of our fans for their support. We genuinely have a special
program that is a privilege for me to be part of."
Ballenger Lecture Series Featuring
Entrepreneurship Set for April 13
The Mott Community College Ballenger Eminent Persons Lecture Series is presenting the program "Create, Build, Succeed – An Entrepreneurship Conference" that will feature a series of workshops, starting with a keynote speech by Flint native, engineer and author David Tarver. The
program is scheduled for Friday, April 13, 2012, from 1 to 5 pm in the Regional Technology Center.
This event is free and open to the public. After the keynote speech, a number of local entrepreneurs
will present workshops on creating and building a business. David Tarver was born and raised in
Flint. He received bachelor and master degrees in electrical engineering from the University of
Michigan in Ann Arbor, then went to work for AT&T Bell Laboratories in Holmdel, New Jersey.
Tarver left Bell Labs in 1983 to start Telecom Analysis Systems (TAS) in his basement with colleagues Steve Moore and Charles Simmons. In 1995, he engineered the sale of TAS to Bowthorpe
(now Spirent) plc for $30 million. The program will continue throughout the year with several public opportunities for local people to present, review and refine business plans, culminating with a
“Shark Tank” business competition next year. MCC Business Professor Lisa Banks has been chosen
as the new faculty Ballenger Chair for this series focusing on entrepreneurship. For more information about the Ballenger Lecture Series, call the Foundation for Mott Community College at 7620425.

Here's news from the Health
Sciences Division: From Nursing
Instructor Mary Beth Schmekel:
Genesys Health System deserves a
great big "thank- you" for allowing their medical documentation
system training module to be accessible at MCC. After considerable input and collaboration from
Genesys' Clinical Applications
Lead Mark Szmigiel and Sue
Hendrix, RN, Mott's Nursing students
are now able to access and learn how to
document assessments and medications right here at MCC. This is done by
using the training module that is kept updated and serviced by Genesys RN
Debra Parsons. The Health Sciences Division also wanted to give a shout
to Marc Smith, Annette LeBlanc, and Randy Schapel for their part in the
acquisition and installation of the Genesys Health System's Electronic
Health Record into CM 2304. In February,
Children's Dental Health
month, the Community Dentistry class taught by Ronda Smalley teamed up
with Mott Children's Dental Health Department to visit five elementary
schools in Flint. Senior dental hygiene students provided tooth brushing,
flossing, and nutritional instruction to K-3rd grades. In addition, students
provided instruction to a Flint Girl Scout troop and the Shelter of Flint. The
presentations were a great success and acknowledgement for a job well done
goes to Ronda Smalley and the Community Dentistry class. Students were
accompanied by Ronda and Dr. Marjorie Mueller-Harwood.
Technology Instructor Chuck Breidenstein brings news from his division. This semester -- for the first time at Mott -- a group a students in the
Building and Construction (BCON) program are learning how to perform
Energy Audits on buildings, including instruction on and hands-on experience with the use of Blower Door Testing, Infra-Red Camera use and performing building performance diagnostics." This type of training will be of
benefit long-term as this type of performance measuring and scoring will be
required in all structures," Chuck adds.

Greeny Awards
The Greeny Award was implemented by the Green Initiatives Team to recognize and promote the sustainable green initiatives at Mott Community
College. If you know someone who is going the extra mile to recycle, or implementing cost saving programs that help reduce waste or provide educational outcomes related to green initiatives we'd like to recognize these efforts on our website and for the individual. By doing so we hope to inspire others to take action.

Flint River Wild Ones hosting
Sun Bee Symposium
The Flint River Wild Ones in collaboration with the Ruth Mott Foundation/Applewood and Mott Community College are hosting "Queen of
the Sun Bee Symposium" on Monday, April 30, from 5 to 9 pm in the Regional Technology Center. The event will begin with light refreshments at
5 pm and viewing at 5:30 pm of the film "Queen of the Sun: What are the
Bees Telling Us?" directed byTaggart Siegel. Taking us on a journey
through the catastrophic disappearance of bees and the mysterious world of
the beehive, this alarming and ultimately uplifting film weaves together a
dramatic story of the heart-felt struggles of beekeepers, scientists and
philosophers around the world. This spellbinding film explores the longterm causes that have led to one of our most urgent global food crises, illuminating the deep link between humans and bees. The story unveils 10,000
years of beekeeping, highlighting how that historic and sacred relationship
has been lost. An RSVP is requested for the movie portion of the evening.
The event will also feature a short presentation by bee educator David Anthony, Owner of Anthony Bee Farms of Swartz Creek, following the film.
This event is free and open to the public. In addition, the Flint River Wild
Ones will be hosting their Michigan Native Plant sale. Anyone interested
in the ancient art of bee keeping will have an opportunity to visit vendor
booths where bee keeping supplies and products will be available for sale.
