Interpreter Training Program Coordinator Jennifer
Doerr brings news about the
ITP: MCC has been asked to
participate in the new Deaf and
Hard of Hearing (DHH) Consortium through the Michigan
Department of Education that
allows Michigan teachers to receive an endorsement in DHH
through courses offered at universities within and outside of
Michigan. This online program requires students to take six credits of
American Sign Language (ASL) or pass the
American Sign Language Proficiency Interview Assessment at a Level
2. "Students have expressed interest in taking ASL classes in person and
we were contacted by the MDE to request that Mott be a site where students can take ASL classes to fulfill their requirement," Jennifer adds.
"So, of course, we are participating!"
Counselor Anne Gupton of the Counseling & Student Development Division, has been elected as President-Elect to the Genesee Area

Cindy Sanders, Director of the Institute for Medical Simulation
(IMS), located at the Southern Lakes Branch Center in Fenton, shares
news about a recent collaboration with the Law Enforcement Regional
Training Academy (LERTA), including the participation of Lt. Jim Malcolm and Officer Bill Brown in a MCOLES directors' meeting in Lansing on Sept. 11. The IMS presented information on simulation training
for police and first responders to enhance their understanding of simulation and the benefits it provides to bridge the gaps in learning, communication and teamwork. The demonstration included a scenario requiring
both first aid and CPR. "The response to the demonstration was very
positive," Cindy says. "Many directors asked questions regarding programs available for onsite trainings."

MCC sponsors major
community event in
recognition of National
Literacy Month
Mott Community College, as part of the Flint & Genesee Literacy
and Basic Skills Network, is playing an active role to fight illiteracy.
In recognition of National Literacy Month in September, the college
sponsored a major conference, partnering with a number of local agencies and organizations in an effort to help improve literacy rates, as
well as help people gain additional education and life skills. In recognition of National Literacy Month, the Flint & Genesee Literacy and
Basic Skills Network presented the first "Flint & Genesee Literacy
and Basic Skills Summit." The event was held on Friday, Sept. 27 at
the Riverfront Banquet Center in downtown Flint.
The Flint & Genesee Literacy and Basic Skills Summit focused on
how local institutions and organizations can collectively build the support system necessary to meet the literacy needs of the
community, and the correlation between illiteracy, unemployment,
under-employment and crime.
"A staggering number of individuals in our community have not
acquired the skills necessary to meet 21st century education, employment, and life requirements," said Robert Matthews, Executive Dean
of the Workforce Development/Workforce Education Center at Mott
Community College. "These individuals in turn, are also unable to attain family-sustaining employment and contribute to the economy.
This is why we came together for the Flint & Genesee Literacy and
Basic Skills Summit."
Highlights of the summit included a keynote address by the Honorable Tracy Collier-Nix, 68th District Court Judge, and a panel discussion featuring state leaders from the Michigan Workforce
Development Agency, Michigan Department of Human Services,
Michigan Economic Development Corporation and the Office of
Urban & Metropolitan Initiatives.
Co-sponsors of the Flint & Genesee Literacy and Basic Skills
Summit included the Genesee District Library and Genesee/Shiawassee Michigan Works!

to train workers and veterans
U.S. Senators Debbie Stabenow and Carl Levin announced
support for new high-tech job training opportunities for veterans
and workers whose jobs were outsourced. In the announcement issued on Thursday, Sept. 19, MCC and Baker College will be able to
design job training programs to prepare Michigan workers with the
right skills for advanced manufacturing jobs."For Michigan to create jobs and compete in the global economy, it's critical our workers have the right skills and training opportunities to match the
needs of emerging high-growth industries," Sen. Stabenow stated in
a news release. "This grant will help Mott Community College and
Baker College continue to lead the way in developing and expanding innovative training programs to help veterans and workers get
high-skill jobs now." "Michigan workers can out-compete any
workforce around the world if they have the opportunity to get the
training and education they need," Sen. Levin said. "These grants
are important to giving Michigan workers the support they need to
compete in a global marketplace."
Mott Community College will receive a $2.7 million grant as a
member in a consortium of eight Michigan community colleges on
behalf of the Michigan Coalition for Advanced Manufacturing.
